About Mrs. Seashell

Yeah, I’m Obsessed

April 26th, 2010 @ 2:57 pm by Mrs. Seashell

… with our wedding photographer. Literally. Truly, madly, hopelessly obsessed. I looooooove her.

It all started in 2006. A girl in my sorority (a few pledge classes behind me whom I barely knew) got married and posted a link to her wedding slideshow on Facebook. It was phenomenal. Being a girl who never cries, I knew something was up when the photos left me teary-eyed. Next, I found the link to the photographer’s blog and took a peek from time to time. The talent behind the camera was Carmen Nauseef from Blink of an Eye Photography.

Time passed, and as it became more clear to me that my then-boyfriend now-fiance and I were heading toward marriage, I decided that I didn’t just want Carmen to photograph our wedding I had to have her photograph the wedding.

Of course, I looked at other vendors, and it’s probably worth mentioning that she’s located in Dayton, Ohio. (We live in Chicago and the wedding is being held in Rhode Island. Oopsies.)

I sent along an email asking if she was willing to travel. She was more than willing, and aside from covering travel expenses her prices were the same as the ordinarily would be. I shared Carmen’s blog with my parents and gave them her pricing information as they were the ones paying for the photography. Our agreement was this: my parents believed that talented photographers exist in the Boston/Providence area, so if my heart was set on Carmen then I could take on her travel expenses and they would pay for the actual photography service. A perfect compromise!

So yes, I’ll gladly admit that flying a photographer to Providence (and Chicago for engagement photos) is probably a little over the top. But to me it is worth every penny. My argument is this: after all is said and done, the most tangible memory you have of your wedding day are the photographs. And moreover, I knew I would always have a lingering “what if” if I chose someone else.

What was your most extravagant wedding decision? Do you have a vendor you’re hopelessly obsessed with?

Agreed! Photography was also our most extravagant wedding decision. Good thing I didn’t have to throw a terrible two’s temper tantrum & everyone was also on board in the photog category ;)

It’s our photographer for me, too! I check her blog almost daily, even though she only posts once or twice a week. There was a photographer that I’d wanted that lives in NC (we live in CA) that I knew we could never afford, but I found myself continually comparing everyone I found in our area to him. Then I found Kate and I was jumping out of my skin I was so excited. She’s like a female version of him.. and LOCAL! I booked her without even meeting her.. our first time will be for our e-shoot at the end of May. I couldn’t be happier with my choice, though.

http://www.khpblog.com/ is her blog… check out her most recent engagement session- if our pics turn out even halfway similar I will be over the moon. SO dreamy!

We’re flying our photog from Boston to San Diego….I just had a hard time finding anyone else with her eye for the same price. We ended up getting a lot more hours of photography than if we’d gone with someone from LA for the same price, even considering the airfare! :)

Her website isn’t currently loading for me but I’m sure she takes incredible photos for you to be flying her to Rhode Island for your wedding!

I thought I was going to get off cheap on photography but then I started looking around and realizing the difference a great photographer makes…and now, unfortunately, we are convinced we must shell out for one. But that isn’t even our most expensive expenditure…my dress costs probably twice s much as we will pay for our photog!

My most extravagant, WAY-over-what’s-necessary wedding thing was ceremony music. My family has been involved in a ton of Gilbert and Sullivan productions. My husband’s name starts with G, and the G&S mnemonic was the only think stopping my dad from calling him Jeff. Put it all together and that means I need G&S music at the ceremony, right?

I had this conversation with about six different ensembles:

Them: Okay, so you want the music you’re supplying during the ceremony, and then we’ll do our normal book for half an hour of pre-service music.
Me: No, I’m supplying everything. It’s about 45 minutes of music.
Them: … Uh…

So when I found a group that didn’t go ballistic at the thought of 45 minutes of new music–actually they sounded really excited about it–I was willing to pay anything they asked for.

This post couldn’t have come at a better time! Since shortly before we were engaged, I was totally obsessed with a photographer’s website. I added it to my google reader and felt their pics could not at all compare to others in the area. I drooled over every photo on their blog! When we got their pricing packages, they were def more expensive than the norm, and my Mom (who is not paying for photography, but who is a great sounding board) was horrified! She talked us out of jumping into the decision and we researched some talented local photographers. Even though some of them had some awesome shots, they just couldn’t compare to my dream photographer. In the end, we decided to bite the bullet and go with them b/c photos are so very important to me. So, I TOTALLY relate to your post :-)

There ARE very talented photographers in the RI area, and that is also our splurge. And coincidentally enough, we’re using Olivia Wilcox from…

wait for it…

I’m flying my photographer from New Brunswick, Canada to Wisconsin for our wedding. Fortunately for us, we’re taking care of her and her husband’s travel expenses and accommodations and she’s taking our pictures for free! Since we have airmiles for their flights, it’s costing us way less to have her in Wisconsin than it would if we had bought a wedding package from her in New Brunswick!

Way to go for what you want! I’m sure the splurge will be totally worth it to get the style and quality of photos that you’ve been drooling over for years!

I totally get the photog obsession! We actually picked our wedding date based on the dates they had available - only 2 - July 3 or August 14! Needless to say we went with the non-holiday weekend! Their (husband and wife) style is much like your photographer. I can’t wait for our eshoot and to see how your pictures turn out! You can check out our photogs at http://www.nickelcitystudios.com/
