About Mrs. Octopus

Photographer: Found!

April 10th, 2010 @ 3:00 pm by Mrs. Octopus

You know how, when you read lists of tips on how to stick to your wedding budget, they often suggest that you prioritize the few elements that are most important to you, allocate “splurge” money for those, and be willing to compromise on other aspects? Mr. Octopus and I did that, and the elements of our wedding that were “big ticket” items were these: Heinz Chapel, the Children’s Museum, and catering.

You know what that leaves out of the “splurge” category? Photography.

I know a lot of people’s feelings are basically that pictures are the only real, tangible thing to take with you after a wedding is over, and the memories they preserve put them into the “worth a big investment” category. I can totally get behind that sentiment. On the other hand, as I’m sure everyone is aware, photography can get just mind-blowingly expensive. Photography really is important to both my groom and I, and we really did want beautiful pictures, but sticking to a budget also means making some very tough choices. My initial favorite photographers, many of whom were most definitely in “big splurge” territory, were out.

So, I initially set a budget of $1500 for a photographer. I’ll spare you all the gory details, but after a month and a half of devoted research, the results were grim.

We could not find anyone in that price range whose work we felt good about. True, we had decided that we couldn’t spare a big portion of the budget on photography, but we also could not justify spending $1500 on people whose portfolios gave us nothing but lukewarm “that miiiiiiight be okay” types of feelings. It’s not really a smart compromise if you’re totally dissatisfied with the results, you know? We decided to shuffle the budget around a bit, and added some more money to the photography allocation.

And guess what? With a little bit more wiggle room in the budget and another few weeks of combing the Internet, the clouds parted, the sun shone through, and we found an absolutely fabulous photographer whose skills I am incredibly, incredibly excited to have booked for our wedding. I feel so lucky! We found an artist whose work is super delicious and is precisely within our budget, no compromising or downgrading of our hopes required.

Check it. The photographer we picked is great with colors…

How did you choose your photographer? How much of your budget did you choose to set aside for it?

We didn’t want to sacrifice great photos for the sake of our budget either, so one thing we did to make a great photographer more cost friendly was book them for a shorter period of time. We’ll skip the “getting ready” photos (I don’t care much for them anyway) and use the money we saved there for an engagement shoot. Ta-da, win win. :-)

Those are great! We got super lucky with photography in that my good friend is a wedding photographer (www.laraswansonphoto.com). I’m so thankful i didn’t have to make such an agonizing decision :)

Photography was in our in our super-duper important category too. However, our catering (food, labor and rentals) is taking up up about half our budget which doesn’t leave room for a lot of other big ticket items. We set an initial photography budget and ended up bumping it up about $300 to find everything we wanted in a photographer. We succeeded though with that minimal budget adjustment!

Nice choice.. and good for you for holding out until the right person came along. I also waited for all the right pieces to come along: personality, style, price, and portfolio.

Haha, photography is one of our big priorities and we thought allocating $1500 was even a stretch for us and our budget! :-p Maybe my area is more saturated with photographers which makes them have to lower some of their prices to compete. Glad you found a great photographer! Love those pics!

Your photographer’s work is awesome! You guys will have such good pics from the wedding. I’m one of those people who think photos are the one thing you keep from the wedding. Then again…my mom reminds me that she looks at her wedding photos maybe once a year if that many times at all!!

I always say that the right clients find you! :) I’m super excited to shoot your wedding!! You picked some of my favorite shots.

Amber, try crying and shooting that!! Oh my, those two pulled my heartstrings so many times that day! He cried as soon as he saw her all done up as a bride and cried the entire dance. So beautiful :)

Is it September yet?? ;)

She takes amazing photos! I had the same problem when doing our budget with wanting a good photographer but not being able to see spending 3,000 on it. So I found a friend who I knew did some photography and whom posts the most amazing everyday photos on her facebook page. As she’s not turned pro yet and a friend, she was able to do our wedding, engagement, a proof book and digital rights for around 1200. Plus I LOVE her photos compared to some of the “Eh” photographers.

@sunnydebs: We did the reverse! We skipped the engagement shoot in order to get more time on the wedding day.
@sapphirebride: We did almost the exact same thing. Catering took up SO MUCH MONEY that we just couldn’t really go crazy anywhere else.
@Corey Ann: I CAN’T WAIT!!!
@Darla: Yay! One of the reasons I picked Corey is because of all the glowing reviews online of how great she is to have around on the wedding day!

We set a 1500 budget as well. I think we’ll get by with $1700.
