Mrs. Pretzel's Picture
Mrs. Pretzel, Seattle Age and Occupation: 32 Learning, Training, and Development Specialist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28 Manufacturing Engineer Engagement Date: September 2, 2009 Wedding Date: July 2010 Venue: Catholic Church & The Engine Room at Georgetown Studios About Me: I’m just a thirty-something girl who never dreamed of weddings, poofy dresses, or ritzy receptions. I am a rabid knitter, except recently, wedding projects have replaced my yarn and needles. I’ve been fiercely independent since the age of 2 and 30 years later I think my family and friends had given up on me settling down and getting married. Ironically, I had to go all the way to Seattle to find a boy from Purdue. We fell in love over Seattle Beers and cooking together. I love NASCAR, he loves Legos. I can talk like a Muppet and he can fit a whole McDonald’s cheeseburger in his mouth. We are a two reception couple, currently planning a brewery inspired bash.
About Mrs. Pretzel

I swear I like writing thank you notes more than I like receiving gifts.

*blink, blink* “Did Pretzel just say what I think she said?”

Damn straight I did! No, your mother didn’t pay me to say that. And although I would certainly enjoy one, no I don’t have a cold beer in my hand right now. I’m dead serious—I love thank you notes. My Mom started us early; I can’t remember not writing thank yous for gifts or nice gestures. Usually it meant getting pretty paper or cards. Oh, how I love pretty paper. I always have a stock of cute thank you cards around the house, just in case.

Pretty paper is a perk, but really I think my love affair with thank yous stems more from the act of writing. Sitting down to hand-write why I appreciated a gift or thoughtful gesture makes me reflect on the person doing the giving and my appreciation of the gift. I know that I don’t always take time for reflection and the practice of writing thank yous helps me carve out time for this. There are times when I feel like this practice is dwindling in use.

With the exception of weddings, it feels like most people don’t send thank you notes. Sad but true. I love that my MOH/SIL “Tig” has passed this tradition on to my niece and nephew. I get handwritten (dictated when they were too little to write) thank you notes from “the Girl” and “The Boy” and it makes me happy inside. Tig, like myself, grew up writing Thank Yous. It’s a good thing too… Big Bro Pretzel hated writing thank yous as a kid and procrastinated like heck on them.

I’ll confess, when we started registering for gifts I got excited at the prospect of designing some cute cards for Mr Pretzel and me to express our gratitude. Come on, with thank you notes as cute as these, how can you not look forward to saying “thanks?”

Mr P and I Gocco-d these a couple weeks ago. I admit we got a little “bee” help in the art dept. ;)

It was very quick to Gocco and we only used one screen for the project. Cleaning it and changing colors for the” Thank You” wasn’t as hard as I was lead to believe it would be. I used Goccogrrl screen cleaner from Northwoods Studios, lots of newspaper and paper towels. We were able to put the screen (with ink on it) in a Ziploc bag and in the refrigerator. This prevented the ink from drying up and made the cleaning process easier. I only suggest cleaning a Gocco screen for the purposes of changing colors. If you wrap it in Saran wrap and Ziploc it, you can store them in the freezer for quite some time.

I’m getting ready to jump on a plane to Indiana for bridal showers with Mr Pretzel’s family. I can’t wait to see my bridesmaids and spend time getting to know Mr Pretzel’s aunts and cousins better. And yes, I’m also excited about using more of our thank you cards.

How are you and your fiance saying “thanks”? Any other “thank you” lovers out there?

I love writing thank you cards!! I got to write one yesterday — I always write everything (I love coming up with things to write), and then sign it “Love, Jennifer & ” and have to wait until FI finally gets off his butt and signs his name. Haha! I love your thank you cards!!

I am always greatful for gifts. My problem with Thank you cards, is I always don’t know what to say, so I end up saying the same thing over and over in every card, which makes me feel like I don’t sound genuinley greatful. I mean, I know my friends and family can’t see eachother’s cards. Any suggestions on how to make them feel more genuine?

@MissMichele: I don’t know if this will help you but I always try to tell an antidote as to why this gift is particularly helpful/useful etc. For example when we got a blanket, I mentioned that I’d was especially happy because I am always cold and that Mr P would be happy because I’m always trying to crank the heat up and he runs hot.

Cute cards! I too love writing notes, thank you or otherwise, and I always have a decent stash around the house. One of my favorite books is On a personal note: a guide to writing notes with style, which I purchased at Hallmark. Great reference to have if you can’t quite think of the perfect thing to say.

Those thank you cards look awesome! If it’s not a close friend or family, we do thank you cards with a little something something inside. If it’s a close friend or family, we give em a ring.

I love writing thank you cards also! Although sometimes it is hard to start the process. In addition to thanking them for the gift, I always try to include a personalized wish - like, “I hope things are going well with your new job.” Or whatever you know about them that would be relevant!

The TY cards are too cute! I’m really jealous that you love writing them though; I’m so the opposite! I didn’t grow up writing TY cards, it was always greet and thank them in person. I’d rather clean my toilets than write TY cards… as evidenced by the stack of 20 STILL waiting to be written 5 months after my baby shower… :P

I’m a big “thank you” fan too! And of hand written letters and hand made cards. :)

Yours are super cute! And sparked an idea for me too! ;)

I love thank you cards…writing them and receiving them, but sadly people don’t write them anymore…even for wedding gifts, surprisingly. I love your thank you cards!
