About Mrs. Octopus

Hotel Block: FAIL

April 16th, 2010 @ 8:45 am by Mrs. Octopus

Once we locked down Heinz Chapel as our ceremony site, I assumed that we would create our block of hotel rooms at the Holiday Inn directly across the street.

Hotel Block: FAIL : wedding accommodations pittsburgh Oakland

See that awesome location? It’s less than a five-minute walk to Heinz Chapel! Also, it’s a very, very easy walk to many great attractions in the lively Oakland/University of Pittsburgh area, including the University’s main building, the Cathedral of Learning, the super-awesome Carnegie Museums of Art and History, and lots of great, busy bars and restaurants, including the Holy Grail of Pittsburgh foods, Primanti Brothers’ sandwiches:

Hotel Block: FAIL : wedding accommodations pittsburgh Primant

Fluffy Italian bread, tomatoes, cole slaw, grilled deli meat, melty provolone cheese, and a big handful of FRENCH FRIES. I get mine with roast beef and nix the tomatoes and slaw for optimal artery destruction. I have literally dreamt of these. (Source)

Earlier this week, I called the Holiday Inn to inquire about blocking off our rooms (a month ahead of schedule, according to my wedding planning book, no less!), only to discover that the Society for Botanical Artists (?!?!?!) is having a convention in Oakland that week (?!?!?!?) and already scored all the rooms. Mental reaction: “*#!%&!!!”

So, okay, I am a resilient bride. I rebounded, and decided to go instead for the Marriott very close to our reception site, the Children’s Museum, which is about fifteen minutes away from Oakland. The overall neighborhood is not quite as fun and easy to navigate as Oakland, but it’s still cool. It provides easy access to the Warhol Museum, a few bars, the Carnegie Science Center, and Pittsburgh’s two major sports venues, PNC Park (home of the Pirates) and Heinz Field (home of the Steelers).

Hotel Block: FAIL : wedding accommodations pittsburgh Northsi

I was really optimistic about this choice, and then I spoke to the sales person on the phone. Surpriiiiiise! Given that the hotel provides immediate access to Heinz Field—home of the Steelers—and our wedding is in late September—the opening of football season—they will not reserve a block of rooms for us until after the Steelers’ schedule for 2010 is released. In April. Five months before the wedding. And if there is indeed a home game that weekend, not only will they not provide a discounted rate to our guests, they will in fact jack the rates up so high our guests’ noses will bleed. Mental reaction: “*#!%&!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

All is not lost—these aren’t the only two hotels in Pittsburgh, obviously. But they ARE the only two hotels that are in such easy, convenient locations to either the ceremony site or the reception site, and also provide a nice surrounding atmosphere for guests to partake in if they so choose. Other hotels in Oakland are a rather annoying distance (as in, not at all walking distance) away from Heinz Chapel, and definitely not in the midst of the fun of the University neighborhood. There aren’t really any other hotels on the North Shore, where the reception is. The next closest one is in another whole neighborhood, over a bridge.

So now I’m not sure what to do. What would you do? Suck it up and wait for the Steelers’ spring schedule and keep fingers crossed we can score the best hotel, or book something that’s not in a convenient location to either place? Maybe find out the cancellation policies on the less-desirable hotels? Any Pittsburgh brides out there? I’d love some other suggestions!

That’s a bummer. Don’t you hate when you think you are doing the right thing by trying to book earlier only to find out things that are not in your control got in your way?? My venue has hotels pretty close, but they are not the nicest hotels. We opted for nicer hotels but they are not in walking distance. To help out our guests we have rented trolleys that are also handicap accesible for those who are older. I know it’s not ideal but you could always rents some form of transportation: trolley, school bus, passenger van, etc. You also might as well wait for the the steeler’s schedule to come out and decide from there. There is no use changing your plans only to find out in a month or so that the steelers are away that weekend. I hope that things work out for you with this!! I’m sure you’ll keep us posted!!

Working on the North Shore of Pittsburgh directly across from PNC Park i would say the Renaissance Pittsburgh just across the bridge would work perfectly!

Our photographer came out from Allentown for a weekend (to do engagement shots) and that’s where we put her up.

Great rates, and amazing views of the city and you are just seconds from downtown life, the strip or the bars here on the north shore… Not to mention the walk across the bridge at night is stunning!

Just a thought, hopefully it helps.

The whole Steelers schedule thing makes me SO mad. We tried to block rooms at a certain hotel, but they could only offer us a ridiculously high rate and not very many rooms. The reason? Well the Cavs *might* have a playoff game that weekend. WHAT?! Mind you, this was in December, nearly 6 months before my wedding and a good 4 months before the START of playoffs. Grrr this still makes me so upset. So I feel you on what the Marriott did to you. It’s not fair at all.

You could always pick a hotel that’s a bit less convenient and then provide a shuttle for your guests. That’s what we’re doing and I think it’s going to work out really well. Good luck with hotel blocking, hun. It will all work out in the end, but getting there might suck.

we also had a hotel block fail- we are getting married in chicago proper (and lemme tell you, hotels her are NEVER affordable!), and there is a huge oncology conference in the city the weekend of our wedding. none of the mid-grade hotels (marriot, springhill suites, etc) hotels would give us a block at all, so we ended up getting a small block for family at a fancy hotel and crossing our fingers for our guests. bitchy, i know… but the fancy hotel is going to make us pay for any rooms we dont use, and when we booked the block, people were reeling when we said $220 a night. Now rooms at the Comfort Inn are over $500 a night!

You should block rooms at other hotels (the Renaissance Pittsburgh mentioned by jdinks sounds nice) now as too not loose other options, but still try for the Marriott when the time comes. The nice thing about blocking rooms is they don’t have to be used. They will release rooms that aren’t booked like a week or two before the date. Or cancel your blocked rooms at the less desirable hotel after you succeed at the Marriott.

Getting married in Atlanta…my wedding planner had us book rooms a full 10 months in advance…It was the 3rd item on the to do list…I questioned her schedule at first, but after reading this, now I understand why!

What about the Wyndham in Oakland? It’s an easy, straight walk down Forbes to the ceremony site and it’s a really nice hotel.

Anything downtown would also work great, but I worry that most of the hotels near the stadium’s will have similar policies about waiting for the football schedule, since they’re all usually full on those weekends.

I’m going to a wedding at Heinz Chapel in a few weeks and I can’t wait! My husband and I are also Pitt alums and also met while in college!

OK. So I am getting married IN Pittsburgh in May…and the Women’s National Volleyball League is having their convention that same weekend! Quite a struggle and I totally understand…that said: So many of the Pittsburgh hotels can be REALLY helpful. We are using the Westin Downtown….which is not too far from either, have a daily parking fee that allows guests to come and go as they please and also has a shuttle to “main” attractions like the Children’s Museum and Oakland…So????? I am wondering could you call them and ask if guests could use this shuttle to get around for your day?…email me directly on here if you want them name of my contact their. he is very nice and REALLLY helpful!

What about the Wyndam or even Hampton Inn? I went to CMU and walked from further than that to campus (hell, I walked from the Southside to campus across the Brimingham Bridge more than a few times…).

I would try to find another hotel as a Plan B and then wait and find out the Steelers schedule and then if it works out, block that hotel as well. There’s nothing wrong with having 2 hotel blocks.

Ergh, that’s SO annoying! On a side note, I’ve seen those Pimanti Bro’s sandwhiches featured on a show on the Travel Channel and I must have one! They look soo good!

What about the Wyndham? We are getting married at the Carnegie Museum and have rooms booked at the Holiday Inn as the main hotel (since its closer to the museum) & another block at the Wyndham, if necessary. My parents were in touch with Brandi, the Convention Services Manager at the Wyndham: Brandi.DeMarchi@ArchonHospitality.com Good luck and Go Steelers!!

That’s crazy that they will jack up the prices!

I agree about the Wyndam… It’s not that far away and might actually be easier for guests to find as it’s right on Forbes. Plus the walk to the cathedral isn’t that far. Although if you’re serving alcohol at the reception, having one downtown might be a better option as it’s walking distance from the museum. Did you look into the Priory on the northside?

What about the Sheraton at Station Square? Thats definitely not a bad idea and there are tons of places to go out in that area. I also agree with the Renaissance, but there isnt as much to do in that area. South Side is a good option too with the Holiday Inn Express. Cheap rooms, but public trans (i.e. cabs in the burgh suck!)

Like ChiDIY I’m getting married in downtown Chicago, and there’s some other convention that’s blocked out a bunch of rooms - literally if you go to their website, it’s listed as sold out. BUT they gave me a block because we’re having our reception there. Basically they told me they hold a giant block for big conventions like that, but they know the group will never use all of them. So maybe you could talk to the Holiday Inn and see if you hold an event there (rehersal dinner? morning after brunch?) if they could give you a block of rooms.

Oh no! What a pain. Maybe the Holiday Inn botanical people won’t completely book up? Keep checking back.

My wedding is the week before your’s (I think) and they let me block rooms at the Marriott City Center in Feb. before the Steeler schedule came out. But I am totally praying that there isn’t a game on my weekend. And I made a note on my wedding website that people should book their rooms before the schedule comes out, as it will not be my fault if they have to pay $500 a night for a room.
