Wedding Cake: Take Two

Wedding timeline lists seriously make me feel ill. Yes, I know that they are created in order to give structure and organization to the wedding planning process (which I can appreciate), but whenever I deviate from the timeline I start to feel like I’m going to break out into hives!

However, I am here to tell you all that it is not impossible to make plans/schedule vendors at times that differ from the given timeline! Yes - you can do it! Case in point: our wedding cake. According to most wedding planning timelines, you should have your cake baker booked at around the 6 month mark. Oh hmm… yes… it is April now, the wedding is only a month and a half away, and we are JUST NOW booking our cake. Yeah, before you revoke my bride card, hear me out!

The first reason as to why I’m so behind: I was living in Virginia! That REALLY put the brakes on the wedding cake tasting. It is just really difficult to taste wedding cakes when you don’t live in the same state as the bakeries! Mr. Buttons and I tried out Publix cake when we were home for Thanksgiving, but we weren’t ready to sign the contract after that experience.

Well, we moved back to Florida, and for a few weeks I was on a mission to complete unfinished tasks, which included the cake! Mr. Buttons and I went to a very nice bakery in town that is known for amazing cakes. We tasted them, and we were impressed. However, when we started to talk to the baker herself, we were less than thrilled. After sifting through hundreds of cake photos, I had pulled one (yes… one) picture as my inspiration. It was everything that I wanted:

When the baker asked me about what I wanted in regards to the design, I proceeded to show her the photo. I also mentioned how I was looking for something very simple. She looked at the photo, then looked back at me and oh so bluntly said, “that design is NOT simple.” Mmmmmok… well perhaps I didn’t quite phrase it right? Yes, I realized that the work involved might be detailed, but the look of the cake itself is not what I would consider elaborate. Regardless of whether or not she understood what I was originally saying, I was put off by the encounter.

After that particular meeting, I was feeling a bit dejected and frustrated about the cake situation. So… I put it off… until last week, when I found the best cake baker EVER! But, you’ll have to wait, as that story is for another time!

How many different cake bakeries did you try out before you found the one? Did anyone turn down your ideas or vision?

Can’t wait to hear about the good baker! How rude of the other one to be so blunt, don’t they know the customer is always right? And I love the detail on your inspiration cake, by the way!

Not to side with the baker, but I wouldn’t describe that cake as “simple” either. It IS beautiful though!!

That cake looks beautiful :) I totally understand what you mean that it’s simple due to the delicate piping—soo pretty! I also understand that it’s probably not simple for the baker since it is delicate and whatnot but she should have NEVER said what she did, insane woman. Looking forward to reading about the new baker and I’m glad you found your gal/guy.

I think the baker was just viewing it from the point of the all the time it would take to pipe on the icing designs, but she did not handle it the right way. That inspiration pick is dreamy!!! It just fits in with your “birds and baby’s breath” look you are going for.

@Curlysue: @ktisthatbees: Yes, exactly! Although I totally understand that the design I want would take a lot of work, I was trying to explain that I didn’t want some sort of gaudy design…which I did happen to see a lot of in their photo books. That particular bakery makes a lot of extravagant looking cakes…I just wanted to make sure she understood I was wanting something more…subdued! ;)

I definitely would not describe that design as simple, but I love it! It is so intricate an pretty.

Nobody ever shot me down, but one baker did tell me that she could do a henna-design cake, then proceeded to draw a scrambling of amoebas. We didn’t hire her. :)

Beautiful cake. :) I’m glad you found somebody that could do what you wanted.

We were lazy and just are using the caterer. His wife is a baker/has a bakery, so it was convenient.

The lace is intricite and prob not so easy to do… however I think what makes the cake seem ’simple’ is the neutral color palette and it’s not cluttered… it’s streamlined :)
Also, she is not just a baker she’s a saleperson so she needs to improve her customer service. Congratulations on finding a baker!!

We met with a bakery way early in our engagement and was totally blown off - head chef was totally rude and thought we were just trying to get free cake! They kept telling us to come back in 6-8 months when we were really serious! Its probably good you saved this task!

Oh god - we ate so much cake I almost went into sugar shock. In about a week, we had 4 different tastings. Then a week later, we went back to one of the bakers for one last tasting. I didn’t want to even look at wedding cakes for about a month after that!

Sadly no tastings for us since my friend is making the cake for our home party - although I did tell her I’d be happy to eat her trial run!

I’m so excited you found your baker!

I had a few bakers in mind, but we went and did a tasting at one, and booked them on the spot!
