I love reading historical biographies, multi-tasking, teasing my hair, and, despite my height, wearing high heeled shoes. I am the ultimate klutz with an uncanny ability to put on a graceful front. Mr. Pudding and I have been dating for over six years, and are very excited to finally merge our (very large) families. We are planning a traditional Polish-Catholic wedding that is anything but predictable.

Gossip Girl, I Am Not

April 15th, 2010 @ 7:19 pm by Mrs. Pudding

Confession: I am a 27 year old woman who enjoys watching shows about trendy high school kids, and Gossip Girl is one of my favorites. Blair is absolutely my fashion icon, and I am strangely attracted to the naughtiness that is Chuck Bass.

This week’s episode was particularly exciting for me. Why? I’ll give you two words: Polish Wedding.

That’s right, the very Polish Dorota got married this week, and I had big hopes for her wedding. Because she kept talking about how incorporating tradition into the ceremony was very important to ensure a successful union, I thought that I was in for a slight glimpse into our own wedding: a modern North American affair, with a mix of “the old country”.

Unfortunately, Dorota’s wedding was quite disappointing.

There wasn’t a single tradition that I recognized, and the ceremony didn’t even take place in a church. This is highly unlikely for a Polish wedding, considering that 95% of people living in Poland are Catholics. I feel like the writers of the show couldn’t be bothered to do even the minimal amount of research to ensure that the wedding at least resembled something that could be called “traditional”.

To the show’s credit, Dorota’s fiance is Russian, so maybe some of the customs they showed were from the Russian tradition. I also loved how they featured “I got a Feeling” by the Black Eyed Peas played on the accordion.

Do you watch Gossip Girl? What did you think of Dorota’s wedding?

P.S. You can watch the episode here.

Oh no! bummer. I do watch Gossip Girl from time to time- sometimes more obsessively than others… but what a let down that they didn’t highlight Dorota’s culture more! I’ll have to watch it.

I don’t watch the show, was her grandma pressuring her to find a nice Polish/catholic boy like mine used to?

I thought about having an accordion. I see in your about me that you live in Vermont too! I am in love with the one accordion player that frequents Church St in Burlington!

I watch Gossip Girl, and I’m marrying into a Polish family (My FI is 3rd generation american, but we live in an extremely Polish neighborhood, and we’re getting married in a Polish Catholic church) and I was also disappointed in her wedding. We’re not including many Polish customs, but I was excited to see what customs she would include.

I love Gossip Girl! And I loved the accordion Black Eyed Peas song! But yeah, you’re right–their wedding really wasn’t very traditional!

Yes! I watched this episode was like “OMG Miss Pudding!” Sad that they didn’t really feature any actual traditions.. I found it hard to believe that the balloon dance game was really an ancient custom..

Gossip Girl is my at the gym only guilty pleasure, so I have to wait till my elliptical time tomorrow to watch the end of this episode… I love a good Gossip Girl wedding! I actually found part of the ring vows that my fiance and I want to use from Eleanor’s wedding last season.

I don’t watch it but I should! Someone I went to HS with is on that show, I don’t think an every episode character but a repeating role.

I was wondering whether the lack of Church ceremony accurately reflected the fact that the Church would NEVER have allowed them to arrange a ceremony overnight, given all the various hoops they have for couples to navigate. And then I realized I am thinking too much about this show! But I love it!

I haven’t seen this week’s episode yet but Blair is totally my fashion icon. I once brought a photo of her into the hair dresser when I got highlights, and I’m sort of considering bring in a photo for my makeup trial. But then I worry, do I want to look like a high school girl at my wedding?

I generally don’t admit this, but I too am a twenty something obsessed with Gossip Girl. I also have a large crush on Chuck Bass. I agree with you on the wedding scene. I also imagine that several of the “traditions” they did incorporate were actually made to fit the plot line and not real traditions. I have to think that both characters have fake accents anyway which has always bothered me.

@Alicia: I totally hear you on the husband’s accent - he’s definitely not Russian. But the actress that plays Dorota is Polish - she actually speaks Polish on the show sometimes, and I can tell by her accent that she is probably American born/raised, but with Polish immigrant parents.

Actually, under 90% of Poland is Roman Catholic, according to the CIA world factbook. Where are you getting the 95% number?

https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/pl.html

And since only about 60% of Poles are religiously observant, it doesn’t seem unlikely that a wedding would be held somewhere other than a church. I know that in the Polish neighborhoods of Pittsburgh, PA, it was common for weddings to be held outside churches.

@Wehaf: Sorry; I meant that only about 60% of Roman Catholics are very observant (i.e. attend weekly mass). See http://cara.georgetown.edu/bulletin/international.htm

I was just reading about Polish Wedding Traditions. Apparently, it was expected that the bride would cry during the ceremony. If she didn’t, then she would be destined to cry throughout her married life!
