Mrs. Veggie's Picture
Mrs. Veggie, Raglan, New Zealand/Scranton, PA Age and Occupation: 27, Director of Small Non-Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 42, PhD Student & Farmer Engagement Date: June 13, 2009 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: Indian Head Camp, Honesdale Pennsylvania About Me: I am a tree-huggin' farmer turned enthusiastic wedding-planner. I live in a house truck and wear flip-flops more often than shoes. In my old life I was a high school Spanish teacher in love with a crazy guy who lived off-the grid on a farm in New Hampshire. But, we decided to mix things up a bit, quit our jobs and move to New Zealand. My southern hemisphere lifestyle involves growing veggies, teaching, running our small non-profit, and surfing. I love laughing, singing, playing, and the inspirational Mr. Veggie (of course!). For our wedding, I am committed to throwing a killer party that celebrates our values without breaking the bank. Look forward to an eco-thrifty summer-campy weekend-long extravaganza.

Patience is Not My Strong Suit

April 8th, 2010 @ 6:14 pm by Mrs. Veggie

Why the bleep isn’t my dress here yet? As previously mentioned, the lovely Adriana sent it out ages ago. And according to the USPS package tracker (which I may have checked, oh I don’t know, about 1,000 times this week) here is the status:
Patience is Not My Strong Suit : wedding scranton wedding dress Trackin
There are a few weird things about this:

#1- Why did it take 5 days for my dress to get from Miami to Auckland? I mean I’m assuming it went “por avion” because a boat definitely would need to depart from a west coast port, not Miami. Unless of course they went the scenic route. And in that case, kudos to that ship captain for hauling butt and circumnavigating the globe in 5 days. But honestly, 5 days to fly to New Zealand?

#2- What reason could there be for my dress to have to enter customs twice? A long history of wedding dress drug trafficking? Oh, I guess so. Fair enough. Check it twice.

#3- Even if you do need to be extra careful to ward off drunk trafficking bridezillas, how long could it possibly take for a dress to get through customs? They’ve had it for NINE days!

I’m freaking out here! Of course there’s absolutely no reason for me to freak out, I have tons of time to do alterations, and I could actually call customs to see what’s up. But all the same, the anticipation and waiting is driving me nuts.

Did you go nuts waiting for your wedding dress to arrive?

Weird - why is this posted as Mrs. Penguin when I click on the blog entry?

At least you can see where it is and what’s (generally!) going on with it! Good luck!

Yeah, I just noticed the Mrs. Penguin tag when I clicked through, too!

USPS has a horrible tracking system. I wouldn’t trust it as far as I could throw it.

I’m sure your dress will arrive safely.

BTW, I’m totally jealous of your life with the Kiwis. One of my BMs lived in Auckland for 3 years and I managed to visit her twice during that short tenure. I absolutely loved it.

I think they did take a boat and now your dress is being held hostage by some pirates. How do you feel about negotiating with terrorists?

:-( Hope it gets to you soooooooooon!

I can totally understand your situation. I ordered my mantilla veil in etsy, and without knowing the veil came all the way from Turkey.
It took almost a month to get to my door. The weirdest thing of all is that it took more than two weeks to ship from ny to boston
Patience!

The same thing happens here in South Africa. Postage from the US to the country is quick, but we have one administrative postal hub where all mail is then re-routed from (this is excluding customs) VERY frustrating!. This may also be the case for you- maybe its a Southern Hemisphere thing :) Sit tight Veggie!! Im sure you’ll have it in the next day or so.

Wow, you live half-an-hour from me! It’s nice to see a NZ-based Bee.

I’m convinced that Customs like to wield their red tape for fun. Have you tried calling to find out about the delay? You may be able to get the dress sooner if you go to pick it up.

I deal with customs/FDA/USDA on the US side for work and I know when something is shipped USPS it takes FOREVER, like triple if it goes USPS instead of something like FedEx or UPS. It will come!!!! And the status of it going into Customs twice really doesn’t mean anything, their web site tracking is very inconsistent

Argh, it really tests your patience, doesn’t it? I purposely kept myself from tracking the delivery of my dress because I knew it would drive me crazy!

It (a sample) is still living at my friend’s house, as it has been for months. I can’t wait to get it chopped in a couple weeks. So, at that point, I am SURE I won’t be able to wait patiently until the alterations are done!

This may sound strange but sometimes you have to pay a tax on expensive items like wedding dresses if you have them shipped to you from overseas. You might want to call the customs office and make sure they aren’t holding your dress for that reason.

Yeah I ordered some Peacock feather from overseas, They cam from Japan. It two quite a few weeks to get anyupdates on tracking until the package came into the US at all. I was able to track it on the Japan tracking site. But anything overseas takes a while so I’m sure its fine and you’ll get it in a few weeks.

Firstly, USPS has a horrible tracking system. And secondly, hopefully, you’re dress will be in your longing arms in the next week!!

[...] Friday I got a letter in the mail from the lovely people at customs. Like some of you suggested in my last post, they were holding my dress for an import duty. I kind of had a feeling that this was what was [...]
