Why I Love Weddings, Remembered

April 21st, 2010 @ 12:38 pm by Mrs. Lamb

Lambster and I attended our first wedding as a married couple the other week. We had been looking forward to its as we had grown with our friends from college dating, through Navy long distance relationships, and into engagement land.

Not only were we able to rejoice with them as they joined us on the married side of life, but I found my wedding joy again. I wasn’t sure if weddings would ever be the same to me as when I was a wishful singleton dreamer. Planning our own wedding exposed me to the stressful, headache inducing side of things and though I’ll never forget the experience, I’m so glad that I can enjoy weddings again since they’re not my own!

I held my husband’s hand while they repeated their vows, and I rubbed his wedding ring. I appreciated the natural beauty of the outdoor ceremony space, the fragrance of the flowers, the taste of the wine, and the laughter at the toasts. I ate Pennsylvania and Ohio shaped cookies from the cookie buffet (representing the bride and groom’s home states). All simple joys.

Sure, I noticed the little touches that the bride worked so hard on (like the calligraphy place cards), but what I really remember was the feeling of love. We felt so comfortable with their welcoming families. We chatted, laughed, and toasted with our tablemates. We danced cheek to cheek to Oldies. That’s why I love weddings - the experience of the fullness of love that radiates from the beginning of a marriage.

Have you lost that loving feeling towards weddings? Were you able to get it back?

I’m not married yet, but going to weddings with my FI makes us think - that’s us in the near future/few months. It helps calm the wedding nerves and ease the brain of wedding stress.

What a sweet and wonderful sentiment! I hope our friends and family will feel the same when they join us for our wedding celebration. I can relate to those feelings– they’re what I felt when his cousin got married just two weeks ago. <3

I’m excited about our post-wedding weddings, too. We’ve got one coming up in Feb. ‘11, if not sooner!

Great post! I was worried about the same thing, but I’m glad to hear that it was in a way even more meaningful for you now that you are married!

I am worried that once I get to the “other side” weddings will lose the magic. Yet somehow I doubt it. Your right, the love is what doesn’t get old and I think attending others happy days will only serve to remind us of our own.

Great post. I love weddings even more know (didn’t think that was possible!) because of just the reason you explained — it reminds me of how much we love each other, too! Thanks for sharing :)

What a wonderful post! I agree whole-heartedly. I love my husband dearly, and for the most part, loved our wedding… it was everything I had ever dreamed.

However, the road to get there was more stressful than I ever could have imagined. I had always been a planner, so thought it would be fine. Now, looking back, I know that weddings are much more than planning your lives together and throwing a party - it’s blending everyone’s expectations and trying to come up with something that still resonates with you. Planning a wedding isn’t stressful - it’s the people that are stressful. No matter how much we love them. (Your previous post, about trying to please people, also really resonated with me.)

And then when it was over, as much as I loved our wedding, as much as it represented us, I didn’t know if it was all worth it. If I would do it all again for that one day.

And then I went to my first wedding, post-wedding, of two dear friends. And I also felt the love of the room, the love between my husband and I, and for me, it settled it. I would do it again in a heartbeat. :-)

Because these moments are magical. And I’d rather collect experiences than anything else.

Thanks for sharing.

I actually never had any feeling of love for weddings LOL they were more of a hassle… all right, I would rather go to a wedding than a funeral but i would go with the same sense of boredom and obligation.

Planning mine actually made me enjoy weddings a lot more… I finally understood why people get so stressed, and I have a lot more empathy :)
