Mrs. Guinea Pig's Picture
Mrs. Guinea Pig, Baltimore, MD Age and Occupation: 26, PhD student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Operations Director at a non-profit Engagement Date: December 25, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: The Chesapeake Bay Beach Club About Me: I'm a tomboy science nerd whose girly side has made a startling appearance thanks to wedding planning! I love to bake, knit and sew but I also ride a motorcycle (that Mr. Guinea Pig wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole). We live with our three crazy cats and love to read, travel, watch movies, and do home improvement projects together! My parents/family are Canadian but I'm definitely American, although I've lived in 5 different countries, 6 different states, and speak Russian fluently. Mr. GP and I met online (did I mention I'm a scientist?) and had a whirlwind romance - now we can't wait to get married & celebrate with all our friends and family in a blue and yellow waterfront affair!
About Mrs. Guinea Pig

Two weeks after Mr. Guinea Pig and I get married, my parents will celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary. They’ve been pretty awesome role models for me, both as individuals and in terms of marriage, and I’ve always admired their ability to overcome whatever obstacles are thrown their way, together.

35 years ago, my parents got all gussied up and went through the tradition Mr. GP and I are about to embark on.

(Mom and Dad Guinea Pig, 35 years ago - they look SO happy! Also, Dad GP looked a lot like Abraham Lincoln :D )

See Mom GP’s beautiful all-lace dress? I’m pretty thrilled to say that I get to carry a piece of it with me on my wedding day!

Luckily, Mom GP saved her dress for many years until one day they had a baby (me!) and turned that lovely dress into a lace christening gown. The lace gown goes over a long-sleeved cotton overlay, and since then has been used each time a baby is born in the family - baby’s initials are then embroidered on the sleeve in either pink or blue thread!

(my Aunt with her grandson in the christening gown (which makes him my first cousin once removed?))

Because the whole dress wasn’t needed to make the christening gown, Mom GP had some odds and ends of the lace left over, which is how I got this piece in my hands:

(a close-up of the lace piece on a black background)

As soon as I knew that Mom GP had extra lace from her dress, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it. I had always heard of bouquets with things like charms or lockets tied around them in honor/remembrance of someone, but once I saw bouquet inspiration photos like this:

(a meaningful handkerchief wrapped around the bouquet, source)

and this,

(Black lace, ooh la la! source)

I knew I wanted to do something like Mrs. Tiramisu did with her bouquet (she used antique lace from her grandmother’s wedding gown as a bouquet wrap):

(Love this bouquet, Source)

I am really excited to carry a piece of my mom’s dress with me all day - I feel like the lessons my parents’ marriage have taught me and the wonderful example they have set are symbolized in this little piece of their own wedding. Knowing that I will have that with me on the day brings me such happiness, and I love that even though it will be just my dad walking me down the aisle, I sort of get to bring along a bit of my mom, too. Hopefully some kind of good vibes transferal will occur, and the lace that set my parents off on their happy journey many years ago will bring Mr. GP and me that many years (and more!) of happiness together.

Are you incorporating anything sentimental from your family into your day? What are you using to wrap your bouquet?

My parents 40th anniversary is 11 days after my wedding. :) I love your idea, it is such a great way to incorporate something sentimental. My grandmother wore a cameo broach on her wedding dress and I’m using the same cameo to pin to my bouquet.

I love that your mom’s wedding gown has been used for more than one occasion! My parents celebrated their 35th anniversary one week before our wedding. Your parent’s wedding photo has so many similarities to my parents’ and how they looked on their wedding day. Their attire was nearly identical in the styles. Pretty neat!

I’m using some of my mom’s wedding dress lace for a bouquet wrap and also putting a strip around the ring pillow.

I’m using the lace and fabric from my mom’s train as a bouquet wrap too. I’m really excited, although I feel really bad cutting into it! Maybe we can also use it for a Christening gown one day.

Y’ever see the little baptism bonnets made out of hankies? With the little poem attached suggesting you snip out the four stitches holding it in bonnet shape and use the hankie at your wedding?

Yeah, I had one of those. And when I got married in Massachusetts, it was in Maryland, in a storage locker, in a cedar chest, which was under a table. Oops. Actually I think there was a dollhouse on top of that, too.

So moments before the ceremony, the groom’s godmother comes in kind of apologetically, with his baptism bonnet, wondering if maybe I would be willing to carry it or something. I was like, awesome! and wrapped it around my bouquet. Done.

I missed what happened next, because, you know, wedding stuff, right? But apparently the godmother and the MOG got all crazy weepy about how great I was, honoring his childhood and whatnot.

I like it when I accidentally do something awesome. I should do that more often.

I’ve been going back and forth on how to incorporate something like this. I love the lace from your Mom’s dress…it will be just lovely on your bouquet!

I love this idea too and that’s a great pic! My parents 34th anniversary is a few weeks before the wedding so we’re going to play their first dance song for them at the reception. I also think I’ll use some leftover fabric from my dress to wrap around my bouquet. We’re displaying family wedding photos and I may wear my grandmother’s wedding band as my something old.

That’s so sweet! I think I’ll be carrying a cameo necklace on my bouquet that has been passed down in my FMIL’s family!

That is such a sweet tradition and a special way to honor your family! I’ll be incorporating my mom’s dress at my wedding too. I’m going to post about it though, so I won’t reveal here!
