About Mrs. Lobster

I totally heart shopping. So when it was time to shop for wedding dresses, I was super psyched!! I spent months researching, and fantasy me started with Carrie Bradshaw in mind.

Of course, I am not a fabulous character in Sex and the City and I do not have Vivienne Westwood connections. Regardless, I crushed on many dresses and dated many styles before finding the right one. Here are some of my favorite flings:

Lace Sheaths. Classic and classy.

I loved how this one had a lace overlay feeling but wasn’t traditional or delicate.

Dramatic Ball gowns. There’s nothing wrong with a little fashion drama for the wedding day.

I’m totally crushing on the rosettes! Some of you will think this looks like a bad 1st grade tissue paper project. To each her own!

Mermaid/Fit and Flare/Trumpet (what is the official name of this style anyway?)

Beautiful satin mermaid with subtle ruching.

I’m not sure if you can see the detail in the fabric but it’s got a scalloped chiffony look!

A tulle mermaid dress, which is unusual. This one was on the runway but apparently never made it into production.

Living in New York City, I have the benefit of access to all of the designers’ boutiques as well as the bridal superstore featured on TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress, Kleinfeld Bridal. I decided to check out some of the boutiques as well as Kleinfeld’s for that full bridal experience. Let the shopping begin!

Were you excited to shop for your wedding dress? Did you know what style you wanted or did you love them all?

I went in knowing I wanted something with interesting details, something eye-catching. The first dress I ever looked at up close online, before I was even engaged, ended up being the one I stuck with! But I looked around just in case, to make sure I loved the dress as much as I thought I did. I tried on a lot of highly decorated sheaths a la Claire Pettibone before realizing they were too informal for my wedding. I kept looking, and was definitely a dramatic ballgown type of girl. I LOVED Monique Lhullier’s Lyric like you posted above, but ultimately it just didn’t top my first pick! Great post, so many swoon-worthy dresses. And yay Kleinfeld! I had a great time there and it’s where my dress is from.

Also, my mom knows Vivienne Westwood (I couldn’t believe it when she told me, she didn’t even realize how important she was when they first met because it was totally outside of a fashion industry context!), but alas her designs just really aren’t my style. Wish I could pass my connection on to you!

Miss Lobster, if you haven’t started shopping yet, I had the BEST experience at a place in NYC. . .

I don’t mean to be presumptuous about your budget, but since most of us are watching it, I thought I would share this gem with you. I saved a ton of money by going to The Bridal Garden. It’s on W21st between 5th and 6th (you would never know it was there unless you knew the address and suite#). It’s a non-profit salon that sells designer samples. You have to be careful because some of the dresses are in rough shape, but I happened to land a **new** gown in perfect shape for half the boutique price! The proceeds go to the Brooklyn Charter School, making it a win win! =)

My plan B was the NYC favorite: Sample Sales!!

Good luck! The styles you are **dating** are beautiful!!!

I just love the dresses you put on here! I had the best time shopping for my dress! I knew what I wanted but I went in with an open mind and tried ALL styles on. The one I choose was the first one I had tried on and actually tried it on months earlier when picking up my bridesmaid dress for a friends wedding and we were “just having fun”. Enjoy your shopping day!!

I started dress shopping with absolutely no idea what I liked in a dress. I went to about 4 stores before I started picking out what I liked and didn’t like. I’m jealous of your accessibility to so many designers and bridal salons!! Can’t wait to see your dress!

nice! and fyi - the mermaid/fit and flare/trumpet dresses are all similar styles but are different actually they vary in tightness and where they start to go out from the body - the tightest and lowest “flare” starts with mermaid, then trumpet then fit and flare - it also goes as far as a “modified” fit and flare which is a cross between Aline and fit and flare :)

i only know this because my dress is a modified fit and flare :)

I love the 2nd and 3rd dresses you posted, gorgeous! I have no idea what I want in a dress. I probably would’ve gone for a strapless ball gown type of dress.. had I not already done that for prom lol. Now I think I just want something that isn’t too heavy!

Hey, you referred to the second two dresses as one dress, but they’re actually different. I know b/c the one on the right is my dress ;)

I knew I needed something fitted (I’m petite), so a ballgown was out of the question. Plus, I’m not a fan of ballgowns (on me).

I knew before I went shopping, It was a 1950’s style tea length, and I was right. I found my perfect dress after trying on so many and then it was a too small sample. I spent weeks on the phone calling every shop in the states and finally found it 10 minutes from my mom’s house in MN. I love and adore my dress!!!

@MJogan: I have been to Bridal Garden! My friend bought her dress there and it was a really nice dress for much less price. I agree also that the charity part is a win win
@spaganya: THANK YOU. Your explanation makes so much sense and I’m glad you shared it with us
@moderndaisy: You’re right that is *not* the same dress, I posted the wrong pic. But your dress…loooove!!! I love the beaded flower “lace”

I went to Kleinfeld and I found my dress there. My consultant was nice, though I forgot her name already hahah. Though a tip for you, buy the dress in NJ. I did so and ended up saving myself $1200. No joke!
