About Mrs. Starfish

Planning a nautical inspired wedding in New England is pretty easy. The best piece of advice I have for nautical brides is to check out local photographers’ blogs. I follow a lot of photographers, but when it’s time to find nautical inspiration, you can’t beat the photos on RI photographer blogs. It isn’t called the Ocean State for nothing.

Over the past year and a half, I’ve been tabbing some of my favorite starfish-themed weddings. Snap! Photography has had some of my favorites. I’m in love with the wedding below. We aren’t having kids at the wedding other than my niece/Goddaughter who is the flower girl, who I’ve nicknamed Little Starfish. Little Starfish will almost be two by the time the wedding rolls around and I want to get her some fun nautical toys to thank her for being our flower girl. I was in love with these cute starfish-themed pails on the Snap! blog.

This wedding had so many amazing details.

When it comes to starfish inspiration, the escort cards just seem to be the first detail to pop in my head. I love seeing different ways to incorporate starfish in the cards.

The Kristin Spencer photography blog had a great idea. I’ve seen starfish escort cards, but I love how this bride changed it up a bit by having a few other items from the sea.

Even when guests bring the escort cards to the table, they are still pretty enough to be decoration.

Just in case guests don’t use the escort cards as extra decor, I love how this couple on the Brian Phillip’s photography website placed the starfish right at each place setting.

And I really love that they included Starfish in the boutonniere. Too bad Mr. Starfish isn’t into it.

And they even had starfish as a part of their invites. I love that they introduced the theme right from the beginning. I’ve seen a few invites incorporating starfish, but after seeing the cost to send and create them, I decided to skip this beautiful detail.

Where do you go for inspiration for your wedding? Do you notice specific photographers whose couples’ weddings share a similar vibe to yours?

Aww, the starfish escort cards are too cute!! I have been following Juliet Elizabeth recently. Based out of Charleston, she has a vintage and photojournalistic style that seems to attract many brides who love all things classic and southern. Think lace, magnolias, candlelight, and other feminine details. I am gaining so much inspiration from these brides!

I love these ideas too! I am also doing a beach/nautical theme but I am afraid of using too many shells because then it can become a bit kitschy looking. I got a bunch of the starfish to put one on each table or use as pew decorations, but for the escort cards I’m using sand dollars, they were 1/3 of the cost of the finger starfish. With the costs of favors and OOT buckets for every guest, I don’t want to be spending too much on escort cards.

I love the detail in the escort card set up, with some shells to add some variance!

Oh, please please please do not use real dried starfish in your decor! I’m a Marine Biologist, and I know for a fact that the majority of these are taken from the ocean in Asia and the Carribean illegally, or from areas where there is already a great deal of overfishing/ecological devestation. There are plaster molds out there, and fake starfish that are equally as beautiful, but much, MUCH more eco friendly (I love the theme, it just makes me really sad when people use lots of shells and dried sea life for decorations for one day!)

I’m with Crayfish, use fake starfish all the way. Otherwise your wedding might start to look like starfish genocide…

I think it looks super when you tie your theme into all sorts of aspects like in the pictures above. We’ve recently added a “bicycle built for two” theme to our June wedding and it’s amazing how many details you can find for such a specific theme. We recently ordered a cake topper, napkins and direction signs. I love going to blogs and wedding websites for inspiration and our photographer is AWESOME so that’s always a good idea too!

I go to greenweddingshoes.com for inspiration all the time! It helps that the blogger has the same taste as I do, but she’s always posting inspirational photos!

I had a starfish themed wedding last August. See attached photos. I got some many ideas from Weddingbee. My cake topper came from Etsy (made in Maine) and my mom and dad sent me star fish from Florida. My husband and I collected the sea shells from Ocean City MD while we were visiting there. The extra large starfish couple [last photo] were ‘dressed’ with champange bottle wedding gear I found on clearance at Michaels’s. My centerpieces were sand coated candles sitting in sand with the shells on a clear plate from IKEA and setting on a aqua colored shami.

I used starfish as a subtle detail at my wedding and for our invitations we had mini starfish glued to the pocket in which the invite was in with raffia tied around it. SO perfect and the mini starfish were CHEAP!

We also had a thing on our reception door that was like a chandelier of starfish!

There are so many fun starfish ideas out there :)

I agree with crayfish too; please don’t use real starfish for decoration. “take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints”

Have to admit..I got a little sad looking at some of these pictures :( Using a starfish motif is lovely. Heck! I LOVE nautically inspired weddings…..but PLEASE use the artificial ones if you choose to do so.

I never even thought of that, where can you buy fake starfish? I’ve tried googling it, but nothing really came up
