Registry Schizophrenia

April 23rd, 2010 @ 2:02 pm by Mrs. Trail Mix

If the folks over at Pottery Barn and Williams Sonoma were keeping a close watch on our registry item list, they might think I was, well, a lil’ bit crazy.

Let me explain: I keep going back and forth regarding how I feel about our registry. Way way back in the beginning (of time?) we were not going to have a registry. No, we said, we’d love to get creative, thoughtful presents that our guests took the time to really think through and that would reflect us as a couple.

But with an engagement party looming, FMIL Trail Mix received several inquiries to our registry whereabouts and we feared the dreaded “kitschy” presents that might come our way without a registry, so we caved to the pressure. Fine, we said, we’ll do a limited registry with just a few things we really need. With our limited space in our miniscule studio, we have no room for extra “stuff”.

But then we went to the these stores, got that handy-dandy scanner gun and, folks, it was game over (or game on, depending on how you look at it).

We definitely had some fun registering for lots of things that somehow were absolutely “necessary”. Like an ice cream maker. Which we actually got and which, by the way, totally freakin’ rocks. But a kitchen staple? Not so much.

However, once the engagement party was over (from which we received lots of lovely gifts off the registry!) I kind of went a little bit psycho about the whole thing.

You see this vase set?

I’ve taken it on and off our registry at Pottery Barn no less than three times! It’s like every other week, I completely change my mind. First, there were lots of items; then the next week I decided we didn’t want “stuff” and took more than the half the things off of it. Then a few weeks later, I was browsing through the websites late at night and added a bunch more things. Then I went back and took some of them off. It’s been a vicious cycle.

Ultimately, I have pared it down some from its original state and added a few big ticket items on there because truthfully, that’s what we really could use (both our couch and our bed are thrice handed-down from friends-of-friends).

I think it’s safe to say between the my registry stalking and adding/removing items, I’m pretty sure both Pottery Barn and Williams Sonoma are ready for me to be married already (as am I!), just to get rid of my crazy registry wheelings and dealings.

Has anyone else flip-flopped over what’s on their registry? Do you stalk your registry like I do?

I made a decision today not to do it anymore! We have an Amazon registry and I was going on it a lot and adding and removing things all the time, but now that we sent out invitations, I just want to leave it alone. I peeked a few days ago and noticed a couple things had been purchased, and it made me realize, I want to be as surprised as I can be! Thank you for the post, it made me feel a little less crazy!

As a guest, I really like to have options. So I say, keep all the items on! It isn’t like you are going to be living in a studio forever - you will eventually have more space, and it will be nice to have beautiful items you love to help decorate it! My mom still cherishes many of the beautiful items she was given when she got married, and they didn’t have a lot of space when they started out either. She has encouraged me not to limit our items to what we necessarily need or can use right this second because of that. Just another perspective!

I’m totally schizo too. I’ve added and deleted items on several occasions. It’s funny when you’re having those moments when you’re thinking……”Oh I totally need a cow shaped cream holder” which by the way I’m keeping on the registry!

Omg, I waffled over whether or not to get an ice cream maker 3 summers ago, and I am _so glad_ I finally did it! That thing makes pure joy! I know it’s almost a cliche to laugh about how people register for ice cream makers but then never use them, and for me it couldn’t be further from the truth!

You’re too cute!
Be warned: a friend of mine was the same way, but she said it didn’t end after the wedding - she just started returning things and got crazy with store credit!

I haven’t but I kep the list limited. We don’t really need a lot of things and only have room for so many things. We added enough but certainly there won’t be enough on our registry for every person. The way I see it, if you waited at the last minute, then the best alternative is cash. I’m really hoping no one goes outside of the box they waited too long. As bad as it sounds, anything that can’t be used will be returned. I’m not one for holding onto things that just take up space…

I, too am guilty of being a registry stalker - I keep adding a comforter and the matching sheets, and the matching decorative pillows, and then taking them off, then adding them back on…. you know the deal. I’m sure Macys thinks we’re schizo too! You’re in good company! : )

I am guilty of the same. I had sworn to leave it alone and stay off the registry websites but the temptation is just too great when I’m bored at work.

i definitely made continuous changes to our registry throughout several months. there’s still stuff on there i feel like i could take off (and i’m married already), but i don’t want to regret it and not get the 10% discount!

YES! About every other weekend I’m going through our registries. How many sets of those sheets do I want? Do I want this spoon or that spoon? Do I really really NEED those cute little (fill in the blanks)? I’m going to leave it alone once the actual gift giving begins (unless something has to be deleted) so my guests don’t “know” I’m psycho. =-)

We are not quite to the registry stage yet but I know myself….and I’m pretty certain I’ll be an unstoppable registry changer…and don’t get me started on the registry stalking…I always snoop for presents!! I do hope I can hold back a little b/c like evryone else - I do want to be as surprised as possible :)

Yup, that totally sounds like me. Our problem will be that we are registering for a lot of stuff that might be considered seasonal. But we can’t help it, ’cause it’s what we want! So I’m just crossing my fingers that it will last long enough for a least the shower :)

I was continually looking at mine, but finally had to hush myself on it. I finally checked yesterday and found that out of all 3 we only had two items that went out and I replaced them wiht other stuff. Unfortunately one of them was a really cool cream whipper that I had to replace with the aluminum version instead of steel, but other than that I’ve been able to keep from putting items on and taking them off for the most part.

We get an email from Honeyfund saying when people bought/promised to buy (you can “pledge” to buy something). We just got an early present, and it was better than Christmas.

i definitely enjoy options as a guest because i want to be just as excited to give a gift as you’ll be receiving it. it really sucks to get there and see only a few things, most of which are out my budget, and then lazily slapping together a random assortment of the little items. kind of a real bummer

As a recent bride and an employee at Pottery Barn, I say leave the items that you are continuously second guessing on your registry!! Even if you do get the items and you decide that they are off the wall and not useful, you can return them and receive the price that was paid. Williams Sonoma owns Pottery Barn and when something is purchased off the registry, the gift givers information is recorded so we have something other then the receipt to refer back to for credit. Also, gift cards and merchandise credits can be redeemed at EITHER store!! I always tell the couples coming in to register to register for whatever may catch their eye because in the end, YOU have the final call on what you really need and what you can “trade in” for something more useful or needed that you may have received!

I’m sure that you chose the title of this host with no intended harm. However when you title a post with Schizophrenia and comment how the employees though you were crazy, I find it offensive. As the daughter of a women suffering from the serious disease of schizophrenia I didn’t appreciate the lighthearted way you used the word.

This was by no means meant to be a mean or judgmental comment.
