Mrs. Jellyfish's Picture
Mrs. Jellyfish, Pleasanton, CA Age and Occupation: 27, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Air Force Pilot Engagement Date: February 21, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Casa Real at Ruby Hill Winery About Me: In a nutshell, I’m the most optimistic worrywart you’ll ever meet. My family emigrated from Romania to San Jose, CA when I was 8, and I've been a Nor Cal girl ever since! My fiancé is also a Bay Area native, so it’s funny that we met at UCLA, as college freshmen living on the same floor (go Bruins!). Between his career as an Air Force pilot and my path to becoming a lawyer, our relationship has been anything but typical. We currently live together in Berkeley with our puppy Stinson. In addition to spending time with the loves of my life, I enjoy crafting, attempting complicated recipes, environmental law and non-law school reading (Us Weekly, anyone?). Follow along as I plan an elegant 200-person winery wedding, graduate law school, take the Bar exam, get married and get used to the always unpredictable but never boring life of a military spouse!
About Mrs. Jellyfish

Wedding tradition is that the bride wear “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a sixpence in her shoe.” I’m not one to mess with tradition, so I’ve started thinking about my “somethings”. Here’s what I’ve got so far:

Something Old: handmade Belgian lace veil circa 1920s

Something Old, Something New… : wedding accessories pleasanton shoes 1 1

Not this very one, but looks a lot like it (source)

My “something old” has a very special story behind it. It was given to my grandmother for me to wear at my wedding. I remember hearing about this veil when I was a little girl, and I am so ecstatic that my mama found it last time she was in Romania. Here is the story behind the veil, courtesy of Mama Jelly:

When your grandmother was a medical student, she was tutoring kids in order to pay her rent. The lady whose children she tutored in the late 1940, she was a young woman at that time (probably in her mid 30s-40).

In the mid 1980s, she was already in her 80s and Grandma close to 60, she called Grandma, with whom she kept in touch and she gave her this veil (which was hers) to her for you. It seems that she did not like the wife her son chose, so she did not give it to her!

Isn’t that amazing? I get choked up just thinking about it. And it happens to match my (second) dress perfectly. It’s fate, I tell you.

Something new: this could be my dress, or the earrings I’ll likely be wearing.

Something borrowed: I’m not sure what I will borrow yet. Maybe I can borrow a piece of jewelry from my mama. Or a sixpence? Anyone have one of those?

Something blue: I think I’ll probably wear the same blue shoes I plan on wearing to the city hall ceremony. They’re just so cute and the perfect height. Or, I could always get blue rhinestone “I do” on the bottom of my shoes.

Those are my “somethings” so far. What did/will you have for your something old, new, borrowed and blue?

Is there a Factory Card Outlet where you live? I saw in the wedding section, they sell a 6 pence with a poem. You could have someone buy it and let you borrow it! :-P

I went to England last year and got a 5 pence and a penny, so together they make 6 pence. But apparently the 6 pence coin is hard to find.

I love your veil! That’s such an incredible “Something Old”!!!

My stuff is as follows.
Old: a piece of lace from my mom’s wedding gown tied around my wrist (like a bracelet)
New: my dress
Borrowed: a diamond necklace from my mom, which was the first jewelry ever given to her by my dad
Blue: a blue bow on my garter

;) Don’t forget the “silver sixpence in her shoe.”

I too will be wearing blue shoes under my wedding dress. And with more than a year to go… I will be sure not to miss out on the often-left out last “something.”

My somethings:

Old: my grandma’s beautiful moonstone necklace and bracelet set.
New: dress
Borrowed: possibly my sister’s veil, but haven’t nailed this one down yet!
Blue: I’ve got the word “blue” tattooed on my upper back that will show when I’m wearing my dress. It’s a reference to the soccer team I support. :-)

I think the most awesome part about this is that your grandmother was a medical student in the ’40s!

Your story gave me goosebumps!! How awesome!! your veil is gorgeous!!

I just completed my “somethings” earlier this week! I was stressing over the borrowed, but it worked out better than I could have thought!

Old: A handkerchief that belonged to my Great Great G’mother
New: My dress
Borrowed: A beautiful broach that belonged to my Great G’mother…all I had to do was ask my Grandmother and she had just the thing!
Blue: Lacy undies with Bride written in rhinestones!

Makes me excited to carry a piece of these ladies with me down the isle! :)

Old: I might try to borrow a piece of my grandma’s jewellery, she passed away 4 years ago but my parents have some of it.

New: Dress, veil, shoes, jewellery. . .take your pick!

Borrowed: Still working on this one too.

Blue: My shoes!

Sixpence: I actually bought 10 sixpence off of Etsy (you can find some on there and also some on Ebay). This way I can give some to friends and family members (and future children/family) when they get married! I even picked 3 to be the year my parents met for my sisters and myself.
