About Mrs. Octopus

The Reluctant Exerciser

April 20th, 2010 @ 9:45 am by Mrs. Octopus

I hate to exercise. I really wish I liked it, but I just don’t, and never, ever have. I am not naturally athletic at all—in fact, you might go so far as to say “super-clumsy and awkward”—and if I had the choice between exercising and sprawling on the couch with a blanket and a book or a movie, I would pick lounging every single time.

But I do exercise. I often struggle to keep it up regularly, but I do it. I exercise because I recognize that my body does feel a lot better when I’m staying active, and because it’s apparently not just an urban legend that regular exercise helps you manage your weight and stay toned. And now, with the wedding approaching, I’m trying really hard to exercise several times a week, so that I look and feel great when the day rolls around. So for all you grudging and reluctant exercisers, maybe it will help to see some of the things I, your kindred spirit, do to keep myself motivated, active, and fit.

Fitness Classes

I love doing group exercise classes for two reasons. One, they push me to work out hard, for a good amount of time. Left to my own devices, I will pop onto the elliptical machine for a fluffy 25-minute “workout” while catching up on my Oprah reruns on the little TVs and call it a day. Two, they force me to get my money’s worth out of my gym membership. One of my friends refers to her monthly gym dues as “charitable donations”, and I strive to avoid that. I might hate exercising, but I REALLY hate feeling like I’m pouring my money down the toilet. I am much more likely to go to the gym when I feel like I have an “appointment” at a certain time. I am super, super uncoordinated, so I often look and feel approximately like this while in my fitness class:

but I think it’s fun, which is really a high endorsement coming from me. If you don’t have a gym membership, I’ve heard that those classes where you run around and do workouts on playgrounds and whatnot also get GREAT results.

Exercise Videos

The Reluctant Exerciser : wedding fitness pittsburgh Jillian jillian

My personal favorite Jillian Michaels-ism is when she tells me I should be “gargling my heart”.

I rely on this woman for all of my home fitness needs. I own 30 Day Shred and No More Trouble Zones, and they are both fabulous. They’re really challenging—No More Trouble Zones much more so than 30 Day Shred, in my opinion—which is what I want in exercise DVDs. My philosophy is that if I’m going to skip the gym in favor of springing around my living room in a bra and pajama pants, it should probably be the equivalent of an actual gym trip, and I think Jillian’s DVDs are.

Trick Yourself Into Exercising

When Mr. O and I lived in Las Vegas, we sometimes liked to go hike in Red Rock Canyon (which was right near our apartment) or travel outside the city to Mt. Charleston. That way, it’s not an hour and a half of cardio! It’s a quiet, scenic date with your fiance!

Bonus of desert hiking: you might, to your GREAT excitement, come across a wild burro!

Reward Yourself

This might sound frivolous to some, but for me, it’s actually a really important motivating factor in keeping myself active. If I don’t have anything to look forward to and to spur me in continuing to work out, I will give up, for a long period of time, until I feel guilty enough to start again. So, I give myself little presents for accomplishing my goals. Note: your reward for exercising shouldn’t be something totally counterproductive—i.e., food. Although I have an epic passion for desserts, I try really hard to avoid that “but I deserve it” type of emotional eating.

Here are some relatively inexpensive things I do treat myself to: manicures, pedicures, new makeup, a DVD, a cheap-ish article of clothing… you get the idea. It works wonders for my drive to keep it up!

What tips can you share to keep your motivation for exercise high?

Fellow awkward exercise-hater here! My motivation is a little counter-intuitive, but it’s that if I want to keep eating out, I *need* to exercise so I don’t balloon up!

Octopus, you are strummin’ my pain with your fingers. I, too, HATE to exercise. I’m also severely uncoordinated/awkward/unathletic. We should start a club. :)

Good post… I can totally relate! I have a hard time being consistent as to how often I work out… but time is running out before the wedding and I need to stay on track! This article was good motivation for me to step it up a bit!

I love Red Rock Canyon! There and Valley of Fire are my favorite places to hike. Vegas has some great places for it!

I hate the gym, but I want to be in better shape, so I get myself to go there. I let myself watch Gossip Girl while I eliptical, and that makes me feel better… and I work out twice a week with a personal trainer, which I dread until I get there, mildly hate while I am doing it, and then feel really awesome about afterwards.

Group fitness classes are definitely what keep me motivated. I have the Les Mills classes at my gym and I love them, especially Bodyflow and Bodystep!

I’m doing a boudoir session so that is definitely my major motivation factor as I want those pictures to capture my most tone and “beautiful” body I’ll ever have. Once the wedding is over, I’ll be back on that couch with a pint of ice cream and awesome buffets of food! LoL!

ahhh, yess!! Another person who loathes exercise as much as I do!! I had to hire a personal trainer for a while just to get my butt in the gym, but the minute I stopped that, the trips to the gym were no more. I keep telling myself I need to go back, but miraculously I find that baking some cupcakes and then proceeding to “taste test” half of them sounds sooo much more appealing. Maybe it’s because I’m a tiny person that I don’t have that obvious motivation to exercise. God help me if my metabolism ever slows down!!

I’m naturally small and have a fast metabolism, but I do struggle with workout motivation. Especially since I don’t technically have to. But I’m trying to live a healthier lifestyle and working out is part of that.

For me it helps a lot to not think “I hate to exercise”. Getting into a positive attitude about it can really help.

I like to watch The Biggest Loser every week. It really inspires and motivates me to see people who have struggled with weight issues become impowered and take on all of these tough challenges. I tell myself if a 300 pound person can run five miles, so can I. Or I can at least do my best and work my way up to it.

Also, buying new running shoes, paying for the gym, or any other financial type investments in your working out help motivate me because I’m doing my best to get my money’s worth out of those things.

Also, sometimes you just have to be like Nike and “just do it”. It’s not fun, but you feel better about yourself after you did it than you would if you didn’t.

Oh exercise..something I need to do. Hiking is a really good one for Mr. Lace and I cept that we seldom do it. Bike riding too…except that I need to get a new bike. :) Great tips.

I totally agree about fitness classes. I’m in a twice-a-week class right now that I paid for and having already paid for it is a huge motivator to go, and I don’t want to look lazy when I’m there so I work harder than I would working out by myself!

Ugh I hate exercising too, I am totally unmotivated! I’ve NEVER been able to do a push-up or sit-up in my entire life.. lots of bad memories from junior high PE class lol. I think I could’ve gotten away with my pre-baby body, but pregnancy redistributed my weight in quite a disadvantageous way. :(

Even so, I can’t get myself to go to the gym, I really need a personal trainer!

Hey Ladies!

Have you tried zumba! It’s totally awesome and allows you to “work out” without realizing it! Its like going to a club and dancing around for an hour…definitely try a class!

Great tips! I hate exercising too and recently started going back since our wedding. Yes, I got married like 8 mos ago and I am NOW just going back to the gym *hangs head in shame*. But I’m exercising more now than I did before the wedding, so YAY me :)
Anyway, I’m totally behind the idea of having an appointment, like the class. I have a trainer and having an apt with her TOTALLY keeps and kept me accountable. There is NO way THAT much money is going to end up being a “charitable donation’ ;-)

@weaverm26: I just checked my gym schedule and I can Zumba on Fridays. I might have to give this a try. Thanks :)

I started playing ultimate frisbee awhile ago and I’m finally getting to the point where I’m not running around confused and aimless. Yay! But now there’s a girl who plays with us who is WAY faster than me and I always end up trying to cover her. That’s definitely my current motivation, because I am getting SMOKED!

I have a lot of poundage to lose before my 2011 wedding, and just managed to haul my ass to the gym today, first time in over a month!

My main thing, though, is swimming. I nearly drowned a few times as a kid, and had real issues about being in the water. The solution? A gym membership, followed by a private swimming lesson. Best money I ever spent. I can now swim properly, without embarrassing myself floundering around, even if I’m not the speediest. I now swim three times a week, 20 lengths each time (working up to 80 lengths per week, a full mile!) and get at least one moment each session where I’m grinning like an eejit, I’m so happy I can finally swim! The achievement is motivation enough in itself. Plus, FI learned at the same time, and it’s great to have exercise we will happily do together.
We’ve decided our honeymoon is gonna have to be somewhere really watery so we can do all the jet ski etc stuff we couldn’t do before!
