Knowing that scent is tied to memory, and also knowing that I can still remember the perfume I was wearing when I went on my first date with Mr. French Fries (Juicy Couture, for those interested), I’ve been keeping my eye out for a wedding day perfume for quite some time now.
I’ve stopped at the perfume counter on a few shopping trips, and originally thought that I would go with Marc Jacobs new scent, Lola. I currently wear Daisy, so when they described this as the “older, more grown up sister to Daisy” I was sure I would love it.

I sprayed a bit on my arm and went on about my day. You see, some perfumes have a tendency to get a bit funky when they mix with my body chemistry. So, I spray it on my body, let it settle, and then decide if I want to buy it. I call it the “sniff test”. So, with Lola, I performed my sniff test. At another store in the mall? Sniff. Driving in the car, stopped at a red light? Sniff. Getting home, greeting our puppies? Sniff. You get the idea. The thing is… I wasn’t crazy for Lola. So, I moved on.
On my next shopping trip, I really went for it — I must have smelled over 15 perfumes that day! (They had to give me the coffee beans quite a few times.) Ones that I tried included Beyonce’s new perfume, “Heat”, which was nice, but not really my style.
And Burberry “Summer”, which I thought would be a slam dunk, considering I wore Burberry in college.
And Emporio Armani’s “She”.

Despite the odd packaging, I liked “She” the best, so I did my sniff test. It originally smelled awesome, so I purchased it. But, on the way home… you know the drill. I sniffed my arm, and I couldn’t quite place my finger on it… but it reminded me of something. Suddenly, it hit me — it reminded me of the perfume I wore in 6th grade. Perhaps you’ve heard of it?
Yep, Love’s “Baby Soft”. It was probably just the way it mixed with my body chemistry, but… once I got Baby Soft into my head, I couldn’t think of anything but forgetting my locker combination and long division. So, I went back for round 3 of perfume shopping.
Luckily, the third round was a success! Now, keep in mind that I don’t usually pick a perfume because of a designer. If it smells good, I’ll buy it, regardless of the name on the box. So, when I was smelling perfumes, I randomly picked one up off the counter and did the sniff test. I liked it! I sprayed a little on my arm and performed the sniff test again. Still good! I wandered around to a different department in the store, still completing my research. It was good each and every time. I walked back to the counter to purchase a bottle, and that’s when I realized the who the designer of my wedding day perfume was. Ladies, meet “Siren”, by Paris Hilton:
I was surprised, since I’m not really a Paris Hilton fan. And let’s not really talk about the grandma-esque quality that the bottle conveys. But, I loved the way it smelled, so I purchased a bottle. In her defense, the woman has sold a TON of perfumes and has been quite successful, so she knows what she’s doing (in this arena, at least). So, although I never thought I’d say this, Paris, I salute you.
Did you choose a signature scent for your wedding day, or are you wearing an old favorite?
