About Mrs. Octopus

The Secret Underneath My Dress

April 17th, 2010 @ 11:25 am by Mrs. Octopus

Everyone, please don’t take my girly-girl membership card away for the admission I’m about to make, but—I am not a shoe girl. I can appreciate the aesthetics of a really beautiful pair, but I don’t know, they just aren’t my first (or second, or third, or fourth) passion, as far as indulgences go. My lukewarm feelings toward shoes may also have something to do with the fact that I am absolutely incapable of walking prettily in a steep pair of heels. No kidding, I strap on anything over 3 inches—okay, let’s get real, 2.5 inches—and I’m lurching and staggering around like the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Not. Cute.

So, my total klutzhood is one main reason why I will not be sporting anything along these adorable lines on my wedding day:

The other reason is one of height. I’m five foot seven, and Mr. Octopus is juuuuust about five foot ten. (Psssst. He’s totally five nine. Don’t tell him I told you.) I like looking shorter than him, especially in pictures. And if I want a substantial height difference, then my shoes need to be as low to the ground as possible.

I’ve found a few cute options—these two stuck out at me as possible contenders:

But can I be totally honest here? What I really, really, really want to wear under my wedding dress are these:

Oh yes I did go there. Twenty-five dollar rubber flip flops from J. Crew. Listen, I wear flip flops aaaaall the tiiiiiime. I wear them nearly every day for as long as the weather possibly allows, and I don’t even care that it’s not so super stylish. To me, they are the most comfortable footwear that a person could reasonably sport in public (ie., one step below giant grandma slippers). Anybody who knows me could tell you that I am really serious about how much I love wearing flip flops.

I know that plenty of brides change out of their pretty heels into comfier shoes after the ceremony and the pictures are over, but I really just want to wear these all day long. Honestly, who’s gonna see ’em? I don’t have any particular interest in shoe pictures, either by themselves or once they’re on my feet (see above, re: not a shoe girl), so who other than me would know that I’m wearing the world’s most comfortable footwear underneath my gown?

On the other hand, I can already hear the “TRAGIC!!!” and the “OH MY GOD YOU CANNOT WEAR FLIP FLOPS WITH YOUR WEDDING DRESS!!!” escaping from the mouths of certain bridesmaids-who-shall-remain-nameless, so I’m going to see what you all think. Rubber flip flops for a decidedly non-beach wedding: viable or cringe-inducing option?

I want to wear ridiculously low heels too! My FI and I are practically the same height (although he insists he’s taller… sure.) so I don’t want to wear tall heels! I looked at the strappy gold jcrew ones too, but man there aren’t a lot of options aside from ballet flats!

I think it’s totally fine to sport the flippy floppies. I plan on ceremony my relatively short heels to walk down the aisle..and that’s about it.

I am also just not much of a shoe girl and I want to be as comfortable and non klutzy as possible on my wedding day.

And, people won’t see your feet much anyways!

I’m wearing those thick rubber flip flops, actually the ones I wore to my senior ball 4 years ago. I do get the, you’re wearing flip flops?! But, it’s totally me, so why not!

As a total shoe girl, I’m in the cringe category…there are so many beautiful flat or near-flat options out there (I love the gold pair above!), and you can wear flip-flops anytime…not your wedding, PLEASE, not your wedding!! :P Besides, your photog may want some cute shoe shots and you KNOW they are going to be in your “getting dressed” shots for all eternity. Unless they are truly your personality or some sort of inside joke, pick a pretty shoe. :)

I’m wearing flats because I am 5′10″, but I am a shoe gal and the flats I got are amazing! But I say, if you love the flip flops, go for it! You’re right, no one will see them. Make it special by buying a fancy pair (like the j. crew ones you showed) and not wearing them til the big day. You’ll be happy and that’s all the matters.

I am a shoe girl, but I also understand that not everyone else is. I think the flip flops are adorable, and you should wear them if you love them.

Go for it! It’s your day. I think you should wear flip-flops if that’s what you want to do. If your photog takes pictures of them, and you don’t want those particular pictures, don’t buy them.

do it! :) If I wasn’t getting married in February I totally would. As it is, I’ll probably go with ballet flats. Our venue is 2 floors, I’m going to be running around all day, I’m not comfy in heels, and the last thing ANYONE wants is a foot-pain-induced cranky bride on her wedding day!

We are feet twins. I love looking at pictures of pretty wedding shoes, and I can manage to walk in heels without toppling over, but I become the world’s. biggest. b***h. when my feet hurt after a few hours in heels. I do not want to be like that at my wedding! I am searching for a good paid of 2 inch heels, and completely accept the fact that I might change into flip flops or even some cute sneakers after the dancing really gets going!

Maybe find a cute pair o’ flats for the ceremony, then throw the flippers on for the reception?

What about flats or more dressy looking flip flops? I bet there is a ton out there…but the perfect pair of shoes are hard to find…I know! Im wearing flats…but I really wanted open toe flats or sandles but I couldnt find ones that were just right. Good luck.

You should absolutely wear the flip flops. If you don’t care about shoes, and you will be comfortable in those, then wear them. And tell the bridesmaid-remaining-nameless that she can keep that opinion to herself.

I too am a flip flop fiend. I was raised in Florida so I wore them all the time as well. My fiance’s mother even bought me a faux fur lined pair so I can sport them in the winter. Therefore, I will be wearing these:

There are a lot of options out there if you’re concerned that those may not be dressy enough, but no one’s going to know what they look like unless you let them see.

I have been to more than one wedding where the bride wore flip flops! And these weren’t beachy weddings, they were formal garden weddings or at fancy golf courses.
I say, do what makes you happy and wear whatever you want! I do love the second pair of kitten heels though…they are gorgeous!

The flip flops are adorable. You should wear them and be comfortable despite what that bridesmaid says. People get too caught up in “should-ing” themselves when it comes to weddings!

I say do it! Those are adorable. My FI and I are almost the same height and I wear flip flops all the time too, so I’m wearing pink ballet flats for the ceremony and changing into flip flops right after! :)

I am not a shoe gal either. love the look of 3 inch heels but they don’t love my feet. But I do love ms. scissors suggestion about the flats for the ceremony and then the flip flops for the reception. That would be something I would definitely do.

Wear them! You’ll be the one whose feet are in them. I’m wearing a pair of these:

I’m wearing a short dress with some type of flip flops. I’m definitely one of those people that think flop flops aren’t seasonal and I can’t imagine wearing anything but them
