The Wedding That Is

April 13th, 2010 @ 10:43 am by Mrs. Octopus

When I left off, I was getting myself worked up into a tizzy over the way our wedding would look. I was getting so hung up on the idea of needing to have a distinct motif on which to base all my choices that it was making me feel stressed and pressured.

So I said, “this is for the birds!” and decided to scrap the idea of a theme entirely. It was making me feel unnecessarily flipped out, so I gave up on having some kind of narrative which I could use to precisely match all the different elements of our wedding. Now, I’m just using some basic guidelines to make our decisions.

The colors are jewel tones of red and purple, with accents of gold.

The atmosphere of our reception venue is quirky, whimsical, and striking,

so I’m looking for decor that accompanies that.

I’ve been thinking about different shapes of bud vases filled with varieties of flowers, as well as these ridiculously awesome votives wrapped with vellum-printed book pages. (Sources: here and here.)

I’m planning to include details that are personalized, fun, festive, and feel like “us”.

I love, love, looooove when people display photos at weddings. (Source)

Having these personalized buttons for guests to pin all over their clothes–which my guests WILL do–slays me with its cuteness. Sources here and here.

Taking this lackadaisical approach to decor/detail planning makes me feel a lot better. I think the combination of following the very basic plan outlined above, just trusting my instincts, and trying not to get overly analytical about things that, in the grand scheme of things, are pretty minor, is a recipe for success. It’s all going to turn out fine.

How did you decide your vision for your wedding? Was having a theme helpful or burdensome to you?

Love those deep reds! I’m considering deep red/almost black for my bouquet :). Either that or all white, go figure.

I LOVE all of your awesome ideas way more than any generic theme! I think that sometimes it’s easy to sum up what we like in a theme, but sometimes its not and either way is totally fine! But definitely not worth stressing over! Sounds like you know the types of stuff you wanna see and I’m sure it will turn out fabulous! Can’t wait to see!

I am SO with you on this! I started out trying to come up with some clever theme, and then trying to fit all the wedding components into said theme. It started to drive me nuts, so I decided to give up on it and now I feel so liberated!

When people I ask me what the theme is now I say, “The theme of our wedding is ‘wedding’.”

I also gave up on the idea of a theme. It just gets to be too much and the personality of the couple gets lost. At least that’s what was happening to us. So now we pass every idea through the ‘is it us’ filter. If it isn’t it’s tossed out. Love all the personal touches to your reception. Too cute! Those are the ideas that draw my attention more than ‘theme’ types. Thinking about steeling the hanging photos idea, in place of our currently planned slideshow. We shall see. :-)

We started out with a theme, but it was starting to unnecessarily flip me out as well. We ditched that idea and instead we’ve made sure to carry our colors (navy blue, light blue & ivory) throughout everything and since I designed our monogram and all of our printed materials, I have carried the monogram, pantone colors and fonts through every invite, place card, program, etc. I think as long as everything looks pretty consistent there’s really no need for a theme unless you want one!

Thanks for sharing some of the fun little details you have planned for your day! LOVE the buttons! : )

We decided (or I decided) on our theme by going through all my inspiration pictures and weeding out the ones that didn’t go. Once I did that it was easy to see what I was leaning towards most and I went with that.
From those pictures I created and inspiration board. Then when I’d have a new idea or see something I wanted to add, I’d make myself consult the board and if it didn’t match it was out ;-)
I love your ‘wedding that is’ I cannot wait to see it come together :)

Oh my gosh I love those vellum wrapped candles! I can’t find them using the links that you posted, do you have a more direct link? I either need to buy them or figure out how to make them! I also love your color scheme, very dramatic and elegant.

Choosing a specific type of flower, particular flower colors, and how much they cost, and arranging them and find a florist was stressing me out big time and it wasn’t even fun!! So, like you, I scraped a theme idea entirely and just decided that 2 days before the wedding I’ll go to the market or greocery store and pick up a bunch of the prettiest flowers I can find that day and call it done. That decisions feels great! I’m free and way less stressed! Good for you for nixing a specific theme idea too :-)

It’s awesome to see someone who also wants to incorporate lab glass into the wedding! I have 8 really awesome old 2ft tall mosquito jars from when our lab was a malaria lab in the 60’s that I want to find a way to incorporate into our wedding reception.

Such a relief to read how many people had trouble with the “theme” concept!

@hergreenapples: “The theme of our wedding is wedding” made me LOL. That’s basically what I’m going for too.

I’m already married, but those vases are making me swoon! I want them all over my living room.
Also, I didn’t give up my theme of “Fancy Party in the Woods”, but I relaxed it greatly as time went on.
