LGN Diet

April 21st, 2010 @ 11:48 am by Mrs. Lace

One day, not too long ago, I was over at a friend’s house for a birthday party. It was a potluck and when my friends and I have potlucks, the food is always good. Not those crappy potlucks where people bring lame dishes in hopes that someone else brings something good. Nope. At our parties, everyone brings good food.

Well, I was going for my third Porto’s cheese roll when I said, “I probably shouldn’t eat this. There’s this white dress I need to make sure I can fit into in a couple months.”

A friend who is also getting married in June said, “Are you on the LGN diet too?”

“Huh? What’s that?” I said.

He laughed and walked away.

I thought and I thought and couldn’t figure it out so I asked one of our other friends if he knew what it was.

He, too, laughed at me and said, “the Look Good Naked Diet.”

“Ohhh. (pause) OHHHHH.” It took me a second.

So, I’ve never been really good at dieting.

I love iced caramel macchiatos from Starbucks, Popeye’s fried chicken, Korean BBQ, American BBQ, cheese, chocolate cake, chocolate in general, brownies, Coke, rice… you get the picture. There have only been two times in my twenties where I lost a significant amount of weight.

The first time was during winter quarter of my senior year of college. I think my metabolism sped way up right before it was going to slow WAY DOWN so I lost a bunch of weight without really doing anything at all for a month or two. That was so awesome.

The second time was a year ago when I found out I was prediabetic. My grandmother was diabetic and when I had a blood test done for a physical, my doctor said I was at risk of developing diabetes if I wasn’t careful about my food intake and exercise. I wasn’t really fazed by it at first until she said that I could lose my eyesight and limbs from severe diabetes. Well, that kicked me into high gear. I met with my best friend’s mom who is a nutritionist and she told me all about the diabetic diet. In 3 months, I lost about 15 lbs. just by changing the way I eat. So here are the main ideas of the diabetic diet.

  1. Limit the amount of carbohydrates you eat. This doesn’t mean to NOT eat carbs, but to limit them to 6-9 servings a day. A slice of toast is one serving. A venti iced caramel macchiato is five servings.
  2. Change your carb intake to whole grains and oats. It’ll keep you full longer. Eat more of your carbs during the daytime where you’re more likely to burn it off. Avoid eating a lot of carbs at night when all you do is sit there and watch Grey’s Anatomy.
  3. Indulge in a small amount of sweets ONCE in awhile. If you say you’ll NEVER have any of your favorite chocolate cake or caramel macchiato, you’re sure to break your diet. Have it in very small portions, very infrequently so that you don’t hate life.
  4. Eat lots of vegetables. Eat fruit too, but remember, fruit has sugar which is just like carbs. This counts for juice, too. Juice often has as much sugar as soda!
  5. Eat 4-5 small meals during the day rather than 3 large meals. This speeds up your metabolism since there’s always something to digest and you don’t overeat at each meal.
  6. Yes, I have to say it. Exercise regularly. Although, at the time I had lost the weight, I was exercising about 2 times a week for an hour at a time.

And just to remind you, although I did this a year ago and lost 15 lbs., I haven’t… er… uh… started yet.

Do you have any other tips to add to the LGN Diet?

I used the Curves program as a kickstart before and was doing really well, but I didn’t keep to the good habits. I really need to start again, but it seems like maybe I need a kick in the rear to do it.

A few years ago I had a job as a tour guide - I lost ten pounds while eating horribly and without ever breaking a sweat. It was just from walking all day. Once I got a desk job the weight all came back, even though I was eating better.

I think exercise is so key… I follow a fairly healthy diet now, but when I make the effort to exercise regularly, even if it’s just 20 minutes a day, it makes *such* a difference.

this is pretty much the diet i’m on now, i can’t do any cardio because i have lung issues so my weightloss really has to be through changing my eating habits. it is HARD to keep my carbs down, i didn’t realized how addicted i was to certain foods until i started cutting them out!

I have been doing all of the things you listed for the last 4 weeks or so and have lost about 13 lbs. I was being stubborn before about not wanting to change my eating habits- because I eat fairly healthy and was working out like crazy- but it really is all about your diet. Once I started limiting my carbs, reducing my portion sizes and eating more often, I saw a difference right away.

The only other thing I would add would be trying to get more protein into your diet when you can. I’ve been doing the lower calorie protein shakes when I can in conjunction with my workouts- it’s supposed to be good for helping build muscle which in turn burns more fat.

@alivoo01 & @Miss Pretzel: Yup my friends and I use it all the time now.

@dookie32: Oh good for you!! Yes, I have about two months so if I get on this, I think I could probably lose 10 lbs.

@MeghanV: Desk jobs are the worst! I’m up and about a lot of the time as a teacher, but when I used to work in an office, I gained a ton of weight.

never heard LGN diet, but it totally makes sense.

I don’t have any other helpful hints diet -wise. I’m trying to cut out fast food and alcohol completely from now until the wedding, but it’s going to be tough. I’ve been doing this for a week so far but I haven’t really seen any results. I do 30 minutes to one hour of intense cardio, a strength training session with my personal trainer and I try to keep my calories below 1400. But I think my body has reached a sort of equilibrium and doesn’t want to drop any more pounds.

@BrianneG: My body does that every month or so if I’m working out. Do you do the same kind of cardio and strength training everytime? I’m sure you personal trainer knows, but I remember my personal trainer (when I had one) telling me to swtich it up every few weeks b/c your body will grow accustomed to the cardio you’re doing. So if you always run on the treadmill, try the stairclimber or elliptical to kinda shock your body.

Yeah, I’m hoping to get a more active job soon, cuz sitting at a desk has definitely made me gain about 20 lbs in the last few years. Plus I don’t exercise and eat whatever I want…but I’m blaming it on the job! ;)

Ooo, the juice would be a tough one. The rest is pretty much the way I already am but juice - it’s my Achilles heel. :)

You know what I have hypoglycemia and have to eat the same way - and as soon as I was diagnosed as being hypoglycemic I lost like 15 pounds! My best advise - if you are a carb junky switch to multigrains or whole wheats! Oh and while I can’t have much sugar (which is a pain in the ass with the whole wedding cake thing) I eat 1 or 2 dove dark chocolates a night (the little promises kind) there isn’t a whole lot of sugar and it’s just a little something that doesn’t break how I need to eat to stay healty! plus it helps chocolate fixes :)

If it’s hard to cut juice for you, you could try mixing it with water or sparkling water, you’d cut down the sugar a bit that way but still get the flavor.

love the idea of the LGN diet ha ha ha! I used sparkpeople to lose the weight I needed and wanted to lose and it truly was amazing because it wasn’t really a diet at all! It’s about portion and nutrient control coupled with exercise! It’s about learning to live a healthy lifestyle and that pretty much sounds like the plan you’ve spelled out! So awesome!
