About Mrs. Octopus

The Weddings That Weren’t

April 12th, 2010 @ 4:31 pm by Mrs. Octopus

Before Mr. Octopus and I were “officially” engaged, I, ahem, occasionally partook in a bit of pre-planning. I didn’t come to any major decisions—no purchases, no deposits, nothing irreversible—but I did indulge in a fair bit of the fun, fluffy stuff. I looked at flowers, thought about colors, researched photographers and venues. Because of that, I was becoming more and more certain, convinced, absolutely positive, that I knew exactly what I wanted the look and feel of our wedding to be. Once the planning really got underway, it was going to be smoooooth sailing!

Sigh.

Now that a lot of the big decisions have been made and the little-detail-planning is the name of the game, I’d say my ideas for the general aesthetic of the wedding have gone through two distinct transformations before landing where they are now (which is the final version, fo realz!). Wanna see the weddings I’m not having?

Wedding #1

The Weddings That Weren't : wedding color schemes decor pittsburgh Garden01

Phipps Conservatory, botanical drawing, invitations, cake, bouquet.

My first idea was based on a venue in Pittsburgh that I love: Phipps Conservatory. It’s the stunning building pictured on this board, and it’s a big, fabulous garden center. When I was really hoping to land this place, my ideas revolved around, obviously, a garden theme. Sage green, cream, gold, dark pink… botanical illustrations… little twinkly lights and candles… this plan was cut tragically short when I learned that Phipps’s rental fee was substantially more than we were able to pay.

Wedding #2

The Weddings That Weren't : wedding color schemes decor pittsburgh Library

Hogwarts-y hall, book centerpieces, quill, book invitations, calligraphy invites.

When the garden plan was scrapped, my next concept was kind of a “cozied up in an old library” idea. I tossed around ideas like stacked antique books under the centerpieces, calligraphy, a vintage typewriter for a guestbook. I would look at pictures like these and think, yes! The library at Hogwarts! Edgar Allen Poe! Leather! Dark wood! Fantastic!

Two problems here: one, I couldn’t find a venue that would blend with a theme like that. Two, while spending an evening of celebration holed up in a library for six hours sounds absolutely perfect to an EPIC NERD like myself, the inescapable fact is that libraries are kind of… solemn. Quiet. “Victor Hugo scribbling on parchment by candlelight,” which is, I swear to you, a phase that actually ran through my mind several times, does not exactly scream “festive”. Or “party”.  Or “Mr. Octopus”, at all.

At that point, I had to have a bit of a talk with myself. I realized I was getting way too invested in having a distinct and identifiable theme and motif in our wedding, and it was holding me back, not helping me. While I knew that having colors and a style in mind was helpful in choosing flowers, invitations, and other details, I was too wrapped up in it. I was losing sight of the fact that we are getting married, not set-designing a local theater production.

Next, I’ll show you the final direction our wedding is going.

Did you have a hard time deciding how you wanted your wedding to look? How did you ultimately make the decision?

I had all sorts of ideas before we were engaged, but I’ve had to come to grips with the fact that these were ideas of a wedding *I* would like, and not one that truly represents the life my fiance and I have together. I still love some of my ideas and visions from plannings past, but our vision now is much more realistic and is a tribute to both of us, as it should be.

I totally had a hard time with the “theme” problem! Finally, one of my BMs helped me out when I was stressing that I couldn’t find “one” thing that fit us as a couple. She said: “Themes are lame and constricting.” And I think she might be right. YOU and the MR. are the theme, right? ;-)

I decided fairly early on I wanted a pick n mix wedding, sorta… Keep the bits of trad weddings that work, shake it up enough to pacify our oddball tendencies, and generally try to keep the whole thing pretty relaxed! I actually chose our colour scheme from a favourite primark scarf: deep pink & apricot. Love it. The two colours just bounce off each other. Looking forward to getting into the smaller details now!

Love the library… but then I’m a geek, too..!!

i had a few different ideas though i realized they were too stuffy and fancy for us, and especially me. i eventually settled on a backyard barbeque kind of feel after deciding i wanted pulled pork sandwiches as part of the menu.

This cracked me up as I had to come to the realization that my FI or I where from families where formal sit down dinners and waltzing were going to be appreciated. So yes I basically pictured my wedding as some sort of Jane Austen / I Love Lucy episode which did not go over well at all.

Oh my goodness that second library-ish one sounds amazing to me. But, I agree that it’s not exactly party material. And NOTHING like my fiance!

I think I always knew in my heart of hearts that I wanted a country-ish outdoor wedding, which we’re having … but I begged people to be on board for a beach wedding and then an avant-garde indie kinda urban wedding before I settled in and sent in deposits.

If these were the weddings you’re not having, I can’t wait to see what you really loved and went with!

I went through that too, for a while I was set on a beach wedding in Miami (where Mr TM is from) with colors of navy and turquoise, which I still love!

Aw, I too am a ‘burgh bride and also “pre-planned” and fantasized about Phipps…I feel your pain about the price and we also are going elsewhere, in the burbs.

I went to a reception at Phipps and ,although lovely to look at, IT WAS WAY TO HOT! It was like we were in a greenhouse or something >.<

Ahh Phipps was my dream location too. But they were booked up for every weekend in the summer by the time I called in September! We are doing it at Mellon Park/Pburgh Center for the Arts instead. Still along the same garden, floral theme, but I understand the allure of Phipps Conservatory.

I too was head over heels for Phipps but was shocked to see it was something like $15,000 to rent the entire place. =( I like the things you chose to rent instead! I would have never thought to rent the children’s museum.

@TheReasonabLeGal: We too are doing Mellon Park! We had to compromise on not going with the center sadly as we are paying for the wedding ourselves and couldn’t deal with all the additional rental expenses. =(

I ended up giving up on a theme… I just kind of went with a feeling if that makes sense? Salt air was my jokey theme because I didn’t have one, no real colors (besides ocean blues lol) and I had all kinds of shells and starfish. It all blended well and I don’t think anyone stopped and went “hey… there’s no THEME!” so it’s all good if you don’t have one.

However, that library one makes me want to get married in a library a la Sex and the City. I do love Jessica Claire’s invites even if she did kill books for them (le sigh).

Can’t wait to see what it is!

Well the bf and I are not engaged but we are brainstorming ideas already… we’ve decided on colors (orange and blue) and I want an outdoor ceremony indoor reception. I was thinking about having it in an Old Opera house or a B&B… and then I discovered Summer Camp themed weddings and thats what Iwant now. A weekend of festivities with friends. Because that would be so fun and so US
