The First Dance Indecision

April 27th, 2010 @ 1:21 pm by Mrs. Dolphin

Well, I have been listening to TONS of songs today. Mostly because Mr. Dolphin is as work, and I miss him (I know… I’m such a sap!). Our first dance song for our wedding has changed quite a few times and I think it is about to change again—there are just so many songs that Mr. Dolphin and I listen to, connect to, and love.

The First Dance Indecision : wedding dance gainesville First Dance Brides First-Dance-Brides

Sunny MOH, Seminole Bridesmaid and Gator Bridesmaid dancing their first dances with their husbands. I had to include this. Aren’t they all such beautiful brides?!

The first song Mr. Dolphin and I ever chose for our first dance was “I’m Your’s” by Jason Mraz. It is just so sweet, mellow and chill, everything Mr. Dolphin and I ♥. We will still be playing the song at our wedding for sure… and it still isn’t completely out of the running.

Then it changed to “Lucky” by Jason Mraz ft. Colbie Calliat. The two voices are incredibly sweet talking about how they are in love with their best friend, and how they will wait for each other. It’s just so sweet and mellow. So… for the past 5 months this has been our first dance song.

Then Mr. Dolphin had to go and buy a new album by Owl City. I have to say it wasn’t instant love at first listen. I initially thought the music was sappy, emo, and whiny, three things I don’t like. But, Mr. Dolphin insisted it was great music, so we listened to the CD for a few weeks. Yeah… now I LOVE Owl City. Funny how that happens.

Without further ado, here is the song we are considering switching our first dance song to. Listen and enjoy! :)

Owl City “Vanilla Twilight” - it’s so sweet and dreamy!

I think it’s the tone of the music and the lyrics that really get to me… plus, Mr. Dolphin likes it, which is always a plus! We’re still contemplating this one. What do y’all think??

Mr. D and I are currently taking dance lessons and this song become very hard to dance to… so we have kept with the “I’m Yours” song. Dance lessons are going great… hoping we can put it all together for our first dance in 3 weeks!!

I love “Lucky” and actually my cousin co-wrote it with Colbie Colliat & Jason Mraz and won a Grammy for it! He’s the lead singer in the band for my wedding and that’s probably our first dance song too! I love it!

I considered both Lucky & I’m Yours (I say “I” because the Mister was no where near that decision at the time). But I really wanted him to love the song and not just like it, so we went with Wagon Wheel by Old Crow Medicine Show. Sure it talks about hitching a ride with a trucker & and smoking but it’s one of his favorite bands. I think having an off-beat song makes it that much more special!

thats a great song and i’m personally a huge fan… my only concern would be doing somthing popular now vs timeless. Will you still love this song in ten years?

We are doing Lucky but I absolutely love I’m Yours! I agree about the popular vs. timeless thought from above as well. Musical tastes change all the time but there are always those certain songs that just stick out.

Aww, I am glad you chose I’m Yours. I think that’s what Mrs. Piglet danced to, and I heart her first dance. I agree with other posters that I think I’m Yours might end up being a little more classic, even though it’s still modern. But, I also get very tired of Owl City…and love both the Jason Mraz songs…so I could be biased!

I hope your lessons are going great!

My FH and I are actually debating between this song and “If my Heart was a House you’d be home” by Owl City.

LOVE this band.

I’m Yours and Lucky are both definitely going to be played at my wedding at some point (they’re too beautiful not too include!) but for our first dance we decided on “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” by Lady Antebellum. I’d never heard it before I started my song search but my FI and I just fell in love with it. Plus I love that even though they are a “country” band the typical country sound is incredibly subtle :)

We were the same! I love “I’m Yours” and it was the song our engagement :)… however we switched to Lucky for our first dance which was perfectly sweet and upbeat and meaningful.

Vanilla Twilight kind of reminds me of loved ones that have passed. I was listening to it on the way to a funeral in January, and now it’s really hard for me to get rid that connection. “I’ll miss your arms around me.. I wish you were here.. but it’s not the same without you… the silence isn’t so bad til I look at my hands and feel sad cuz the spaces between my fingers are right where yours fit perfectly… when I think of you I don’t feel so alone… as many times as I blink I’ll think of you tonight” Ok, enough. But that last line makes me super sad when I think about my dad not being there the evening of our wedding. But I love Owl City, and that’s why that cd was playing non stop for a long time in my car! But I think you made the right decision, definitely.

My music junky of a boss introduced me to Owl City back at the end of the Summer last year - and I’ve always been a fan. This is a great song, and I encourage you to use it since it’s different and a bit unexpected.

Our first dance song is one most people (at our wedding) will not have heard, but it’s one we both love. And, I love that it’s our little secret.

Hi miss gator, while i agree that the song is beautiful sounding, im not quite sure if you want those specific lyrics. I have always interpreted them to be telling a story about two people that have, sadly, been separated. The character in the song laments the loss of the loved one, but by the final verse is details how the character has finally been able to be move on and be happy despite the loss. Just my thoughts!
