About Mrs. Octopus

I Have a Confession to Make

April 8th, 2010 @ 3:10 pm by Mrs. Octopus

I am a lifelong nail biter. I’m really serious about the “lifelong”, too—I can’t remember, even waaaayyyy back into my childhood, a time when I didn’t bite my nails. I’m almost embarrassed to describe the severity of it, too. I mean, when I’ve been really bad about it, my nails are STUBS. There’s almost nothing there. It’s NOT just a mild case of biting at the occasional hangnail.

Trust me, it ain’t this cute. (Source)

I’ve never seriously tried to stop before. When I was little, my mom would put that bitter stuff on my fingers, but I’d just pick at them instead. I know my ravaged nails are highly unattractive, but that was never enough to compel me to stop.

However, this past January, I thought our engagement was imminent (which was not actually true; we didn’t get engaged until May!). Knowing that once Mr. Octopus proposed, I would be frequently and prominently displaying my fingers, I finally felt driven enough to force myself to break the habit.

I didn’t actually use any techniques or tricks, just the force of sheer willpower. It was really hard!! Once, after a few months, Mr. O asked me if I ever still felt like biting my nails—and my response was that I had to force myself not to bite them, several times a day, every single day, since I gave it up in January.

Take a look at these outtakes from my engagement ring photo shoot:

Those nails are the result of FOUR MONTHS of deeply concentrated effort. I actually got a lot of comments on them, too. I was half pleased, and half mortified that my raggedy-ass nails had been so notorious.

Unfortunately, that’s not the happy ending. The two most common triggers for my nail biting were stress and periods where my hands were idle for a long time—particularly, reading. Well, this past August, I started a rigorous master’s degree program. Since then, I have been doing a whole lot of three things: stressing, reading, and biting my nails. Sad face.

I’ve got a new motivation now, though. I’m going to be a bridesmaid in April (for Erica, she of Running of the Brides fame!). Erica has always been particularly grossed out by my nail biting habit, and I really want to make sure my nails are not a hot mess and I get to partake in getting a manicure like all the other non-compulsive-habit-having bridesmaids.

What can I do? Is there anything other than sheer mental effort that can stop a serious nail biter in her tracks?

My fiance is not only a nail biter, but a cuticle biter.. I have been trying to put a cuticle softener on his nails at night (when I remember…) cause he never will, to try to get his HANDS to look decent.

My mom went on and on about how I NEED to have my nails painted for the day, cause they are going to want to take pics of our rings on our hands.. and I was like.. my fingers are not the problem here! Alas, we are still spending 20 bucks on a mani! Ha.

My fiance uses no-bite nail polish.. it will stop him from biting at the nail, but he still picks at them! I wish I had better advice.. short of sitting there with gloves on, I’m not sure how you stop.. it is just a habit, a reflex.. hopefully SOMEONE has help for you.

i used to be the same way. then for prom in high school, i convinced my mom to let me get a manicure with tips - and if you’ve ever tried to bite those suckers, it’s impossible! but i’ll tell you something, they lasted several weeks, I got them for one more go around, and I was cured! nearly 8 years and I can still attest to it! If you’re willing to shell out a little bit of dough, it may save you years more of aggravation! good luck!

I, also a life-long biter, find that the only thing that helps me out is dipping my fingers in nail polish remover. The taste is SO DISGUSTING that it will get me through at least a half a day! ;)

Good Luck!

I agree…getting my nails done (even if it meant fake nails for a while) will definitely help! I keep mine painted just so I don’t bite them!

Try hypnosis! People I know have used it to lose weight and stop smoking, so I would think it could help with nail biting too!

Ooh tough - I’m impressed by your willpower though! Maybe something to keep your hands busy while you’re reading, such as a stressball?

i did it by sheer will power. I still occasionally will bite at a rough spot - like if an edge is catching, but not the way i used to. my only suggestion is to carry a nail file around with you - every time i got the urge to bite, i’d file instead - it smoothed them out enough that the little rough spot triggers would go away

There is a nail polish that is supposed to stop nail biting. I used to bite my nails to a nub, and Found that putting nail polish on them made me stop, at least a bit, because it tasted horrible!

I reccomend getting Acrylic false nails! That stuff is blooming hard to bite through, trust me, i tried!!!
As a lifelong biter myself ive found it really really hard.
When the acrylic nails came off (i picked them off instead of paying to have them removed), my finger ends were pretty much totally destroyed so much so it hurt more than i could stand to bite them, so i let them grow (although now the skin and cuticles around my nails are horrid!). and now they’ve grown, i dont like to bite them too much, still have the odd nibble though!
although, when one breaks, i’ll bite it down to the quick, it will regrow eventually, just takes ages!!!

I quit biting my nails by getting acrylic nails once. You CAN’T bite through those suckers, so it stopped my habit!

My way still wasn’t great for my nails, but it helped me. I started with clear nail polish (the Sally hanson kind that makes your nails grow) and I would pick the nail polish off, instead of biting. One I go in the habit of that, I started painting them with color instead, which helped me break the picking habit. Putting that extra effort into my nails, helped me remember not to mess them up.

I used to be a hardcore nail biter too and I tried EVERYTHING to stop. I finally started getting a manicure every couple of weeks. Not acrylics, just a manicure. I’m incredibly cheap and I felt so guilty about spending the money to get them done, that it stopped me from biting them. The splurge was worth it.

Keep your nails painted at all times! I have the same problem and, I believe, it’s as bad as yours–we’re talking bleeding fingers here, gross–and this is the only thing that works. I know, it’s hard to bring yourself to paint tiny-short nails as it calls attention to them, but it really helped me. Even if it’s just a nude shade. It’s not just that they look good (’cause when they’re as short as mine were, no amount of polish makes them look good), but when I’m reeeeeeeally dying to bite them, I pick at the polish instead. I know, that’s not great for them either, but at least it keeps some length!

Good for you! I’m a knuckle popper and my boyfriend is a nail biter, it kinda grosses me out because he touches a lot of objects and shakes a lot of hands at his job. I can always tell when he’s wearing the no-bit polish cause his kisses taste bad.

My FH was a nail biter and got this stuff called DON’T BITE IT (seriously). It’s a clear polish that tastes God awful- it definitely helped him break the habit!

i bit my nails severely ’till i was about 20. the thing that got me to stop was a small swiss army knife. really! The one with a tiny pair of scissors, nail file and knife. For about a year, i carried it everywhere with me, and when i found myself wanting or starting to bite my nails, i would use it to “touch them up” instead. i usually used the file, but sometimes the scissors were handy to trim hangnails and such.

it was great - gave me something to fidget with, which is half (or more) of my problem, as well as a way to fix any snags, which was the other part.

(well, i also stopped once in my teens, when i spent a whole month on a camping trip - apparently even my sub-conscious knew that was gross! - but it didn’t stick once i got clean again =)

paint them every night… I bite bite bite but when my nails are pretty I somehow remember not to. Like when you wear white pants or when I take my leather designer purse (bought for less than an 8th of retail) out I always am conscious that it can’t be set on the bar in the mini drink puddles.

If you have trouble with breakage, like I do, try Daby… you can get it from Amazon… works wonders!
