On Michaels and Men

April 9th, 2010 @ 11:36 am by Mrs. Lace

I love Michaels. I really do. But lately, I’ve gotten a little sick of it just because I’ve been going so often… mmm, like one to two times a week? Except for last Saturday when I went to six different Michaels’. Don’t ask.

Anyways, onto the topic at hand. The first time I took Mr. Lace to Michaels to look for supplies we needed for the wedding, he was in awe at the items they sold there. After that trip, he said, “so that’s why you spend so much time there.” Once I sent him to Michaels to pick up some Zips.

I could envision exactly which aisle it was in, but had to describe it to him. After guiding him to the adhesive aisle (in between the stamps and craft punches and the paints! No! You went to far. It you see the vases, you’ve gone too far!) and describing the box, he successfully purchased the Zips I so desperately needed.
I actually felt really bad that he went for me, but I only got to see the conversation from my point of view… until today!

Today, I stopped by Michaels to pick up yet another craft item I needed for the wedding. As I was walking down the aisle (haha… not yet ladies!), I saw a man on his cell phone walking up and down the aisles and you could hear the exasperation in his voice. A few minutes later, we wound up in the same aisle. I eavesdropped as I was looking at beads. He was looking at bags of beads with letters on them - you know, the type kids use to make bracelets with their names on them. This is the one-sided conversation that ensued:

Yes, I’m looking at them. There’s a bunch.

They’re like boxes.

Yes, like cubes. Isn’t that the same thing?

Okay. Yes, they have letters on them.

Uhh… (looking carefully at the bag) I don’t see numbers, but there are 500 beads in this bag. It’s kind of hard to tell.

No, I think they’re all capitals.

No, they don’t have lowercase letters.

Yes, all capitals (sounding exasperated).

Okay, so should I just buy these (sounding like he wanted to leave)?

They’re colored (sounding a bit upset).

Like pink, blue, green, yellow, orange. All the colors!

Okay, so I’m just going to buy these.

Like, 1/4″ or something?

Yes, I have a coupon.

It’s 50% off.

Okay.

Okay.

Bye.

I had to quickly leave after that because I was beginning to crack up. Poor guy. I wonder if Mr. Lace felt the same way when I sent him to Michaels looking for a needle in a haystack!

Have you sent your guy to do something that was out of his comfort zone?

I JUST got off the phone with mr. froyo, and he was JoAnns. :) I told him just to ask someone there, but he said no, I’ll search and then call you back. Ha!

hehe! poor guy! luckily mr. sew is quite familiar with craft stores now, and they don’t bother him save for me always wanting to browse the sale bins to buy (in his mind) useless stuff…

That is too funny!! I opt to do the Michael’s thing myself…my moto is “if you want something done right, do it yourself!”

Great story!

Haha! I love it! My FI used to freak out if we were even on the same side of town as Michaels. Now he knows the wedding and clearance aisles very well.

I sent my FI to get unfinished photo frames at Michaels and sent him with a million coupons and instructions. I’m pretty sure the Michaels people are used to dealing with confused men sent with detailed instructions from their women…

I was asked my FI to pick up some sticks for the hot glue gun on his way home and he brought me an Elmer’s glue stick. Nice try. Now I just do it myself. :)

My FI is the first person to walk up to someone that works there and asks! He’s pretty good about that, but I’d be afraid to send him to Joanns alone!

Short of having a picture of what I need, it would be too hard to describe the little stuff I’m looking for…. “yeah, they are these little round metal eyelets… they are 1/8″ around. They come in a box.. they are silver, they are void in the middle….” He knows what they look like now that we have them, but if he had gone alone.. oh my!

Kudos to Mr. Lace for the phone call-free trip to the craft store!!!

Hahahaha! That is hilarious! I would have totally cracked up if I were there. The moment for the Mister and me was when I took him to the Wedding Salon bridal show - it was me, him and hundreds of brides. It was a month into our engagement, we were young and ignorant. Never again!

Spent yet another one of my lunch hours at Michael’s yesterday. I cleaned them out of tote bags and paper lanterns last week & keep waiting for them to restock so I can do it again!

I have absolutely done that to the poor guy… and I’m sure the conversation he had was very similar to the one you overheard haha!

I sent future hubby out to the local boys and girls club store to buy me the old school diaper pins. My step sis is uber fond of the animal shaped ones and I saw them there. Apparently he got weird looks from the guy at the register for picking up something like 6 packs of pins.

On another note… Do you think there should be a crafter’s anonymous? I put myself on a self induced craft store ban bc I was going at least every weekend to Pat Catan’s and usually multiple times during the weekend to Michael’s or Joann’s. =)

@Miss Sewing: Future hubby tries to steer me away from the sales bins too… He says I’m always buying things I don’t need just because they are over 50% off. ;)

@Miss Frozen Yogurt: Gosh. It’s just like asking for directions!

@Miss Sewing & @labrat: They don’t understand! There’s so much good stuff in there and one day, far from now, you’ll be crafting and suddenly think, “I have those bird stickers from the sale section at Michael’s last year!”

@futuremrse: Yes, Mr. Lace is much more familiar with Michael’s now and even ventures in there himself if we need something. :)
Uhh.. he’s even gone as far as using their ladders to see if they have the item he’s looking for that’s no longer on the shelves.

@Mojito: Ha! I’ve cleaned them out of mason jars . :)

@Miss Hamster: I suggested going to a bridal show and got shot down very quickly. :)

@labrat: When you start that club, I will be your first member. :\ I’ve stopped spending money on shopping and now spend it at craft stores.

Mr Trail Mix would probably laugh in my face if I asked him to go to Michael’s for me…He doesn’t “do” crafts :)

Yes, I have done the six different Michael’s in one day several times- invites, lanterns, plaster of paris- whew! It got to the point that we would be driving in a far off corner of the city for something else, and I would request him to pull over so I could see if this random Michael’s had what I desperately needed and couldn’t find at the eight near us! He now regrets not buying stock in Michael’s since half of our wedding budget must have gone to there.

My husband now makes fun of me every time we pass one- do you wanna go in? No, I’m taking a brief hiatus from that place. Never thought I would get tired of being there!

My FI’s eyes start to glaze over the minute we walk into Michaels, He attempts to distract himself by picking up anything and everything that can be viewed as a toy. I spent too long looking at votive holder options only to feel something pokeing me in the derriere. It was FI, playing swordfight with some silk flowers. I swear it feels like I am dating a 7 year old . . .

@ktisthatbees: Haha! Last week when I went, the lady in front of me in line finished checking out and she turned around and said, “where’s my husband?” She looked around and couldn’t find him. The clerk jokingly said, “do you want me to page him?” The lady laughed and said, “actually, yes!” I chimed in and said, “Can you say, ‘We have a lost husband. Please report to the front. Your wife is waiting for you!”
