About Mrs. Lobster

Envelope Liners Are Not Scary

April 23rd, 2010 @ 9:08 am by Mrs. Lobster

I am not DIY-ing this wedding. I am not crafty at all. I can’t cut straight lines nor glue things without them ending up on my elbows or on my face instead. But this was one detail that sounded easy enough to try (that ironically requires cutting straight lines and gluing things).

Here are the liners I ended up choosing for our Save the Dates:

Paper Source’s Yuzen Blue White Swirls & Text Paper in Chartreuse

I could fit 12 liners on each 25 1/2″ x 19″ sheet of the Yuzen Blue and 2 on each the 8.5″x11″ Chartreuse text paper.

Lining envelopes adds a detail with SHAZAM power (um, for those guests who don’t tear open their envelopes with their bare hands like I do sometimes. Guilty.). I used Miss Hamster’s tutorial to get through it.

Miss Hamster’s Envelope Liner Tutorial

The hardest part for me was making the liner template. Without that, obviously you can’t make envelope liners. Googling found me some templates I could *buy* like the one from Paper Source but I wanted it freesies.

I found a template for customized liners Envelopperinc.com which I copied image and pasted into my trusty PowerPoint. The image itself had A6 proportions but the image was not the correct size so I had to resize it (Right click, Format Picture, Size to 6.5″ length, it Autosizes the width).

Screenshot of my template

Note that the template spills off the slide. That’s because I decided I didn’t need liners that went the length of the envelope. You can’t see it and it saves paper. Of course it’s easier to use if it is the right size but this way I was making 2 liners per 8″x11″ sheet v. just one.

Supplies needed

In Miss Hamster’s tutorial, she didn’t mention this but if you need a rounded corner for the liner, just cut it regular as a triangle and use a corner rounder to get that perfect curve without having to try to cut one.

See? Minimal mess and doable even with a crazy dog in the room

The final product

It turns out that envelope liners = not so scary. And I love how the colors pop out against the bright white envelopes. I’d recommend you give it a try - you just need a large surface and some good scissors and a template.

Have you tried envelope liners yet? Did any of your scary DIY projects turn out to be not so bad?

I did envelope liners too! I used heavy duty Hallmark wrapping paper and it worked great! I little color and pop makes a huge difference! Not so scary but very time consuming!

I may make my own liners for our rehearsal dinner invitations. It doesn’t sound so so scary!

I’m still slightly intimidated by this, but yours look great and is tempting me to do it for my invitation envelopes!

Corner rounder = brilliant. Wish I’d thought about that when I agonized over cutting that stupid rounded point perfectly!

I DIYed invitation envelope liners from huge sheets of the yuzen paper from Paper-source, too! A lot of cutting, but totally worth it — I’ve been getting compliments!

I just prototyped my rehearsal dinner invites, and I just went the easy way and got Paper-source pre-cut A2 liners, since I was using Paper-source pointy flap envelopes. =)

Those liners turned out great! They really give your envelopes an extra pop. I also love little Buddy running around with his cone on. Sad, but adorable!

@jingle96: yes definitely takes time w/all that cutting. just make sure to have some good tv in the background!
@sunnydebs: @Miss Seashell: @alivoo01: do it do it do it! I cannot repeat how soooo not crafty I am and this turned out ok. Just get the right paper (thin is easier to work with), the template, and a corner rounder if you need one :)
@Miss Sewing: I’ve heard wrapping paper works really well - may try some of that for the invites!
@Miss Trail Mix: Oh, TM, you know me so well.
@Miss Guinea Pig: Lol. It took me a few weirdly cut corners before I figured it out. Really. Lifesaver.

@grass: LOL. I hope my success has inspired you! Good luck w/the liners this weekend!
@Mrs. Pug: It’s a soft cone. He doesn’t mind it except it makes it hard to reach his toys. But good for catching crumbs from his treats.

Well done Lobster, that looks great! Won’t be going Paper Source, boo hiss, they want $83 to post a $8 paper swatch book to Ireland. Yep, no mistake. Boohoo!

I did envelope liners. I used an a7 envelope, and was able to cut 5.5inch squares and just round one corner with my corner rounder. They covered just enough to not show, unless somebody really opens it up and looks that it’s not completely covered.

yours look great. i’ve done liners for stationary that i made for my mister’s mom for christmas but i’m still undecided on whether or not i’ll be doing it for our wedding invites. i use a letter opener so i’d most likely wouldn’t get the full experience from the liners
