Dresses for the Girls, 2

April 13th, 2010 @ 12:30 pm by Mrs. Starfish

After narrowing down a few ideas for the bridesmaids’ dresses, I decided I was in love with the simplicity of the Alfred Sung D446 on the Dessy website, which is the dress on the right.

I called up every store in MA and RI that carries Alfred Sung. At the time, the spring collection just came out and I could only find one store that carried the D446. So I booked an appointment at Flair Bridesmaids.

Well, apparently I know nothing about fabrics.

I had decided early on that I want the girls in a casual and comfortable fabric, nothing with a shine (I have it stuck in my head that shine equals fancy). So when I got to Flair I was surprised to find out that the D446 only comes in a shiny fabric called Dupioni. If I had clicked on the swatch on the website, I would have easily realized that this was a fancy fabric.

When I looked through the store, it seemed like everything was in fancy fabrics. But I explained to my consultant, Leah, the vibe and feel I was looking for: a bit casual, navy cocktail length, something that looks very “Newportish”.

Leah came up with a few options, some shiny, some not. I had Sister Starfish act as a model and try on quite a few dresses. I ended up liking a few, but the one I loved was a dress by Coren Moore. It is absolutely perfect!

The Starfish girls will be wearing the Coren Moore “Courtney” dress in cotton sateen. To have my MOH, Sister Starfish, stand out a bit she’ll be the only one with a sash. I can’t find an exact match, but here it is in silk.

After narrowing down the choices, the Starfish Girls and I booked a second appointment for fittings. Luckily they all loved it, or at least that’s what they told me… but seriously, I think they really do, which is so awesome. I was really stressed about finding something that they would all feel comfortable and look good in. I was so happy after each bridesmaid tried it on—it was super flattering on everyone! A couple even said they will wear it again and will have to schedule with each other so they don’t all show up at the same event wearing it.

Did you stress about finding the perfect bridesmaids’ dresses? Did your girls end up happy with your choice?

How funny! I picked out the exact same three options, and then rejected them for the exact same reason :) Although my MOH was like, uh, I’ll just buy the middle one as a regular party dress.

I picked short navy blue dresses too! They’re really pretty and they have pockets and required no alterations which the girls all loved!! Plus they all liked that the dress could definitely be worn again for other occasions too!

I wish I had chosen navy…. :(

My colors are pink, and I thought I was choosing a dark fuschia/purple pink… NOPE. When all the dresses came in, it’s more of a brighter pepto pink. I’m not ecstatic with it but we’ll have to make it work…

That looks like it is a super cute and flattering shape! I ended up going with short and Navy, the thing I had the most trouble with was finding a dress with straps to provide enough support for my bustier maids!

Those looks great! I’m stressing over BM dresses too, but will be BM shopping with my MOH this weekend so hopefully we’ll come out triumphant after this weekend!

I was also disappointed by the fabric used for those Alfred Sung dresses! On the website it looks a lot more “matte”, but when we went in to try them on … I didn’t like it at all. I ended up going the DB route because the cotton sateen there is super comfy.

I recently got engaged and am just snagged my bridesmaid dresses @ Anthropologie. I didn’t see a picture of the dress I purchased online, but they are very similar to the dress on the far right. Plus, the dress comes with POCKETS!! WOOT!!! They were priced at $98.00, but I snagged them in March, the month of my birthday and was able to use my birthday discount on them so it came out to only $85.00 each dress! HURAAH!!!

Love the dresses and they’ll be so cute in your wedding. I’m currently under major bm dress stress. I just want to make sure they’re still all my friends after I pick it :P

Ha, seeing this post was almost like a mirror image to one of my blog posts…same dresses! Except we went with peau de soie as well (same design, different fabric and different style number), because it is much lighter and less like a curtain. :)
