About Mrs. Lobster

I Don’t Like Surprises…

April 10th, 2010 @ 6:15 pm by Mrs. Lobster

Proposal: couch in our apartment, one Saturday night

Mr. Lobster: “Will you marry me?”
Me: “Right now???”
Mr. Lobster: “No, you know. Later.”
Me: (awkward pause) “Sure…but only if you keep giving me good foot rubs.”

OK, that’s not really what happened. The conversation DID happen but he wasn’t proposing. Let’s be clear: I don’t like surprises. I like to know what is happening, when, where, and what to wear. Mr. Lobster knows this and so his “pre-proposal” was his way to make sure we were on the same page.

When I was finally ready to be engaged, I wanted to pick out my ring. Little did he know, as any engagement-dreamy girl would do, I had already done my research (research = online pictures, ring stalking).

My dream ring looked like this:

I Don't Like Surprises... : wedding brooklyn Img Thing img-thing

Tiffany Legacy

Edwardian, vintage, just SO pretty! So when we made our first “casual” trip to Tiffany’s, the Legacy was the first ring I tried. Shockingly, I was not in love. I didn’t get that *I’m engaged* feeling!

But then, I saw her, winking at me in the distance…

I Don't Like Surprises... : wedding brooklyn Novo1 novo1

Tiffany Novo

Why, hello there… where you been all my life?

Mr. Lobster and I sat down with Marvel––our sales associate at Tiffany Wall Street—to discuss. Marvel was great. He was absolutely no pressure and was super friendly. He gave us a full lesson on diamonds. He talked about the trade-offs in price with the 4Cs. He even ordered rings for us to try on. (Note: you can order 3 rings from any Tiffany store in the country to try on without an obligation to buy.)

The only hurdle? MAJOR sticker shock. Tiffany has an excellent reputation for the best products and a lifetime of customer service. Mr. Lobster was paying for the ring and I felt guilty asking him to spend any large sum on a piece of jewelry. But. I. Loved. It. And at that moment I’d fallen for everything Tiffany had to offer.

Did you have sticker shock with your dream ring? What did you do?

I am still very jealous of you and am reading your blogs while hating that you’re lobster…. :P (I am kind of kidding haha) but seriously, if I could have my dream ring it would have been in the six figures…. I like my small 900 dollar ring.

i had a bit of sticker shock and i didn’t even get to go into the store! we live really far away from any Tiffany’s stores. actually, the second ring up there was my dream ring as well! we found a moissanite ring that was almost identical and that’s what we got instead. way lower in cost and we were able to afford my dream ring! plus, no one can tell the difference!

My dream ring is Tiffany’s too! The Lucida. The man got it made in the diamond district from a really great guy that lots of his friends bought rings from. So I have my lucida look-a-like for less than it would have been, which makes me quiet happy!

Having a big hunk of rock on my finger wasn’t important to me, I wanted to make sure that my ring was a symbol of our commitment not our salary.

In the end my fiance picked out the perfect ring for me, three stone, diamond and under $900. Just like the wedding I think it’s less about being a status symbol and more about who you’re with.

My taste in anything is either really expensive or super cheap, nothing in the middle. My FI and I went ring shopping a couple times but I never really found the one. My sister recommended that I look at my mom’s wedding ring/engagement ring. (She has since received a new one after 40years) It was perfect!

My motto is … if it’s something that you’re only going to have for one day, go on the cheaper side, but with something that you’ll have the rest of your life, it’s not out of the question to go a little more. What’s the saying? The ring should be 6mo of his salary…if it’s more than that woman, send some $$ my way!! ;o)

After future hubby proposed with his great grandmother’s ring, we browsed Tiffany’s site. And when I pointed out a 30,000 ring, he nearly fell off the bed! =)

So did you get the Tiffany beauty?

“What’s the saying? The ring should be 6mo of his salary…”

I’ve always heard that it’s Two Months
(my guy gaped at the thought- reading over my shoulder of course)
I can’t imagine half of his yearly salary on a ring.

I am a little confused…is this your ring? Or is the teaser for another post? Both are beautiful.

We were told that many places can replicate a Tiffany design, and you can get more value for the money you pay…Tiffany rings are lovely, but the prices are very marked up just for the brand name. We ended up getting the ring from a place where the craftsman used to work at Tiffany’s — he did a lovely job!

yes. i also fell in love with a tiffany’s design.

we went to our city’s wholesale district, picked a loose stone we loved for the center stone at an awesome price(like 1/3 the cost of a similar stone at tiffany’s), and worked on custom-designing a ring together that was similar but not exact. our jeweler’s customer service is just as good if not better than tiffany’s as it’s a small, family operation, and we had a lot of fun going back and forth during the design process to create the ring together.

beautiful ring!

…My ring was $90 from a gift shop. No sticker shock there! I figure there’s a 99.9999999% chance that I’ll lose this symbol at some point during our marriage. Hopefully at that point we’ll be in a better financial situation for a replacement. :-/

Beautiful ring, though! Perfectly timeless…

how funny! i went from wanting a three-stone ring to wanting that tiffany legacy ring! well, not that one in particular but that halo style. and yes, i was definitely hit by sticker shock. i still can’t believe his intended budget for my ring but i have a problem being comfortable with anything that’s has 3 digits in the price. lol

FH won’t even tell me how much the ring is! Not even a rough estimate lol. I’d probably die of sticker shock!

And I feel the same way as you about surprises: no thank you! But FH’s proposal COMPLETELY caught me off-guard, totally wasn’t expecting it, and I don’t remember anything except staring at the ring in the box. Couldn’t speak, breathe, think rofl.

I am so jealous!! I got the GASP, punch in the stomach “sticker shock” when I found out how much Tiffany rings are. Luckily, my FI & I know an amazing jeweler who custom designed my ring to look similar to the NOVO with a twist to make it look unique. I too hate surprises, but I’m kinda glad my ring was a complete surprise. I was so proud of my FI for creating such a beautiful piece. (Of course, all credit goes to my jeweler because he knows my style so well xP)

We did the same thing as LisaBee. My fi had my dream ring custom made for 1/6 of the price and I absolutely love it. And I’m glad we ended up under the budget he set and not in credit card debt. I get compliments on it ALL the time. Our jeweler did a great job.

And I changed my mind completely like you did when we started shopping, I though I was in love with emerald cuts but ended up going for something completely different.

Miss Lobster - you and I have the same “ring story”!! ALWAYS loved Tiffany’s; never thought I would wear a Tiffany diamond. FH made me go to a car show with him once and in return we could do anything I wanted. Of course I chose a trip to Tiffany’s! Always wanted to try on those diamonds! He agreed to “play along” as I tried on rings and pretend we actually intended to buy one even though we both agreed the sticker prices were WAY beyond reason. I too thought the Legacy was the ring dreams were made of but when I put it on it just didn’t do it for me. Then the Novo graced my hand. I knew from that moment that was “the one”. Afterwards we joked about the Novo and how if he ever won the lottery it would be mine. Six months later he was down on one knee, little blue box in hand, containing my beloved Tiffany Novo ring! God I love that man!!

PS - you never did tell us…..is that your ring??

I looooooved the legacy ring. We don’t have a Tiffany’s here or anywhere nearby, but I did try on a really similar-looking ring just to see what it’d look like, and like you I really didn’t feel like it was ‘the one’. (Kind of like dress shopping sometimes, eh?) I ended up getting a legacy-type ring (with the halo design), but marquise set. It’s much more ‘me’! Can’t wait to see what you ended up with after the sticker-shock set in!
