Mrs. Pudding, Greater Toronto Area/Vermont Age and Occupation: 26, High School Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Computer Engineer Engagement Date: August 2008 Wedding Date: July 2010 Venue: Catholic Ceremony, Cultural Hall Reception About Me: Quite literally a citizen of the world, I was born in Poland, grew up in Canada, and now live in the beautiful state of Vermont. I love reading historical biographies, multi-tasking, teasing my hair, and, despite my height, wearing high heeled shoes. I am the ultimate klutz with an uncanny ability to put on a graceful front. Mr. Pudding and I have been dating for over six years, and are very excited to finally merge our (very large) families. We are planning a traditional Polish-Catholic wedding that is anything but predictable.
About Mrs. Pudding

Preppin’ le Pew

April 14th, 2010 @ 5:24 pm by Mrs. Pudding

In between the printing, cutting, and gluing that our semi-DIY invitations require, I have been thinking about ways to spruce up the church for our ceremony. Most churches are beautiful enough on their own, and don’t need much decoration. We will have two floral arrangements in the front, and I am planning on personalizing a runner to decorate the aisle. The only thing missing is some pew decorations.

Unfortunately, much like the famous Casanova above, most of the ideas for pew decorations that I was able to find were a little too fussy and frou frou, and not at all desirable.

Here are some of the usual suspects:

BOWS: This is the least expensive and probably easiest option. The bows can be made ahead of time, or even purchased already made, since there is more than one online retailer selling variations of these for under $10 each. Unfortunately, I just don’t love them.

TULLE: I suppose that this option could work, if we kept it really simple. Unfortunately, I was informed that hanging tulle off of the pews was a fire hazard, so this option is out.

FLOWERS: In my opinion, this is the most attractive option. Unfortunately, flowers also happen to be the most expensive one. Our budget has really been stretched and flexed in the last couple of weeks, and I really want to keep this project simple. Also, I won’t be able to put the flowers together myself, which of course adds to the expense.

So hive, I’m at a loss. Are these my only options for pew decorations? How are you preppin’ your pews?

We are doing pew cones with flowers in them. We are making the pew cones ourselves and the florist is filling with baby’s breath and other two roses. So it is a cheaper option than doing just flowers in general. We are also not doing them on EVERY pew to make it cheaper.

I’ve been to a few weddings with no pew decorations, maybe an arrangement in the front of the church. I never missed them or thought the photgraphs were lacking. Maybe in this case, simple is striking?

Um this might be my favorite blog post title ever. Preppin’ Le Pew? Genius.

What about pomanders or puff balls? Pomanders can be made ahead of time with fake flowers to save time and money, and tissue puffs are relatively simple, easy to assemble, and cheap! They can add a pretty pop of color with out breaking the bank.

We’re going with the simple aisle runner and scattered petals!

We’re attaching 2 long stems of gladious flowers to each pew. Cheaper and different?

What about artificial flowers? They can be done ahead of time and nobody will be inspecting the pew decor too much anyway.

Instead of hanging things on the pew, we’re doing cylinder vases with pillar candles on the ground on each side of the aisle.

I found 40 hanging candle holders last year at target and I am planning on using a simple wide brown satin ribbon to hang them all from the pews. I am thinking that it will look great!

Mini-wreaths decorated with a few paper flowers? Or maybe a more structured, less froufy single bow in navy? I think that could look very sophisticated… Hmmmm, totally understand your frustration, pew decorations are annoying!

What a creative post title! I am in awe of people who can come up with amazing titles like that.

What we’re thinking about doing: balloons. The end of each pew will have a single balloon taped or tied to it (our pew ends are more like open chair arms, and most of the pews don’t even have an end, they’re just long padded benches). I wanted to alternate navy and white balloons, but navy seems to be an impossible balloon color to find so I might go with yellow, white, and royal blue.

Alternative idea if you have more traditional pews: Go to a dollar store a get $1 wooden wreaths (my local store has 9″, 10″, 13″ and 25″ right now!), a few rolls of nice ribbon (unless you already have tons laying around in a preferred color), and a few bunches of fake flowers in your colors. All you have to do is hot glue the tops of the flowers to the wreaths in whatever way looks best to you, tie or glue a length of ribbon on, and presto- pew wreaths! (You could also pick up wreath hangers instead of ribbon, I just think ribbon would look nicer.)
20 wreaths- $20; 4 Rolls ribbon- $4, 20 bunches flowers- $20, hot glue sticks- $1; TOTAL: $45 for 20 pew wreaths (estimated prices if all supplies bought at a dollar store!).

I am using satin chair sashes like these: http://www.cvlinens.com/wide-fuschia-satin-sash-p-138.html. I am tying them around the pews in a simple knot. I like the look of the tulle, but people have to get into their pews via the center aisle (side ones are too narrow), so I needed something cheap, fast, easy, and pretty. If I have extra flowers, I may stick one in the center of each knot.

I’m agreeing with Cassie, except we’ll be fetching all flowers from Flower market the day before. Will make simple bunches - sweet peas or such- keep stems long, keep in water overnight, then get super obliging friend to chop off surplus (wet) stems, and stuff a bunch in each cone about an hour before ceremony!

What could possibly go wrong!

On the plus side, tho, if it does work, it’ll prob cost about 2.50 per pew - doing every second pew - about 20-24 total - so not a fortune, really.

Forgot to say, I had considered making ribbon poms or ribbon wreaths, (as beautifully shown in the DIY section here) but quickly realised spending 15 quid EACH, on things that would take me hours EACH to make, was just plain bats.

It’s all time or money…. use whichever you’ve more of! Or a little both, if you can make it happen!

I’m with Miss Hamster. We’re just doing the white petals as our aisle as opposed to an aisle runner. No actual aisle decorations, though.

Hahahaha Miss Pudding, I officially love you!! I was so confused about your title and the adorable comic until the very last sentence of your post. I’m sorry, I don’t have any great suggestions (although I’m super curious to read through everyone’s ideas) but really needed to say: I love puns! :)
