Mrs. Lobster's Picture
Mrs. Lobster, Brooklyn Age and Occupation: 29, Finance Girl Fiance's Age and Occupation: 33, Finance Boy Engagement Date: July 25, 2009 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: Stage 6 Steiner Studios About Me: I'm a New York-born, Virginia-bred girl who's found her way back to the big city. Mr. Lobster and I met in grad school and have been together ever since. I'm clueless about DIY but am an avid online shopper and love all things polka dots, stripes, and ruffles! When I'm not making wedding lists, you can find me looking for snacks, watching Gilmore Girls, or hanging out with Mr. Lobster and our new puppy Buddy! We are planning a fancy-pantsy Brooklyn wedding for a hot New York summer night which is sure to be a misadventure in the making.
About Mrs. Lobster

Oh New York. How I love thee. When I started looking at venues with Mr. Lobster, I was overwhelmed with possibilities. They were so many and they were so diverse. I could be a Central Park bride, a Meatpacking loft bride, repurposed old building bride, garden bride, a modern bride. I wanted to be all of them! One of the funnest parts of being engaged was daydreaming about the perfect venue. Here are some of my faves from the search:

For the garden bride, Brooklyn Botanic Gardens:

What a dream to be married in Cherry Blossom season—I love the pink dreaminess of the trees! No additional decor would be needed.

Springy Wedding

The Palm House lit up (where the wedding receptions are held). There is a cute lily pad pond around which you can have cocktail receptions.

For the repurposed old building bride, The Foundry, a 19th century industrial building. I love the exposed brick and the multiple levels.

For the unconventional bride, 620 Loft and Garden. I LOVE this place. It’s the awesome combination of garden high atop the city. Check out the rooftop garden in Midtown Manhattan overlooking St. Patrick’s Cathedral (in the left side of the photo).

For the New York fancy schmancy bride, Capitale. Check out those Grecian columns:

With all these beautiful and diverse venues, how would I choose? Did you know what kind of bride you were before you found your venue?

Nope. We didn’t want to start with a set idea, since the venue would cdictate the look of the wedding.

I only knew that I didn’t want my wedding reception to be in a hotel ballroom with no windows. (That’s so common in the midwest). I only knew my place had to have tons of windows. I ended up choosing a place where three of the 4 walls were floor to ceiling glass.

We knew we wanted something with a “New York” feel, so we were set on getting married in the city–and also, we were too lazy to even take the train out to the other boroughs to check out venues. BUT if we hadn’t been so lazy, Brooklyn Botanical Gardens woul have been at the top of my list–it’s GORGEOUS!

I knew that I was a restaurant bride. It adds a non-traditional element to the wedding without requiring a completely non-traditional wedding. It’s not too fancy, it’s cheaper than “proper” wedding venues, and you’re guaranteed to get great food. Plus, my parents got married in a restaurant, so that makes it extra special!

The downside? Logistics. There’s no space designated for the bridal party to get ready, there’s no proper “aisle” to walk down, and finding good photo spots can be difficult since the place is still open for business in the main dining areas and patios outside.

AHh, love 620 Loft and Garden - looks fab! I thought I was a repurposed old building bride, but it turns out I wasn’t :)

Gorgeous! I love that rooftop garden!

I always wanted to get married outside, then found this neat old theater that I was super close to booking. Then I reverted to my previous leanings, and we’re getting married in a garden. It’s gorgeous, and I’m so glad that I went with what I always wanted.

Wow, you NY brides really are spoiled for choice! My no.1 consideration was to have some nice photo locations very near at hand. And voila, our venue overlooks Norman castle ruins from one plate glass window, and sloping church gardens from the other. Love it.

We both refused to have it in one of the wedding factories in our hometown. We wanted it to be in a hotel but I didn’t want the standard windowless boxy hotel ballroom. HE actually found the perfect place - it has a year round tent that’s climate controlled & fantastic.

Faint and die at the garden/rooftop venue. It’s the best of both worlds: cityscape AND greenery in the pics!! Wow.

I, too, had to look at every kind of venue with the focus on lofty places. Then, I found an old mansion with this beautiful staircase and grand ballroon and knew that was the place. Instantly the whole wedding was in my head and I knew that was the place.

I’ve always known I wanted an inside wedding, b’cuz I hate bugs and being uncertain of whether it would rain. Even if it rained the day before and was sunny on the big day, it might be still wet or muddy out yuck! I’ve since honed it down to a huge open space with tall ceilings and tons of windows. :D

But otherwise I LOVE the Brooklyn garden venue, the blossoms are so gorgeous!!!

i definitely knew i was a garden bride, and that made it SO difficult to find a venue. there are so many “traditional” ballroom-type settings around here to choose from, but not many others. it was hard work to find my venue, but totally worth it-it’s gorgeous!

Those venues are absolutely stunning. I’m guessing you have another and even better one up your sleeve though!

with every venue i looked at, i imagined myself as a different kind of bride. in the end, it came down to the mundane things like cost and logistics. but these are all beautiful and can’t wait to hear how you finally decided on your venue!
