Mrs. Taco, San Francisco Age and Occupation: 29, writer/editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 37, editor Engagement Date: May 13, 2009 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: The Green Room at the War Memorial Veterans Building About Me: I like laughing and talking with good friends over good food and good drink, be it wine, cocktail, or brew. I write and edit things for fun and profit, but I rarely "write" these days without a keyboard and high-speed internets. Favorites include Mr. Taco, my Boston terrier, San Francisco, getting out of town, and the Roaring ’20s. I was kind-of planning a wedding since roughly 2006, when I discovered "Whose Wedding Is It Anyway?" on the WE channel. I ran and didn't look back with a theme I called "urban vintage," and it culminated in the most magical day a taco could ask for.
About Mrs. Taco

All Dresses, All the Time

April 12th, 2010 @ 2:13 pm by Mrs. Taco

This bridesmaid dress shopping is something else, isn’t it? There are a million different colors and designers, many of which will fit your color or theme. Things that look good in photos or online might look hideous in person, and vice-versa. As with most modeling, the Model Ladies in the photos are there to function like hangers; most body types won’t do this in the same dress. Since they are your friends, you should consider how they feel and what makes them comfortable/uncomfortable. And even though you want everyone to like what they’re wearing, you want you to like what they’re wearing, too. There’s nothing like it, really.

It was mildly annoying how the bridal shops we went to did not have a huge selection of dresses or sizes to try on. But, given the information above, it’s hard to have something for everyone. After our first trip out together, we decided a few things:

  • Alfred Angelo was the favorite designer.
  • Wine was the color.
  • Satin. No to chiffon, taffeta, or organza.
  • Everyone could wear different dresses, as long as they were all the same color/designer.

After some back and forth and two trips (thanks, girls) to the Alfred Angelo store in Roseville, CA, we finally decided on two dresses for the five ladies. Taco BMs would kill me if I put the dress photos up for the whole hive to see, so let’s stick with the corporate photos.

Three will wear this one:

I like the side gathering, the sweetheart neckline (as one BM puts it, “tasty boob”), and the corset lacing in the back. We figured the lacing, while also pretty, could also help with alteration costs down the line.

Two ladies are wearing this one:

Yes to “tasty boob” and the non-BM-y cocktail thing it has going on. It’s vaguely Deco, which I liked the most about it.

For color reference, this is Alfred Angelo “wine” as it is in perfect lighting from the catalog/website:

(All images from Alfred Angelo online)

As a friend put it, it’s not the dark, inky color of wine in a glass (yum), but more like a spot of dried wine on a piece of paper.

The dresses have been ordered and they should show up in July. This, of course, hasn’t stopped me from staring at the swatch incessantly, worrying that the color is “too magenta”. I don’t know where I get this stuff.

If you let your bridesmaids pick their own dresses, what were the guidelines you set for them, if any?

I set the length and the color. The rest was totally up to them. They all somehow ended up in the same dress anyway, though!

Color and length were my only two criterions, but they’re challenging my length request so we’ll see! One of my BM selected the 1st Alfred Angelo dress as an option too.

I wanted all of my girls in the same dress (we are having a formal wedding so I think the this adds to the formality). But I wanted them to choose the dress. My guidelines were that the dress had to be black and no taffeta (black taffeta looks too much like a trash bag to me lol)! So we all went to the store and they pulled probably 50 dresses to try on - and all of my girls tried them all on lol. There were so many gorgeous ones that looked awesome on all of them!!

My girls kept asking me what I wanted them to wear but I really wanted them to pick out the dress and love it and feel good in it! In the end they did and they all look gorgeous in it!

Thanks for the info. I’m tackling the BM dresses next month and I am totally overwhelmed by the amount of choice out there. Do you mind giving a price range for the dresses you picked? I live near Roseville and I am considering that store, too.

They are picking their own, so long as they are navy, satin, and short. :)

I picked out the colour.

And my other requirements were with my BMs in mind:

The dress had to suit their body types

The dress had to be (potentially) wearable again somewhere

I found and loved the Enzoani LOVE collection. I have 7 bridesmaids and found 7 satin, eggplant dresses for them to pick from. Somehow each girl picked a different dress so there won’t be any overlap :)

I picked the designer (Bill Levkoff) and the color (Royal blue), the girls voted for knee length dresses. Two will be wearing one style, and two another style.

Haha, I too obsess over my choice of wine color. Mine is the “dark, inky color of wine in a glass” and I stare at it wondering if it’s too red. I am a crazy lady.

those are awesome dresses.
I have a list of 6 styles that I’m ok with. All have straps, only 1 is full length, and clover green is the color. The 6 styles are ones that they helped pick out, now they just have to decide which one they want.

I love Alfred Angelo! The first one was one of the ones my BMs could choose from!
