Dancing with Dad

April 14th, 2010 @ 1:40 pm by Mrs. Starfish

I’ve been searching for a while for the perfect father daughter dance song.

I love Cinderella, by Steven Curtis Chapman. It’s a really sweet song about a dad whose little girl is growing up. The song kind of emphasizes living in the moment and sharing one special last dance.

Rascal Flatts’ My Wish For You is another favorite. I recently fell in love with country music when my future in-laws introduced me it on our last vacation together, and want to include a bit at the wedding. It’s such a perfect song for either the father-daughter or mother-son dance. It is about the wishes a parent has for their child (actually, it isn’t technically for parents, but that’s the what I think when I hear it). I think the lyrics are so perfect, and FMIL Starfish thought so, too. She told me that she was thinking of using it for the mother-son dance.

My new love for country led also led me to Tim McGraw’s My Little Girl. It’s a really sweet song about a father remembering special moments with his daughter, while trying to let go, which is kind of perfect for a wedding!

I fell in love with Heartland’s I Loved Her First. I feel like this is the ultimate father-daughter dance song. I’ve heard it at multiple weddings and it always gets me a little teary-eyed. This probably would have been my first choice, but Sister Starfish danced with our dad to it last year at her wedding. I’m sure she wouldn’t mind if I used it again, but I want to have my own special song to dance with Father Starfish to.

Lastly, I recently heard Edwin McCain’s Walk With You. If you haven’t heard it yet, you should check it out. It’s about a father walking his daughter down the aisle on her wedding day. It’s possibly my new favorite.

I’ve been debating which song to choose, and then I realized I should let Starfish Dad choose. I’m planning to make him a CD with my top songs and let him choose.

What song did you pick for your father daughter dance? Are there any amazing ones I’m missing on my list?

My dad had total choice and he’s surprising me with it! I can’t wait to find out what it is.

We’re having trouble choosing one. I’m going to listen to Edwin McCain’s right now. I love his music.

A piece of me wants a fun song, but I think my dad really wants to bring the house down. His first choice was Cinderella, but I can’t make it through that song without being a blubbering mess, so I said no way. I love My Little Girl too.
Dad’s new favorite is It Won’t Be Like This For Long by Darius Rucker. It’s a great song.
TOO MANY CHOICES!

I love country music and am in search of one for me and the FI’s first dance. I haven’t gotten around to the father-daughter song yet, but all the above mentioned are awesome songs!!

You have some great choices! I had never heard the Edwin McCain song before. I <3 him big time!!

Right now we’re leaning towards “Find Your Wings” by Mark Harris. I was in tears when I first heard it.

My dad is big into searching songs. I think it’s really cute.

My dad and I are dancing to Stealing Cinderella by Chuck Wicks. If you haven’t heard it before, you should take a listen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KHAaRxyuQk

I think “Walk With You” is my favorite right now too. I love “Cinderella” and it always makes me teary-eyed, but I am trying to move away from songs that actually say something about me not being my Dad’s little girl any more. Because really, that isn’t true. So I guess I am looking for something that is sweet but not necessarily SAD.

I had my dad pick between Heartlands “I Loved Her First” and Rascal Flatts “My Wish”. He chose I Loved Her First, he got teary eyed just listening to it.

It sounds kind of dorky, I know, but we already have a song -Rainy Night in Soho by the Pogues. The lyrics aren’t relevant, but they’re lovely, and it’s the song that makes us text each other when we’ve had a few to drink and feel sentimental ;) Furthermore, my beloved asked Dad for my hand before a Pogues gig!

I Loved Her First is so amazing… I cry every time I read the lyrics!

I’ve always really liked “Daughter” by Loudon Wainwright … mostly because the daughter character in it is more sassy than in a lot of the typical father-daughter songs.

The father-daughter dance at my wedding was ‘Scarlet Ribbons’ by Roisin Murphy. It was awesome, and is now one of his favorite songs.

did you know that SCC’s daughter was tragically killed and he wrote another verse for the song “cinderella”?

The Edwin McCain song is beautiful, and I would like to choose it. Unfortunately, I am really emotional and began sobbing the first 10 seconds of the song. Yes, my face was WET!! This would not be a good thing on my wedding day since I would like to have my makeup on at the end of the night!! So my Dad and I are going to dance to Brown-Eyed Girl by Van Morrison, so we can bust a move and (hopefully!) I will not sob uncontrollably. I would consider this fact before you choose the song you and your father dance to.

With tara’s response, Chapman also said (for the past few years while his daughter went to Baylor he would play at the free Christmas festival concert in Waco) he wrote it originally one night when he was just so exasperated with his daughters (the little ones) when they wanted him to read to them a bedtime story and he just wanted them to go to bed. But he felt so remorseful after he thought about, so he did read them their story and then wrote the song. This was after the accident, and he got very choked up.
(personally, I would never be able to use that song simply because of how emotional it is, and I’ve seen my friends cry while listening to it- and that’s not what I want)

I was torn between Tim McGraws “My Little Girl” and Edwin McCains “Walk With You” — I had to go with my boy Tim, I cried the very first time I heard it. I’ve made a slideshow of me and my dad from when I was a baby up until our LAST dance, at my sisters wedding. (I’m tearing up talking about it… I’m such a mess… ugh)

I’m using ‘My Little Girl’ but ‘I Loved Her First’ was a strong contender! I’m making a slideshow of pictures of my dad and I to play during our dance partly because I’m a total daddy’s girl and we have ton and partly because I think he’d welcome the distraction so all of the attention won’t be on him/us during the dance.

I gave my dad some suggestions (I downloaded a LOT of music off ITunes!), but he has decided that he wants to dance to “Unforgettable” by Nat King Cole (w/Natalie Cole). I can’t say that it’s my first choice (it wasn’t even in the suggestions), but I love it. :)
