I didn’t really understand what all the hoopla was about with these little cookies. Mrs Perfume, Miss Turtle, and Miss Rainbow all discuss their loveliness. But wedding sites keep posting pictures and describing their yumminess. So, I started craving them. Crazy, right? In all my life, I think I’ve probably eaten one macaron at a Vegas buffet or some place like that. How do you crave something you haven’t really ever had? All those descriptions… hard outer, chewy on the inside, creamy center. I could taste it. And I had no idea what they tasted like.
I had had enough of this drooling and dreaming BS. It was time to get me some of these damn macarons.

I made a special stop on my way home from work at one of my all time favorite bakeries in Chicago, Bittersweet. You’ve never been you say? Dude, serious? Go already. I get Future Mama-in-Law Hottie the flourless chocolate cake EVERY.SINGLE.YEAR! She’s addicted. I’ll admit it for her.
Back to macarons. Look above at the first picture again. Yup! I took a picture of every single one. Why? Look at them! Pretty right? They are freaking expensive. Why is it that in all those descriptions and pictures of macarons, the expensive part never got implanted in my memory?

The little beige ones (almond) and chocolate ones cost $16/lb and the colorful fancy ones cost a whooping $2 each. My jaw about hit the floor. Notice how the price totally didn’t stop me from buying each of them and walking home. I mean seriously! I made a special trip for these. I was getting me some macarons. Period. End of story. Upon further research, I came to find that $2 a macaron is actually not all that expensive. Craziness.
Then it was time to taste them. I made Mr. Hot Wings take this picture. He laughed at me and said I looked too intense. Oh, come on. It’s a $2 macaron! Hell yes I’m intense about it. (Can you see my pom making station sitting next to me?)

I started with the cheaper ones that they sold by the pound.

Whoa, the cream filling started oozing out of this almond one. Yummy, but not really my thing. But those colorful pretty ones are freaking awesome! They tasted exactly how I had imagined. Delicate, savory, not super sweet, and chewy on the inside. Perfect. I get it! And the chocolate ones, oh my. They are filled with some sort of ganache I think. I’m in heaven. I’m a believer!
And that is the story of how I came to learn about the macaron. I am a believer in the $2 macaron.
Are you a believer too? Tell me about your glorious macaron stories!
