Up and Away: Favors for a Cause

April 9th, 2010 @ 1:21 pm by Mrs. Cloud

We had one final DIY task to complete before the real wedding festivities could begin! Well, they were going to start regardless, but I was determined to get everything checked off of my list. Favors! I have been to many weddings, and gotten a variety of favors. But I have to be honest, while most wedding favors are cute and look great on display at the wedding, I normally forget them not long after the wedding and they get deserted in our junk drawer (I’m so serious too, I found like six when we moved in our kitchen drawer). I can understand it though; it’s easy to get sucked into all the cute favor ideas out there, but I just couldn’t bring myself to skip them completely.

Mama Cloud to the rescue! A few years ago she went to a wedding where they didn’t get a favor at all, but instead there was a small sign on each table informing guests that a donation had been made in their honor to the couple’s favorite charity. I loved the idea, but I wanted more than a small frame that might be overlooked.

After a bit of brainstorming with Mr. Cloud we decided to give out treats of some sort. It was kind of a no-brainer since the only favors he even remembered ever getting were the edible ones. I didn’t want to commit to baking something (I’d already been vetoed on the baking front during the OOT planning anyway), so we started to think candy! And nothing is better than a kiss!

I had seen a picture at some point that had always stuck with me—small boxes at each place setting tied with a cute bow. Armed with white 2”x2”x2” favor boxes, 1” black ribbon, what seemed like a million pounds of Hershey Kisses, and Mama Cloud’s serious bow tying skills, we were in business.

Each box also had a small card stating that a donation had been made to one of the two charities we selected; American Heart Association or American Cancer Society.

Mama Cloud tied, and tied, and tied some more… Over 200 bows for the favors alone!

And Bella supervised, as always! Sorry, you are going to have to wait just a few more posts to see how they looked on the tables. :)

What did you do for favors? Or did you nix the idea completely?

We are doing cookies. My FI makes the most amazing chocolate cookie with white chocolate chips.. We are going to put two cookies and an oreo in every bag. We are doing a black and white reception, so it seemed appropriate, and they will be hand made by the bride and groom! Trying to decide if we want to attach a recipe, or say that they are homemade or a little thank you… that’s the only part I haven’t figured out.

Your’s are totally cute I love the round cards! How did you cut those out??? So cute, and Bella looks like she was totally quality control manager!

I love this idea! We played with it, but for our family, we were afraid that charitable giving on their behalf could be construed as presumptuous since many of our family and friends have charities that they already contribute to. So we compromised by doing other philanthropic things with our wedding: my dress was purchased from a non-profit salon where the gowns are donated samples and the proceeds from the sale benefit the Brooklyn Charter School. Also, we’re working with our venue to donate the flower arrangements to nursing homes and hospitals in the area the day after. Some states will accept food donations to pantries and shelters from the caterer as well, it just depends on the state (unfortunately ours does not accept, but yours may).

The boxes look great! Do the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society have a special meaning for you two?

What excellent ideas! Thanks for sharing! My FI and I have been feeling we want to donate to a charity but also want to send everyone home with something sweet :) Where did you get the boxes?

That’s so thoughtful! We can’t decide on a favor so we’re leaning towards nixing the idea. :-(

Wow that is an AMAZING idea! I’ve been kinda pushing favors to the back of my mind, but I have to say that I might just have to follow in your footsteps! :D Good job Mama Cloud on tying all of those ribbons! Moms are just so reliably wonderful :)

@Ella1978: such a good idea (and of course if you have extras, please send them my way!)
@MJogan: Such great ideas to give back! We chose the heart association because my dad’s family has a been touched with many heart problems, and the cancer society for my husband’s granmother (who passed from brain cancer) and my sorority sister (who we lost to lukemia)
@Miss Peach: the boxes were ordered from efavormart.com -but I warn you to order early, they were by far the cheapest I found but were backordered three times with no warning it took over 6 months to get them:(

We are donating to two charities close to our hearts — our local animal shelter and the American Cancer Society — in lieu of favors, but I am also baking cookies in the shape of breast cancer awareness ribbons and puppies and putting them in cellophane bags along with a note telling our guests of the donation. We’re three months out, so here’s hoping they turn out okay when we actually bake them!

Love this! I’ve been trying to find a way to mix a small, edible favor with a donation.
