About Mrs. Lobster

Confession: I’m scared of flowers.

Before wedding planning, my flower facts included yellow roses are for friends and the fact that I like gerbera daisies (just to prove how clueless I am, the first time I wrote this post it read “Gerber daisies”. Gerber as in the baby food brand, sigh). I can tell if something is “pretty” but I can’t verbalize what I like about them. This is why I dreaded the floral decisions.

Sadly, Googling “wedding flowers” didn’t help me much either. Then I found Style Me Pretty’s 121 pages of floral inspiration and Martha Stewart Weddings’ flower section.

I’ve always loved the fluffiness of them but I’m pretty sure peonies are out of the question in August. Then I found a viable alternative from Martha Stewart… and look how fluffy they look!

Better yet, roses are less delicate than peonies and so they’ll be able to withstand the August heat and my abuse better (I don’t treat my things nicely, especially under stress). I also like dahlias and ranunculus, but maybe more for the centerpieces:

I love how the tones of pinks and purples in this centerpiece tie the colors together.

The multiple vases with different or single blooms adds some texture to the tablescape. The antique silver vases add a nice vintage garden feel, too!

As you know, many brides are shocked when they get their first floral proposal. I didn’t want to be one of them. Luckily, I stumbled upon Weddingbee’s sister site Weddingbee PRO which has florist bloggers. This blog post was also helpful in understanding why wedding flowers are priced the way they are.

I am now armed with a few ideas and inspiration and a better knowledge of floral pricing. The next step would be to meet with one of the recommended florists.

Are you as scared of the floral decisions as I am? How did you do your research to prepare yourself?

great inspiration photos! i searched and searched for different arrangements and styles, but ended up taking the easy route and going pretty traditional (esp. when the florist told me that the multiple smaller arrangements would be more expensive).

I told my florist the budget for my flowers upfront. I sad do not discuss with me any ideas that are going to cost $10,000, and to please try very hard to not go over my budget. I said it like 100 times. I knew to do this because my mom told me when she went to my sisters’ first flower meeting ( a few years ago) the florists were like ” Oh we can do this and this and this ….” and then she said she got the proposal and it was $15000! LOL.

Thanks for posting this! I’m and August bride too, and was starting to get worried that I should have booked someone by now. I have no idea about flowers I can’t even decide on a color to match my girls royal blue dress with silver braided straps. Before reading this I e-mailed a florist, hoping they are available on my day and that they can work with my budget.

I’m with ya, girl. I seem to have a “talent” for picking the most expensive thing(s?) out of a lineup so flowers spooked me too. In preparation, I researched the most expensive types overall and then for the season I am getting married, then alternatives. It was mind-numbing (flowers are really not my passion) but ultimately paid off (literally) in my cost estimate. Good luck!

I was very nervous about the flower budget as well. But the florist was a family friendor and my parents were very gracious to pay for the flowers. so we lucked out.

I had absolutely no idea what flowers were what other than roses and tulips! I started googling flower names I heard to get an idea or printed pictures of flowers I liked and asked people if they knew what type of flower it was. Sad!!

That first centerpiece is gorgeous! I didn’t know much about flowers either, but my florist had these little books by color with pictures of flowers and the months/seasons they were available. Looking through those helped me a lot :)

I too knew nothing about flowers. But the florist we chose was very happy to hold my hand and show me examples of all the in-season-in-late-August-with-names-I’d-never-heard-of flowers. Oh, except roses. I’d heard of those! :) We’re getting hydrangeas, lysianthus, orchids and a few other things (I think?) in a palette of purples and apple green.

We ended up going with Atlas….I’m sure we’ll find out soon who you chose!

i was a little hesitant about the flowers as well. plus its hard to find a comprehensive site that lists what flowers are in season when [i've found several contradictory sites! so confusing!]. since i really want to take care of the centerpieces myself, its important to know what i can get and when!

the knot has a great new-ish flower guide! it’s usually posted on the front page of the site.

real simple weddings magazine (i call it a book) has a chart with types of flowers, the colors they come in, and what’s in season where.

I love that Martha Stewart centerpiece! The one that varies from white to dark pink. If I won the wedding lottery, I’d definitely want to have those.
