Mrs. Oyster's Picture
Mrs. Oyster, Dallas Age and Occupation: 30, Music Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 46, Art Teacher Engagement Date: January 9, 2009 Wedding Date: July 2010 Venue: The Tower Club About Me: I'm a Texa-Californian with a penchant for sparkly things and a tendency to think a lot. I've been known to sing random songs or dance when there is no music on. My fiance and I love world culture, we love to travel, and we have an incredibly eclectic taste in music. We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to celebrate our marriage with our family & closest friends. We're planning an “urban black-tie” wedding and hope to incorporate our personalities and some of our own interests. We look forward to a life of love, laughter, good music, beautiful art, and to creating our home together with our four (!) cats.
About Mrs. Oyster

Mr. O and I were adamant about our desire to eliminate traditional, cheesy wedding cakes. I just couldn’t get into the idea of the cake as “the center of the wedding” as one famous local cake baker has said. I can’t find that quote (which was part of the intro of one of those “bake a wedding cake” shows), but I did find this cute clip of a someone making a wedding cake in 3 minutes:

We were content with our idea of having some kind of alternate cake structure, cake table, or dessert table, or maybe even little Whole Foods round cakes for each table (mmm!). What we weren’t content with was the idea of having to pick up all these little cakes, deliver them, and set them out ourselves…

And what would we put them on? Sure, it would save money, but I don’t think my sanity is worth the small amount we’d be saving.

So, we caved. Since Mr. Oyster is an artist, he can appreciate the idea of a wedding cake that is also a work of art. But our philosophy (as it is with many aspects of this wedding) is that we should either get exactly what we’d like, or nothing at all. Since we can’t afford one of these lovely works of art, we’ll just get a very simple cake and call it a day.

Our wedding is a classic ballroom wedding in an urban setting (This is what I mean by “urban black-tie…” I don’t know, I made it up!). This means we should have a cake that’s a little modern, subtly interesting, and not too flowery or “froufy”. Serving about 130 guests, our cake should be about 4 tiers. Here are some of the choices we’re looking at:

I love it: nice and simple! A clean, classic design with double beading at each layer reminds me of a nicely painted room with crown molding. The scroll designs are pretty, but we are not really into them. If we did have a scroll-y cake, though, I’d like to mix things up by combining shapes and a little color.

This one is from one of the vendors we’re considering, Dallas Affaires Cake Co. Their cakes are beautifully designed and consistent. I like the two-tone effect on this one.

Here’s one from another cake vendor we like, Elena’s Cakes. It’s another combined shape one… but what if the vertical stripes were just stripes (and not flowery stripes)? It might look nice. Plus it would mimic the light fixtures at our venue, which I initially hated but have since made peace with.

A post like this wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t include our dream cake. We love the idea of this incredibly unique and beautiful cake by Sylvia Weinstock, featured on the cover of Martha Stewart Weddings’ anniversary issue:

Wow! What beautiful, stunning work. Mr. Oyster makes the excellent point that sugar flowers are pointless if they look exactly like real ones. With florists decorating cakes nowadays, why pay for all those hours of labor?

But if the flowers look like something you’d want to eat? If they look so organically a part of the cake that they seem to have grown out of it? Well then, they seem perfectly justifiable in that sense. It’s true; cake was among the lowest of Mr. Oyster’s and my priorities, and paying for something whose value seems intangible is difficult for us. But this cake? It’s just beautiful and *different*. It doesn’t look like cake! It’s just a mound of beautiful white flowers. Who wouldn’t want to eat that?

Barring the Weinstock masterpiece, I think I like the simple square cake best. A version of it is featured on the front of Martha Stewart’s wedding webpage (and in the “Real Weddings” feature of Christopher & Liezel):

We'll Have Our Cake, and We'll Eat It : wedding cake dallas Cakems02 cake+ms02

Oh, and this is our cake cutting song! Why not have a little fun with it?

**Update: Mr. Oyster, who is currently suffering from a cold (poor sweetie!), has pointed out that the Weinstock cake now looks to him like a big pile of wadded up tissues. Ew! Nothing like a guy’s point of view to make you see things in a different light.

Have you picked your Bakery yet? I’d recommend that you check out Bake Rejoice! in downtown Plano. Joyce is the former head designer at Fancy Cakes by Lauren. We got a great deal on our fabulous and creative (and yummy!) cakes. We checked out other big name bakeries and found Joyce’s prices to be far more reasonable.

Yeah, our cake is simple. It’s a square 4-tier w/ white decorator’s icing, and we are having her “rib” or “pleat” the icing. It will have a black ribbon around each layer and a green hydrangea on the three lower layers w/ a simple monogram on top.

I am drawn, naturally, to simple cleaner lines, as is my FI, so it made sense for us to not have TOO fru-fru of a cake. Those detailed, fondant, decorated cakes are BEAUTIFUL, but not for us.

I lol-ed at the wadded up tissue comment! I had a similar moment when we were looking at flowers. I liked the look of some of the carnation pomadors, when they carnations are really tightly packed … right up until someone said they looked like shower loofahs. Now whenever I look at them, that’s all I can see and it makes me break out laughing. At least we found these things out before we paid for them!

What about something different like a pie table, or a cake made out of rice krispie treats or something? Why pay for something you don’t like when there are plenty of other options? I found the image below in a google search for alternative wedding cakes.

We’re having a square cake too! 5 simple and clean tiers with small accents of roses and lilies and ribbon wrapped around the base of each tier. We’re getting our cake from Delicious Cakes. They have an office in Addison and Southlake. The cake is what I’m most looking forward to at the reception for some odd reason… I normally don’t care much for cake, but after our tasting - I’ve been craving it constantly!!

I too, on one of those lovely wedding cake shows I love so much, have heard a famous baker say that “the cake is the center of the wedding.” Um, Hellooo, I know that’s your job, but that’s a tad bit overstated, don’t ya think? And here I thought the bride and groom were the center of the wedding :)
Silly me :)

I totally agree with you and think it’s absolutely ridiculous that the wedding industry is now obsessed with wedding cakes claiming they are the most important part of the wedding! I never notice the cake and almost never eat it as I don’t like desserts and it’s usually made several days before the wedding and very dry.

Despite that, we always planned on getting a traditional wedding cake just for the cake cutting part of the wedding. And to pass it out to guests as dessert. But if I see one more show hating on traditional ‘looking’ cakes saying plain cakes are boring I’m going to scream.

I agree. I mean, anything dealing with cake is usually right up my alley, but the most important part of the wedding? Nice spin!

I love the cakes you chose, but I don’t especially think that any of them (except maybe the first) are exactly “simple”! I think you’ve got some pretty fancy cakes here. With that said, I like the first one best.

I totally agree with you! I never understood the idea that the cake was supposed to be the center of attention! Isnt that the role of the bride and groom? I couldnt care less about the cake. As long as it tastes good I dont care about asthetics and by the time cake is served, I am always full. If cake wasnt included in my venue, I probably wouldnt have it. My friend will have homemade cakes at her wedding and I am super excited! I love cakes that just look like your aunts and grandma made it with the whipped frosting and crooked shape. They always taste better to me anyway then the “made up” ones.

Cake was so low on our list that we decided not to have one for the ceremony - especially after we were told a teeny cake that serves 6 PEOPLE would cost us $125. No thanks! I love your inspiration photos though!

I found your blog via google alert and was attracted to the video. I couldn’t resist sending you my speedy version of making a wedding cake video.

Interesting good conversation on your blog about wedding cakes and wedding planning. I love all of the cakes you are posting too. Square cakes are my favorite. Sounds like you made a great choice. Can’t wait to see the finished product.
