A Song to Dance With Dad

April 22nd, 2010 @ 2:26 pm by Mrs. Dolphin

When it comes to the father/daughter dance song, I really want to find a song that both my dad and I really like,. I don’t want to be a crying mess dancing with my dad—I want to have a good time and ’dance it out’ with my dad.

I’ve been listening to a lot of music my dad used to play to me while I was growing up. While some songs are not as appropriate (The Monkeys), others are good contenders (Elton John, Billy Joel, Fleetwood Mac, etc). Here are a few songs I’ve been listening to.

Fleetwood Mac “Landslide”

Elton John “Tiny Dancer”

Billy Joel “Lullaby”

Elton John “Your Song”

John Mayer “Daughters”

Elton John “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”

Tom Petty “Free Fallin’” (Live from Gainesville ROCK CITY!)

John Mayer does an acoustic version of Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin” but I prefer the original (even if it isn’t really wedding appropriate).

Okay, so there are quite a few from Elton John. What can I say? I’ve got a thing for Elton. :) I have so many songs I like… are we allowed more then just 1 father/daughter dance?

Which one do y’all like most? Do you have any other suggestions? What does Dolphin Dad think?

Love “Tiny Dancer”! And it’s has some nice up-beat moments which can lighten the mood. Can’t make it through the first verse of “Lullaby” without ughly-crying.

I wanted to do Landslide, but my dad vetoed it as too sad. Daughters is also too sad for me, since it’s about a girl whose dad walked out on her and has relationship issues as a result. I love your other choices though! My dad and I ended up settling on James Taylor – You’ve got a friend.

My Dad and I are going totally sappy with “I loved her first” by Heartland. I had my Dad pick the song he wanted. I like “Your Sing” personally. It may be hard to dance to though….

Tiny Dancer, no question! It’s a classic for a reason. So beautiful, and sentimental without inducing a bawl-fest, amiright?! :)

My dad is a HUGE Jimmy Buffett fan so I found “Little Miss Magic” to be perfect. I haven’t heard it mentioned much though.

I am a stevie nicksaholic so i am walking in to landslide. i don’t think it is a sad song-it’s a coming of age song.

I’m actually leaning towards Landslide, because my dad used to play Fleetwood Mac albums all the time when I was little. And I’ve always loved the orginal Landslide (not Dixie Chicks version, ugh). We did an accapella arrangement of Lullaby by Billy Joel in high school, and to this day I know my alto part. It’s a great song :)

@Champagne Wishes: @lydiacruze: I LOVE “Tiny Dancer” and that is the song Dolphin Dad chose!! It is nice and upbeat. Plus, I danced all throughout my childhood, so it makes the song that much better.

I agree with some of the other songs being a little sad. The songs always sound good in ‘theory’ but I don’t know if I’d be able to dance to any of them! Dancing with my Dad at the Wedding will be the first time we have ever danced together if we don’t practice before!

tiny dancer seems a little weird to me for a father daughter song: “oh how it feels so real, lying here with no one near only you” and also the line “lay me down in sheets of linen”

I hope I don’t offend anyone. I’m just sayin.

These are some great, fun options! I just sent my Dad a pretty similar list and can’t wait to see what he picks out. One of our top contenders is “Return to Pooh Corner” by Kenny Loggins.

This is a similar list to mine – I also wanted to play a song my Dad and I used to listen to when I was little. I was thinking about Sweet Dream Baby by Roy Orbison. My dad is a huge Orbison fan. The others I am thinking of are Somewhere Over the Rainbow or How I will Say I Love You by Tony DeSare (who happens to be a friend of mine from college).

Our short list consists of

Till there was you – The beatles (he’s a huge fan)
Brown eyed Girl – Van Morrison
Your Song – Sir Elton

And we’re going to end it with Walk like an eygptian or Rockin Robin – 2 of my favorite childhood songs that me and dad would dance to on sat mornings while mom cooked breakfast

We did Billy Joel’s Lullably. It was suggested by our DJ and I fell in love with it. I had that about Butterfly Kisses but that was used so much a while ago. I also thought about “I loved her First” but that’s what my sister used so I wanted to be different.

I LOVE “Lullaby” but am terrified of bawling my eyes out, so right now it’s a toss up between that and “The Way You Look Tonight” (the slower Tony Bennett version, Ol’
Blue Eyes is a little to fast for dear Daddy). Interested in what you pick!

My mom has always said that Landslide reminds her of her father…

My sister danced to Landslide with my dad, the live version though where she dedicates it to her dad. I am dancing to James Taylor’s You Can Close Your Eyes….my dad and I love James and he actually picked out the song five years ago when I was single, so unlike him.

John Mayer is my favorite of all time, but whoever said “Daughters” is a sad song was right (and my dad loves that song, so I’ll probably have to talk him out of it myself). Is it really sad that whenever I think of wedding songs, I think of J. Lo in The Wedding Planner telling people to listen to the words before they pick “I Honestly Love You” as their song?

I always find romantic-like songs SO awkward on the father-daughter and mother-son dances!

I think something a la Frank Sinatra, is so much more appropriate, and likely, more of your dad’s generation too, which fits :)
