About Mrs. Seashell

Hands down, ABC’s Modern Family is one of the best shows on TV. At least Mr. Seashell and I think so. If you’re not watching, you’re missing out. It’s HILARIOUS!

Perhaps I enjoy the show because I can relate to having a family that’s less than conventional. Where should I start? Let’s see, circa 1975 my parents were married: Dad Seashell an upper class African American man and Mama Seashell a working class Italian American woman. After years of trying to (unsuccessfully) conceive I was adopted, and then my sister came along four years later. Soon after my sister was born, we came to learn that she was mentally disabled.

So, I introduce to you my family in all our black, white, adopted, and disabled glory! Aren’t we cute?

As a bride to be, having a unique family truly comes to life. Day to day, we are who we are, but at life’s milestones it seems remarkably special to remember the adversity my parents overcame to celebrate their own wedding day as well as integrate our cultures and traditions. For example, we are working to infuse our wedding with elements from Mama Seashell’s Italian culture, Dad Seashell’s family history on St. Thomas, and adapt pieces of the day to my sister’s abilities. (And I haven’t even gotten started on ways we’ll include Mr. Seashell’s family!)

What sets your family apart? How have you worked to embrace this on your wedding day?

I LOVE Modern Family. My favorite part is Lily, Cam and Mitchell’s daughter and how that baby has literally NO emotion. Ever notice that? She never cries, she never smiles, nothing. She just sits there. HILARIOUS!

You have a lovely family! I bet they are so happy for you! Good luck!

Modern Family is my FAVORITE!!! Yes, we are starting our own modern family…..I am white, raised in a small town, marrying my partner who is from the Philipines but raised in LA! She had a huge family, and my family is pretty small….there have already been many an interesting situation!

Just want to say first of all, BEAUTIFUL family! Love the picture of you all. The timing of your post was so perfect for my day… I spent the day at a celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. I’m a person w/ a disability as well (blind) and one of the key phrases today was “When you talk about diversity, talk about disability as well.” It sounds like you’ll has a wonderful day filled with family, friends, tradition, and joy!

Oh Seashell, you have a beautiful family! My family is italian-swiss-swedish-chilean, and my boyfriend’s family is jewish-hungarian-italian-argentinean… sometimes it can be challenging trying to “synthesize” so much, but it definitely makes our life together incredibly richer!

Is it weird that I want to hug your dad? Hehe! Your family is very cute. I was raised in a biracial family - I guess that qualifies as modern!
