Veilspiration

April 21st, 2010 @ 2:46 pm by Mrs. Octopus

When I first started shopping for my wedding dress, the thought of a veil hadn’t really crossed my mind. I was sure I wanted one—I love the classic bridal look they create—but ’veil: wear one’ was as far as the plan went. I tried on a few different styles here and there, and mostly went “ehhhh…”. Until, out of curiosity, I donned the biggest, bride-iest, veil-iest veil in the store. A big ol’ cathedral-length veil with a thin ribbon trim that extended past the train of my dress. I saw the way the light ivory tulle floated out from my hair, hovered behind my shoulders, and trailed lightly behind me on the floor, and I was in pink-puffy-heart love. I knew that I most definitely wanted to wear what I super-classily deemed, “the big-ass veil.”

And then the attendant told me that it cost $175. Yooowwwwch. The veil was bee-yoo-tiful, all right—but $175? For a long piece of tulle attached to a plastic comb? Couldn’t do it.

I still really, really wanted a big-ass veil, though. Solution? Hire Bridesmaid Clara’s amazingly talented seamstress mom to make one for me instead! She feels sure that with a few inspiration pictures and some Internet research, she can turn out a gorgeous cathedral veil with no problems, at an itty-bitty fraction of the retail price. Hooray!

Now, some pictures!

Oooh, Lawdy. Something about those long, floaty veils just gives me the tingles. I can’t wait to see what Bridesmaid Clara’s mom comes up with.

What kind of veil are you going to wear? Or, are you going to skip it altogether?

I’m wearing a cathedral length veil :) The one at the bridal store cost $150 and I thought it was a joke with the crappy little silver beads that looked pathetic on the edges. I actually bought my veil from a friend I made on here through the boards!

Skipping it altogether. I never really envisioned myself wearing one. Hopefully there will be no veil regret. :)

Doing a big-ass veil as well! Thought I’d go with a birdcage but kinda went in the opposite direction :D

I’m wearing a long cathedral veil too. I am borrowing it from a sorority sister for a lovely cost of $0. :-)

I swoon over cathedral veils! Unfortunately, it doesn’t work with my dress so I’ll be sporting a 2-tiered elbow length veil. Can’t wait to see your veil though!

Can’t wait to see it!! My FMIL just finished my long veil! The bonus with having someone make it for you: The length can be whatever you want! I went with one that just hits the floor so I can wear it a while. And $15 is MUCH better than the $175 one I wanted.

I love elbow length veils! Is that even what they are called? I guess kind of a full, mid-length veil is my fave. Everyone I know loves the long ones with the lace edge, but I need a spunkier veil myself! (Although long ones are certainly beautiful and romantic!)

I made my chapel length veil (with the help of my momma) and I love it! Seeing these pictures makes me even more excited to wear it!

Oooh you wagon, I had completely rubbished the idea of me in a veil, and now you’ve got me thinking I could be wrong! They all look gorgeous! And dammit, I’d convinced myself I was opposed to the very idea of veils ( they date from a time where the groom essentially bought his bride, and had no idea what he was getting until it was too late to chicken out), that my mister knows exactly what he’s getting, we’ve been together 10 years!

Half assed principle that is, if I can fling it down the well so easily! Hahaha!!

I haven’t decided yet. I love those photos you posted! I currently feel a veil is probably not “me,” though. But I’m holding off on that decision for a while.

The darn volacano cancelled my dream veil, the french silk tulle the maker ordered can’t get here in time, don’t know what to do. But I will be wearing a fingertip drop veil, it’s the look I have wanted since I was old enough to dream about my wedding.

I just got a big swirly veil in the mail and I loooooove it. I’m not sure it is going to work with my dress, but yeah, I’m kinda on team go big or go…to a hair flower. :)

I just wore a veil for the ceremony and it was a fingertip length bubble veil. I wanted one that was really poofy.

I’ve always thought that bride with no veil = no bride, so I knew I would have worn one. Long ago, my heart set on a waltz-length mantilla veil (where mantilla veil meant circular/oval piece of silk tulle bordered with French Alencon lace).

Well, days ago I went to a shop searching for a suitable French Alencon lace to use as the edge and all of a sudden I find this mantilla veil (where mantilla veil meant RECTANGULAR piece of silk Valencienne lace — basically a lace scarf) from Spain.

And I bought it!

Now I’m thinking to wear it like a proper Spanish mantilla, or better yet similar to the way Mary of Denmark wore it.

But I’m still unresolved about the other mantilla… I sure love the one I bought though!

PS my suggestion is to splurge on the veil… don’t use a cheap piece of nylon for your wedding day… the prettier your gown look the more you need something au pair with it!
