Mrs. Pencils, Washington DC/Frederick, MD Age and Occupation: 24, Program Director, Education Non Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Administrative Assistant, Ocean Conservation Non Profit Engagement Date: July 26, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: Morningside Inn About Me: I'm a nerdy Northwestern girl who always knew she was meant to live in the East, harboring a deep love of ice cream, underwear, Diet Coke with a splash of Coca-Cola, pashminas, scrapbooking, stationery, wall calendars and books written for preteens. I think every day should include good thin crust pizza, chocolate, an obscure historical monument, lots of laughter, a dash of wedding planning and, of course, amazing Mr. Pencils! About Mrs. Pencils

Many moons ago, Mr. Pencils and I wanted to have the “registry experience”. I required requested that we swing by one of the locations we had planned to register at to do so in person.

It was a rainy Saturday night in October, and Mr. and Ms. Pencils had just eaten a classy meal of Subway. They entered their local Target with all intentions of creating their first round of registering. Little did they know that a Saturday night was perhaps the worst time to register. Many hours before, during daylight, countless couples had spent their days registering at this very store, ringing up panini presses, towels, hampers, and other home goods.

This manifested itself in Mr. and Ms. Pencils going through one, then two, then three, then four, and finally FIVE separate registry scanners. Each one would work long enough to scan two items and then go kaput. Dead, from lack of battery.

After two hours of fail after fail, the Pencils were resolute: do your registering online.

What’s your registry advice?

we registered at target in person, simply because they offered a $15 gift card just for registering. it was several months ago, so we only registered for like 8 or 10 things. everything else we registered for online. ALTHOUGH, i do have to say, registering online can be a hassle, because not everything in the store is available online. there are lots fewer options (at least with target).

We registered at Bed, Bath and Beyond. Our helper-lady gave us one and then because she knew that one would probably die at any second, had another one “locked and loaded”.

We registered at Target, Macy’s, and Crate & Barrel all on the same day. It was an experience, for sure…!

Haha - awww. It wasn’t meat to be. In person, at least. The thing I learned was to register for lots of things and different price points!

We learned to eat before you register. If you have things you don’t care to register for take two scanners. Example, I don’t really care about luggage - fiance took control of that while I scanned all kitchen items EXCEPT the electrics. Don’t ask questions at the store b/c you get too much info in return and often times that info is combines with their personal opinion. You don’t want all of that - - trouble shoot on line once you’ve gotten home.

Oh, come on, Target! We registered online. I could never convince Mr. Snow to get on board with fake shopping…

We did Macy’s, Target and JCPenney. Future hubs mocked my little sis and I about our pre-scan gun excitement. Then he got a hold of it…I couldn’t get it back the rest of the trip. He literally snarled like a wild beast when I made my attempt to grab it back. =)

We did both of our registries online. It was awesome. We did go to the store and look at items in person before making our selections.

We registered online too! Wasn’t meant to be since we live in northern Maine and everytime we went back MA last thing my FH wanted to do was shop - even the lure of the scanner wasn’t enough

We did online, but a lot of our family went to the store to buy stuff, and they didn’t have it there. We got doubles of a few things because they didn’t have them scan the registry list. I think we should have done both so I can see the actual item we were registering for.

My advice: register at Macy’s lol. They leave you alone and let you do your thing when you want, then make sure they’re around when you need help. lol

argh–five scanners? they clearly were trying to thwart you. we did most of our research online, looked at the products in the store to be sure, and then finished online. mr. pug really didn’t like being in the store.

I think I would have left after the second one crapping out on us. I mean come on, how hard is it to put new batteries in those things!! I think the only place I want to physically register is Crate and Barrel, cause they give you booze :)

I would go into the store to compare quality (of linens/towels) and if they were offering something (gift card, etc). Otherwise, we’d do it online too.

Ditto Hamster. People blew us away with everything they purchased. It’s slightly uncomfortable to register for stuff when you know you’re just nicely asking people to buy you things. But after two showers, our registry was wiped clean and we had to add a bunch more stuff for the 3rd shower and the actual wedding. Various price-points is key, and respectful of your guests’ various budgets.

Ouch! Five scanners and still a fail? At least you got to walk around and keep in mind what you want to register for and can do it online? I’m more of a touch and feel prior to purchase kind of gal. We’re doing our first registry tonight so we’ll see how that goes!

Oh man, that is a major bummer! Still trying to convince the man to go do it. He said we need to scout the store first. haha. And he hates shopping, ouch!

I am actually not a fan of stuff that is online only for stores you can visit. We did register at Amazon for some items like games and other items that we couldn’t get at bbb. They have free shipping so that makes up for it. I HATE paying shipping and avoid items that are on people’s registries that I can only get online and haveto pay for shipping. I love Amazon and it’s super saver shipping. It helps me purchase my christmas presents in advance so I can take advantage of the free shipping.

Too bad! I was determined to have a real registry experience too! We live far away from anything resembling a normal store so we have to include registry adventures when we travel. Thankfully our 21 month engagement allows for that. Online works too though!
