About Mrs. Star

Unlike most couples, who either maintain their individual last names after the wedding or have their common surname bestowed upon them nearly instantly by their marriage license, our shared last name was six months in the making. And our new last name was bestowed upon us by a surly county clerk in a dingy office. But that’s beside the point.

I wrote about our unique name change decision before, so I won’t bore you with how incredibly awesome my husband is again, but I just wanted to thank you all for your support and well-wishes and announce that we have completed the many steps to officially change our names together!

I Now Pronounce You... Mr. and Mrs. Star... Officially! : wedding legal nyc Img 7301 IMG_730

After the hours of trying to figure out what paperwork we needed, the four trips downtown to the civil court, the hundreds of dollars in fees, a publication in The Irish Echo newspaper, and at least a migraine or two, we finally get to start right where brides who change their names on their marriage certificate start the day after their honeymoon — with trips to the DMV, Social Security Card funtimes, and sit-downs with the bank manager.

Sure, it’s been a royal pain-in-the-you-know-what, but worth it? You betcha. We both walked around with giddy grins on all day yesterday and even felt the urge to go out to a celebratory brunch! We finally feel like our marriage is “complete”, so to speak.

Care to share your name change headaches to help make us feel better?

I totally love that you guys changed your last name…together. The hubbers and I talked about it for a minute…but his suggestions were pretty ridiculous. Plus he has a son from a previous relationship with his last name, and I don’t think baby’s mama would want to change her son’s last name to something we just picked out.

Name changing is a biotch though! Since I’m in the military, my last name is totally my identity. They don’t make it easy for you, I had to go to every office serperately to change my name; military admin, military finance, military personnel…ugh!

Congrats! I legally changed my last name five years ago, while I was going to college in a different state than I had residency, and having to continually drive back and forth or send my mom to the courthouse in our county was such a headache.

In the end, of course, it’s so rewarding, and so worth it. Congrats, Mr. and Mrs. Star - officially!!

I don’t have any headaches to share, but I wanted to say how AWESOME it is that you’ve done this. In an ideal world, I feel like this should be a common occurrence and it really bothers me how hard they make it. Both my partner and I are way too attached to our respective last names to do anything but leave as is, though.

I love that you took a picture in front of a no camera’s sign. Pair that with the complete name change and its a sure bet that you two are complete rebels. Love it. Congrats!

Mr. D wants me to start the process before the wedding and I’m dreading it. A friend of mine didn’t end up changing her name officially till 2 years after her wedding because it was so much hassle and she was so busy.

Congrats on y’alls name change!!!

So glad to see that there are others doing the name change together! I think it’s such a great acknowledgement of how you’re starting a new family together!
My fiance and I have been talking about options — I’d like to do something similar to you and research old family names… but he’s not sold on the idea yet, he’s also nervous about what his family will say…

@Entangled: Thanks! I feel like it should be an option on the NYS marriage license for both parties to change their names, too, but alas! We have a ways to go before the government is that progressive :)

@kamydoo: Do it! We were a little wary of how Mr. Star’s family would react at first, too, and though some of them were quite surprised, they have all been VERY supportive after the initial shock! And a lot of our family members have told us that they admire how we’re doing something so meaningful to us, despite how unconventional it is. Good luck!

I’m so jealous that you guys got to do this :) The FI and I both want to go this route… but have only encountered hurdles… like his family taking it as a “slap in the face” as they put it. I’m so glad you guys have shared your story though- it gives me hope we’ll work it out! :)

Congrats! My husband tried to change his middle name to my maiden name, but the state of Illinois claimed his reason for wanting the change “wasn’t valid.” They gave him an excuse about identity theft and claimed they’re cracking down on name changes so people can’t run from their credit history. Um, so I’m allowed to go through the “hassle” of changing my name, but my husband isn’t? Sooo frustrating. Anyway, glad your experience wasn’t too painful.
