The Foundation of It All

April 10th, 2010 @ 11:25 am by Mrs. Oyster

My mother always said (why does so much of my wedding-related writing include references to my mother?) that your foundation garments are more important than any clothes you put on top.

She would be astonishingly embarrassed to find out that for the past several months I’ve been wearing a bra that barely fits. It doesn’t lift, separate, or support, and it looks awful and worn out. I’ve been trying to order new bras for months, both for everyday wear and for the wedding, and I haven’t had any success.

But Thursday, when my most recent shipment arrived only to not fit properly (again!), I got mad and frustrated.

Mr. O, hearing my complaints, got online and found me a local specialty bra shop. I don’t know why I didn’t think of this; probably because I didn’t want to deal with being fitted and having to show my so & sos to some strange shop employee.

But desperation overruled my shyness, and I went to the shop, got fitted, and came out $110 poorer, but with TWO custom-fitted bras in hand. After a bit of a wait, I received excellent service. The ladies are very nice, if a bit awkward, and they have a custom seamstress on staff. My bras needed two darts in the sides, and she put them in for free while I waited. I must admit that I’d never even considered custom-fitting a bra. And I look *great* in my winter sweaters now!

My only complaint is that I wish I’d found the shop months ago… I could have saved so much money & frustration if I’d just been more willing to be a little embarrassed for a few minutes!

Have your wedding plans inspired you to overcome embarrassment or fear in some way? Have you ever been custom fitted for undergarments?

I hear you about bras…..my girls are quite big so finding a bra that the straps don’t fall off….that doesn’t ride up in the back and holds me in the front was a definite challenge. I live in Canada and for whatever reason big bras (that aren’t ugly!) are hard to find and are very expensive. On a recent trip to Vegas I went to Macy’s and I asked to try on the Oprah bra. It’s called Wacoal…..it’s the best purchase I’ve ever made and I can’t tell you how good it feels to wear a bra that fits!! Yay for finding an excellent support system!!

Good for you! I know it is scary, I have the opposite problem in that I so much look like a boy that when I try to get fitted most of the A cups still have quaint little empty gaps where boob should be. So much cute stuff out there that the very large and very small cannot wear!

Oh! I forgot… the shop, for Dallas ladies, is the Maddox Shop on Garland Rd. & Buckner.

Yup! Custom fit bras are THE best! There’s a great place here in LA (also with sweet, but a bit awkward ladies) that alters your bras on the spot. Fantastic! And very sweet of Mr. O to seek out your shop for you btw. :)

I love custom bras. I would rather save my money and buy two perfectly-fitted bras for top dollar than to have a dozen that can’t do the job.

Oh yes, I loooove the custom shops. But getting 2 for $110 is a steal!!! I was looking last week at some nice ones for special occassions etc. (anything other than my beige molded cup!)…and it was $201!! For one bra!! I was like “ooh, umm, yeah I’m going to have to think about it” haha.

it’s so funny you posted this! I don’t have custom bras (reallllly wish I did) - but I did get a GREAT deal on bras last night…my mother and I went shopping for her for a dress - and she needed a bra - and the bras at macys were buy 2 get 2 free…so she was already buying 1 - I figured I could get 1 too and then the 2 free! Thing is - I have lost/gained/lost so much weight in my life - and yet now I’m at a very healthy weight - I can wear a size 10/11 waist - but my stupid shoulders are so broad that my chest is a size 42 - and yet my cup size is B. honestly WHERE do you find 42B’s?! But I found a few that I loved at Macy’s and bought them. It seriously makes a WORLD of difference to be wearing bras that actually FIT! I have two (before last night’s purchase) that i’ve been wearing that i’ve “made” to fit (extenders) but I know I need to get rid of them…one day I would LOVE to get a custom-made bra (or two or three, lol).

I think it is very sweet that your FI went on-line to research alternatives for you. That really is love…….so many guys just would not want to bother with assisting with undergarments.

I just wanted to say that Mr. O. sounds really sweet and very supportive and the way you talk about him makes him sound like a great guy.

Yeah, I agree with these other comments, Mr. O sounds amazing! Maybe he should start a blog and we can all get our FHs to follow it. (Not that I don’t love my FH but sometimes….)

I have the exact opposite problem. My boobs are non-existent. Every time I try on a dress the sales women are like “well, we’ll have to put cups in… er, actually, hmm…not sure how we can modify this.” I’m like “HELLO, I’m standing right here!” And frankly, the jig is up. Everyone knows I’m totally flat, let’s just move on.

Yes - I have actually overwon a fear because of my pending wedding. I got my ears pierced! My parents wouldn’t allow me to get them pierced, and when I got old enough to decide for myself, I was devastatingly afraid of getting the operation done. So for Xmas, my boyfriend gave me earrings and a piercing. And while I was very, very nervous about it, and felt slightly sick from the idea of having something sharp going through a piece of my body, I managed! I didn’t faint or anything! Well, I was slightly in shock, but I got it done, and now, 4 months later, I still only wear studs (and I get slightly nauseous whenever I change them), but I’m so, so happy - now I can finally wear that final touch to an outfit which I have missed so many times before!

I need to get fitted for a bra. Since last January, I’ve gone from a D to a B, and so I’m wearing bras from 10th grade… like… 2000. I need to man up, get new bras, and figure out what size I really am.

I had to get over some akwardness during my dress fittings. I have very little to show up top, and it made sense to sew cups into my dress and skip the bra route all together. When I agreed to the plan, it didnt occur to me that I would then be getting near naked with a sales lady everytime I tried the dress on.. a little akward, especially because it was a different girl every time!

Good bras’s are definitely worth it. My mom couldn’t believe the fit difference after a fitting at Nordstrom’s, after she got over her heart attack over a $90.00 bras

I am with you. I can NEVER find a bra that fits. Not only are my boobs ridiculously saggy (TMI?), but they are also apparently disproportionately large to my rib cage. Mr. Veggie doesn’t seem to mind. :) I’ve given up on trying to ever buy a bra in a dept. store and even VS doesn’t carry my size. Custom bra fittings are amazing. Good for you for hikin’ those girls up. Here’s hoping I can find a strapless that works for the big day.

I got my wedding undergarments at The Maddox Shop, they were very helpful.

I love love love my bras! I got them at a specialty shop that sells a lot of lines from Europe (where they understand women better than any American company). I think everyone should go and be fitted. Makes a world of difference!
