We’ve picked out the ring, Mr. Lobster chopped some wood, cleaned out my parents’ gutters, and popped the question to my mom and dad. The only step left was to pop the question to me!
Because I was with him at our initial meeting with the jeweler, I knew the time frame the ring would be ready. And around that time frame is when I started getting antsy. Here are some things I did that normal people shouldn’t do:
DAYDREAM AWESOME PROPOSAL SITUATIONS
Uh, hello, I’d make an awesome guy if I had a girl to propose to. I had “Casual At Home” proposals, and “Significant Neighborhood Spots” proposals, “Out of Town” proposals. I mean, the list goes on.
SPELL OUT ALL MY PLANS
There was a couple weeks when I would tell Mr. Lobster every plan I made *just* in case he wanted to make plans with me instead. And every time he said “Cool, have fun.” Have fun? Have fun?? How can I have fun when he’s supposed to be romantically proposing to me?!?!
THINK LIKE A MAN
There was one option I had considered (but didn’t explore): RANSACK THE ENTIRE APARTMENT. I just wanted some confirmation of whether it was going to happen soon. I thought about the places Mr. Lobster could hide the ring and there were only 2 safe-ish ones: his closet and his dresser. I should note that the “dresser” is one of those stackable CLEAR plastic ones from Bed Bath & Beyond. Anything hidden in it could be seen easily.
After a couple proposal-less weekends, I decided we were going to get a dog, so I planned a trip to a local animal shelter here in Long Island, New York, a train ride away. If I’m not going to get proposed to then at least I could get a cute puppy.
We came up zero on the puppy front. Sad faced, we caught the train back home. It wasn’t until the return trip on the train that I realized Mr. Lobster was acting mighty funny. Here’s what tipped me off:
As we walked back to our apartment, Mr. Lobster suggested we do something fun since I was sad about not getting a puppy. He grabbed my hand and started waving cabs down. I had a big smile and asked, “Where are we going?!?!”
Mr. Lobster: “You’ll see”
Then it got awkward in the cab. We both sat there far away from each other in silence. We both knew something what was coming but he didn’t know that I knew. We arrived at the downtown heliport.
My brain was on overdrive. OMG, is he going to propose on a helicopter? Is the pilot going to hear it? There was a metal detector. I thought, ‘what if it goes off or doesn’t go off? If it goes off, then the jig is up. If it doesn’t, then I might be sad.’
It didn’t go off. (Don’t worry, ladies, this is a proposal story and there will be a ring. It turns out that platinum does NOT set off metal detectors.)
It was a group helicopter tour of Manhattan. I breathed a sigh of relief knowing he wouldn’t propose in front of tourists squished into a tiny heli.
In our helicopter tour. View of Manhattan.
After the ride, he pulled my hand and said, “Let’s walk home.” On such a balmy day, we’d normally jump into a cab. But I played along. We walked along the water and he asked to stop at his favorite pier to “rest.” This was it. I could feel it.
As we looked out onto the water, he told me he loved me and was happy we were living together now. Then he stood up and said, “My phone is bothering me,” so he was shifting stuff around in his pockets. Then he said, “Oh are there seats up there?” and pointed up behind us. I turned to look, just to indulge him.
When I turned back around, there he was, on one knee, holding the ring out to me. And that’s when he said it:
“Will you marry me?”
Even though I knew this was coming, I immediately started to tear up. I don’t remember if I said anything. He reached out to put it on my hand but didn’t know which hand it went on, which made me chuckle. That was my lobster.
Our first pic as an engaged couple, me teary-eyed from happiness
By the way, the ring was in the clear plastic drawer the whole time! I would never have guessed.
Were you surprised by your proposal or did you have a hunch?
