Mrs. Sewing, San Mateo, CA/Honolulu, HI Age and Occupation: 24, Electrical Engineer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Electrical Engineer Engagement Date: June 27, 2009 Wedding Date: July 2010 Venue: Anela Garden Chapel & Japanese Cultural Center, Honolulu About Me: I'm an easily entertained, compulsive idea-scheming machine who loves good art, good food, and a good engineering challenge. I'm planning a half-destination wedding on the beautiful island of Oahu - imagine a plethora of movies, art and games; savory Hawaiian food; blended Chinese and Japanese cultural details; lush, fragrant tropical flowers and all the air conditioning a NorCal native could want! And once I marry the love of my life, we'll come back to the 'mainland' to party it up all over again in my hometown of Salinas, the salad-bowl capital of the world!

Proper Packaging

April 15th, 2010 @ 4:53 pm by Mrs. Sewing

Problem: What do I use to put our out-of-town goodies in?

Parameters:

  • Needs to be big enough for a couple of water bottles, paper, snacks, etc.
  • Needs to be able to flatten for easy transportation to Hawaii.

We could do boxes:

This would probably be easiest, but they are somewhat single-purpose. A bag, at least, could be easily reused.

How about pretty Hawaiian tote bags:

I’m a big-bag-fanatic, but we are already giving our guests chair-cover-bags… so would this be bag-overkill?

Maybe a meshy beach bag, instead. Or maybe a fancy looking parcel wrap, tied up with strings:

It’s bound to be someone’s favorite thing. Right? Though I don’t know how I’d wrap something like a water bottle. That would probably have to sit to the side.

Or maybe we should just go with a towel rolled up with stuff:

Yeah, I know what you’re thinking - diaper cake. We can call this the beach-cake, with no babies involved!

Do you have any other ideas? I plan to take the packaging materials over to Hawaii with me, then fill it all up with local goodies before the wedding - hopefully before all of our guests show up!

If you made out-of-town favors, what did you put your guests’ goodies in?

I went with beach bags but I think you maybe right, that could be bag overkill. Although the flowered bags are SOOOOO cute.
I vote for the gable boxes. :-)

How about plastic sand pails? You can probably buy them there.

Or, Trader Joes always has cute reusable shopping totes that have fun designs on them. They are not too expensive, fold flat to ship, and are eco-friendly!

Love the towel, too! I didn’t think diaper cake–I thought cruise line towels on your bed in the morning. :-D

I love the hibiscus totes! A lot of people don’t think of bringing along a tote for the beach or pool, so that would be perfect. Plus, your guests would get it right away when they get there. Since the other bags are not until the wedding, I really don’t think you’ll have “bag overkill” as you think you may have. One other option (also from Oriental Trading) might be the drawstring backpacks that are available in all different colors. They even have (as a fun option) canvas backpacks that have a tropical theme to color (any kids coming?).

I got 8″ X 4-3/4″ X 10-1/4″ Kraft paper bags and tissue paper from http://www.papermart.com/ and large circle stickers from Paper-Source. Printed a little welcome message on the stickers and stuck one on each bag. I haven’t assembled everything yet, but I think they will work great! Best of all, the bags fold flat enough so that it’s easy to travel with them and assemble when you get to the wedding site.

the beach cake sounds like a great idea but if you are only doing 1 per room then not everyone will get a towel. so that may be a huge price factor.

I like the towel probably the best, but vttp926 brings up the point that it might get expensive. The Trader Joe’s bags are already floral/hawaiian and will be reusable. I don’t think it’ll be too many bags for guests.

The beach cake is awesome, but might be difficult to make on a fly and can be time consuming? I LOVE the Hawaiian bags, but I’m biased towards anything Hawaiian themed (just ask my FI! Yikes!)

Those are the exact hibiscus totes I have picked out from oriental trading! One caveat, they said (reviewers) if you use them they come w/an unusual smell, and to run them in the dryer on low with some dryer sheets to get rid of it.

They’re super cute and I’m putting white embossed tags I’ve made and tying them to the tote w/raffia ribbon!

I really like the towel idea! And it wouldn’t look diaper-cakeish if you used non-white towels!

We will more than likely use reusable grocery bags!

We’re doing totes, but obviously not giving bags/chair covers, too. I agree with @Vegas Mom that your guests will definitely use the bags before the wedding. I don’t think it’s overkill at all!

in my opinion you can’t have enough reusable bags, so my vote is for the tote! i also have no imagination, so i’m sure there are other good ideas out there.

I am a fan of the parcel paper wrapped in twine - so cute! And it’s like getting a present or package - everyone likes opening presents! You do have a lot of cute options though.

Aww..i love the brown paper packages tied up with string. These are certainly one of my fav-o-rite things ;) (Believe it or not, i’ve never seen the Sound of Music. I do love that song though)

a plastic bucket? i bet you can get them cheaply in hawaii.

also, the diaper cake is cool, but i’ve seen a twoel set cake for a wedding shower and it’s so cute! 3 layers=bath towels for the bottom layer, hand towels for middle and washcloths for the top.

I love the totes! Also love that diaper-looking towel contraption! Very useful.
