About Mrs. Dolphin

I can’t believe that I have been blogging for this long and haven’t blogged about Mr. Dolphin’s proposal. Just to be clear, before Mr. Dolphin proposed, we had talked about getting married. So, it wasn’t an absolute surprise—which I believe engagements shouldn’t ever really be. Before getting engaged, we talked about what we wanted for our future… how many kids (he wants 3… I want a soccer team), where we wanted to live, what we wanted to do with our lives, etc… I mean… we had a lot of time to talk about this. Mr. Dolphin and I had been dating for 5 years before we got engaged!

But first… a little history

Mr. Dolphin and I in middle school band
Please ignore the big hair… everyone has an awkward stage… most people don’t broadcast it on the internet but I love you all too much to keep this baby hidden :)

We started dating in our junior year of high school but have known each other since 3rd grade.

While our first attractions for each other started in middle school, we didn’t acknowledge our deep-rooted love until high school. Within the first month of dating, Mr. Dolphin had already asked me to marry him… and he kept asking just about everyday up to our actual engagement. What can I say… Mr. Dolphin was smitten (and so was I!).

Mr. Dolphin and I all dressed up for our Junior Prom

Although we wanted to get hitched right away, we knew we needed to wait until we were both out of college. It was (and is) the logical thing to do (for us), but certainly not what our hearts were telling us.

The Proposal

Mr. Dolphin proposed on February 14, 2008: Valentine’s Day. I know… kinda cheesy; but, I absolutely loved it! Mr. Dolphin didn’t propose in a packed restaurant, or on stage in front of a crowd of our friends and family. He didn’t propose on a JumboTron at a UF football game, or at Gator Growl on the field… he did it exactly as I would have wanted it… in the privacy of our home. :)

We had just come back after having dinner at one of my favorite Italian restaurants. I was sitting on the couch and he was sitting on the floor with his head in my lap. He was kind of fumbling around with something in his pocket and then he just looked at me. At that moment, I sort of knew what was happening and it all hit me at once. I started to get kind of jittery and my whole body felt hot all of a sudden. When he started this super sweet speech, professing his love for me, I started to get teary eyed (yes… I’m a crier). Mr. Dolphin asked me to marry him and (hello… you all should know this) I said YES!

Oh! Look how my ring sparkles! Gorgeousness!
*and yes… that is a Pirate boat behind us… don’t ask

The Ring

What made this proposal different then all the other times he proposed to me? He had an amazing ring in his hands!

This beauty was/is so sparkly, my camera has trouble focusing on all of it’s awesome-ness!

Okay… I have to confess… I knew about the ring before the proposal.

Oh the HORROR (*cue horror movie screams). Before everyone gets their panties in a twist over me knowing about the ring, you have to give Mr. Dolphin some props. He knows that I am a picky person, I like things a certain way. He wanted to make sure he gave me a ring I absolutely LOVED, because… face it… I would be wearing it for the rest of my life—I’d better love it.

We actually found the ring by accident. Mr. Dolphin had been taking me into jewelry stores for months leading up to our engagement. I tried on countless rings—all the while becoming (a wee bit) upset over not finding any I liked. We then went into Shane Co near the Mall at Millenia in Orlando (it has since moved :( ). At Shane Co, you choose your setting and then choose the diamond to be set within it. They had cases and cases of beautiful settings and a gorgeous wall filled with diamonds (in little plush coves).

When we came across a setting that I absolutely loved (and that was within our price point), Mr. Dolphin immediately put down a deposit. The sales associate had to practically pry the ring off my finger (soo… Mr. Dolphin knew it was a keeper!).

While I knew he had purchased the ring, I didn’t know when he would actually propose. It was always a guessing game through the month and a half he had the ring. Anytime he was being extra sweet, I would think he was about to propose. I think he was just trying to fool me most of the time. As his family, friends, and my old college dorm mate (and, now, bridesmaid) know, Mr. Dolphin can be quite the prankster!

So, we’re down to about 1 month until our big day. Our 2 year engagement has been like a black hole—I have no idea where the time has gone. My parents always told me that time flies by as you get older, and boy do I believe it!

Did you help your future husband-to-be pick out the ring? Or was the proposal a complete surprise?

I picked out the ring. I convinced him that I was doing him a huge favor, and since he is the kind of guy who hems and haws for ages over a large purchase (Seriously he’s been “researching” a car to buy for over NINE months now, even though his broke down a month ago, and mine badly needs a major repair) I knew I needed to kick things into gear (ok, push and prod) if I wanted it anytime soon! I think a LOT more women are picking out the ring these days (maybe we’re just getting extra pushy, or men are realizing that we SHOULD have a hand in choosing a piece of jewelry we will hopefully wear the rest of our lives). Even though I picked out the ring, and knew the proposal was coming, it was still a wonderful surprise with how/when he did it. I think this trend will continue & grow. CONGRATS from one May 2010 bride to another! You two are SO CUTE!

My guy and i had talked about getting engaged and all that right when we started dating. He picked out the ring all on his own. He bought it at an estate sale, its a vintage 1957 custom made ring. its about 1 ct total weight and it kinda looks like a flower but it is really breathtaking. I always kinda wanted just a normal solitaire ring or a 3 stone or something. but this ring is totally me. and he picked it out on his own which surprised me. He had it for 5 months before he proposed. and i knew it was there. i saw the box. and the suspense was killer. But one day on a snow day in mississippi (one of very few) he convinced me to play in the snow, and he had set up speakers in my back yard, and when we got back there he played god only knows by the beach boys and we slow dances under a tree in the snow! i really thought he was just being cute, but then he got down on one knee and asked! i of course started crying and said yes :) my guy did everything on his own and totally surprised me :)

I was totally involved in picking out the look of my ring with the colored side stones and etched band and stuff but my FI did choose the setting himself. Initially he wanted to pick it out all on his own and haha there’s no way I was okay with that just because I am pretty particular on what I wear.

Your ring is gorgeous and I’ve seen it before—my mom has the same ring!! She got married five years ago and they got her ring at Shane Co too :) Her husband actually proposed and then they went to pick out the ring together and that’s what she picked. I remember when she walked in the house, I could see it sparkle from the door! Awesome choice Miss Dolphin :) Very beautiful!

Mr R had me choose 3 rings I loved. He made his choice from those 3. Or course because he knows me, he picked my favorite one. Your ring is sooo sparkly! I love it! What girl doesn’t like sparkles, eh?

I picked out my ring, too! Mr. FF felt like how Mr. Dolphin did: he knows I’m picky, and he wanted me to love it! Beautiful ring!

I love hearing about other’s engagement stories! My FI told me that he would take me to pick out a ring because it’s way too important of a purchase to make (both the cost of it and the fact I’ll be wearing it for the rest of my life). We were on vacation in St Thomas when he decided to take me ring shopping so that was a big shocker to me! 5 months later he proposed and the waiting was killing me! When he proposed I got the same “feeling hot” sensation when I realized it was happening!

What a great story :). My fiance and I got engaged at home also (which we had just purchased the month prior), and it was perfect! It was very special since it was at our new house (which he currently lives at and I won’t be moving in until the wedding… trying to keep it traditional but kind of frustrating!). He also insisted on picking out my ring himself, which at first made me a little nervous until I realized I had no idea what I wanted. He did a great job though!

For some reason, I hadn’t realized how similar our stories are! Love it! (And totally agreed on how a two year engagement is like a black hole in time… seriously, crazy how it flies!)

My SO knows how particular I am with my style, so we definitely made a joint decision on which ring style i liked. Now that I have given my official opinion, I have to sit around and patiently (actually not patient AT ALL) wait for him to ask. Sigh. . . .
