Mrs. Taco, San Francisco Age and Occupation: 29, writer/editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 37, editor Engagement Date: May 13, 2009 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: The Green Room at the War Memorial Veterans Building About Me: I like laughing and talking with good friends over good food and good drink, be it wine, cocktail, or brew. I write and edit things for fun and profit, but I rarely "write" these days without a keyboard and high-speed internets. Favorites include Mr. Taco, my Boston terrier, San Francisco, getting out of town, and the Roaring ’20s. I was kind-of planning a wedding since roughly 2006, when I discovered "Whose Wedding Is It Anyway?" on the WE channel. I ran and didn't look back with a theme I called "urban vintage," and it culminated in the most magical day a taco could ask for.

Tales of the Playlist

April 27th, 2010 @ 6:21 pm by Mrs. Taco

I actively dislike most wedding DJs, their lights, and their radio voices, so it was easy to nix that from the plans. Therefore, that meant we had to devote time to creating playlists for the ceremony, ambient dinner hour, and 3-4 hours of laptop dancing. DIY DJ, if you will.

We agree on a lot, musically, so some of it was painless. The standard Bridal Chorus was agreed upon quickly, and the recessional, bridesmaid processional, and first-dance choices were easy. So was much of the ambient music. But you should have seen the spreadsheet once comments flew back and forth on the party-party song choices.

Mr. Taco: “If we want to have songs that I refuse to ‘dance’ to, yes.”

(Re: the allegedly un-danceable but surefire crowd-pleaser  Livin’ on a Prayer by Bon Jovi)

Ms. Taco: “I don’t know if you can dance-dance to that.”

(Re:  Genius of Love by Tom Tom Club. This statement was met by scoffs and complaints about the damn kids these days. I really like this song, in other settings, in my defense)

Ms. Taco: “It’s a song about putting on your boogie shoes, how can you not dance to that??”

(Re: the also allegedly un-danceable Boogie Shoes by KC and the Sunshine Band)

Both of us: “NO ONE LIKES THAT SONG!?”

Etc.

I think we should both acknowledge that we’re in for some surprises. Sitting at home on the computer, I would have been the first to chop the Gin Blossoms’ “Hey Jealousy” off the list. But we just attended a wedding where that song got everyone, including me, moving and singing along in about five seconds. (Side note: how awesomely ’90s is that video?)

We recently managed to trim the list down to a very manageable few hours of (we think) kick ass music with a little of this, and a little of that, and I’m interested to see what’s a hit and what’s not.

Who else has Tales of the Playlist?

You can totally dance to Livin’ on a Prayer. Or at least jump up and down and shout like you’re at karaoke. :)

You can most certainly dance to Boogie Shoes. I love disco tracks like that, but we’ll see if any of them make it into our wedding. I have a feeling our wedding will be lots of late 80s and all 90’s tracks because it’s the music of our adolescence. We haven’t had our formal meeting with the DJ but I trust he’ll keep everyone on their feet and saying “I haven’t heard this song in FOREVER!”

Oh, man….we’re having such a hard time with playlist…What won’t offend our grandparents? What will make people dance? What can we play after the band finishes that won’t bring down the evening?

We’ve decided that we must have:
Neil Diamond- Sweet Caroline
Don’t Stop Believin’- Journey
and some Kanye

Yeah, that’s as far as we’ve gotten… Good luck!

HAha. Mr. A has had zero part in our playlist. Although I have yet to start it.

We are meeting with our DJ next week to figure this out. Honestly, I haven’t really given it a second thought compared to the rest of the wedding, but…now I am starting to panic. Livin’ on a Prayer is definitely danceable…I’ve done it…it involves lots of jumping and yelling, haha.

We are leaving this us to a DJ because we are way too different musically to survive this one. :)

Wow, I love this post, because I’m having some of the same struggles…but in a different way.
I want to make a playlist. I want to know exactly what will be played at our wedding, so that we don’t get stuck with “Love Shack” or any James Taylor (my least favorites). This kind of removes the need for a deejay - plus, it would save us money!
My fiance, on the other hand, has a big Italian family who are already a little upset that there won’t be alcohol at the wedding. He wants there to be a deejay so that people actually get up and dance (sans alcohol). I left it up to him…
I’ve heard, though, that the wedding follows the bride, so if I’m up there dancing, everyone else will be! If we don’t have a deejay, I hope this applies!

Mr. Lobster loves to dance. I’m almost scared to start thinking about the playlist he’ll want!

We’re putting in a lot of fast, danceable songs, some mellow songs, and a little bit of country in our playlist.

Ha, THANK you for backing me up on Livin’ on a Prayer. You can’t “dance” to it, but jumping up and down? Check.

@Miss Argyle: Don’t let him touch it! ;)

@clarebee: It’s a great song, surely. It actually did make it on the list, in the end ;)

Hahaha. Love the conversation play-by-play. I played 3 “walking in to the reception” songs for Mr. Hamster and he fell asleep after the first one. Needless to say, we won’t be using that one. Sigh.

In Jersey, I’m not sure if it counts as a real wedding without Livin’ on a Prayer. There might be a law.

hello, I am trying to come up with a playlist right now myself. My MoH is in charge of putting them together–but I would like to help give her a bit better direction. Does anyone still have a playlist that they did? A list of all the songs you chose to use? I would love to see it. Feel free to email me at:
