Choosing the cake baker was one of the most fun, but frustrating parts of planning. It was fun to go to all, or should I say most, of the tastings (we had one bad experience where we drove for an hour and a half for an appointment we had booked in advance only to be able to try one slice of a flavor neither of us would have wanted to try). So, the tastings were fun, and I loved looking at the gorgeous designs in each shop, but the downside was pricing.
As you can see, the cakes above are intricately designed and gorgeous. For those cakes, I’d completely understand a hefty price tag. The bakers put a lot of work into them and I think they are pieces of art. I’d have a hard time cutting into something so pretty. We decided early on there were certain areas of our budget we are not willing to splurge on, and the cake was one of them. We don’t want to sacrifice taste, but we decided we’d go with a simple and elegant design to save our budget.
We looked into doing a small cake or a large fake cake with just the top layer being real with sheet cakes from Costco, but logistics weren’t on our side, as there is no Costco in RI. I love Costco cakes, especially the one with the cream cheese filling!
So, we started looking into RI bakers. Costs started at $2.75 per slice and up, most being closer to $5.00 and up. The only two under the $5.00 mark just didn’t have the flavors we were hoping for. I was spoiled at Sister Starfish’s tasting after trying some really unique and fun flavors. After not finding the flavors I wanted in RI, I decided to give Sister Starfish’s baker a call. I assumed it was a long shot, as her baker, Konditor Meister, is in MA and I thought the prices would be high and the delivery even higher.
I booked an appointment and went with my bridesmaids. They ended up being right in our price range, actually so much so that including delivery, they fit our exact budget number down to the dollar. We ended up getting the flavors we wanted at a price that works for us!
I originally went with the Starfish girls thinking it was too much of a long shot. So, I needed to book a second appointment with Starfish Mom and Mr. Starfish to narrow down the actual flavors.

It was a fun tasting; we even met Konditor Meister’s co-owner, Gunther.

We tried about 10-12 flavors. We ended up loving about 8 of them. We aren’t huge fruit people so cakes with cherry and raspberry didn’t make the cut.

We are doing four tiers, so we have the option to do up to four flavors. When we left we thought we had it narrowed down, but I’m starting to second guess our flavor combinations. As a reformed picky eater, I’m wondering if we have something for everyone.
So hive, I turn to you.
