About Mrs. Octopus

Recently, my groom and I embarked on the element of wedding planning that I am probably more excited about than anything else: cake tastings.

This is exactly how I would go about the tastings if Mr. O didn’t rein me in. (Source)

I have a monster sweet tooth and absolutely no self-restraint when it comes to desserts. A few weeks ago, at my work-study job, we celebrated a birthday with cupcakes from an extremely addictive nearby cupcake shop. I proceeded to basically unhinge my jaw like a python and swallow my entire cupcake in two giant bites, despite the fact that everyone else was being really dainty and ladylike, eating their cupcakes with forks (!!) and taking cute little nibbles. So that was embarrassing, but it’s also an indicator of how much I REALLY REALLY LOVE DESSERT. Having a cake that reaches food-coma levels of deliciousness is important to me.

I’ll report back with the results of the tastings later, but first, I wanted to share my ideas for what I’d like our cake to look like. As I’ve browsed around, looking at pictures, I’ve realized that while I appreciate the artistry and the aesthetic appeal of beautiful cakes like this…

… that’s not really what we’re looking for. For lack of a better word, I love cakes that look really, really cake-y. Cakes that are covered with frosting, not fondant, and look more Duncan Hines than Sylvia Weinstock. Cakes that make you think, ‘wow, that looks delicious!’ instead of, ‘oh, how beautiful!’

I’m thinking something like this:

Yummmm. Don’t you just want to sink a fork into a cake like that? They look so fresh-baked! I also like the idea of sticking with the “edible-looking” theme and decorating the cake with fruit, instead of flowers or ribbons or whatnot.

Strawberries, blackberries, and grapes would look tasty AND stick to the color scheme! Win!

What look did you go for in your wedding cake?

We did the SAME line of thinking on the cake! We picked a super delicious strawberry torte with yellow cake, custard, fresh strawberries and fluffy whipped frosting! We LOVED it so much when we went for our tasting that we bought an 8″ cake on the spot to take home to our families! If you’re thinking fresh fruit, I highly recommend it.

We made those rustic natural wood cake stands that you see on a lot of the blogs, so that became the decor instead of the cake.

We’re with you- we want “OOO that looks delicious” instead of the artsy fondant creations that are pretty, but not so appetizing. LOL We figure if someone’s finger winds up in the frosting before we even cut it, we did good! =)

We went with the pretty factor, but hopefully once the guests take a bite into our cake they’ll devour it since it’s soooo delicious! haha!

@MJogan: My biggest fear is Mr. d’s mother sticking a finger in our wedding cake, so I’m the complete opposite, lol! She’s scarred me for life by making whoever’s birthday it is a homemade cake with a huge lick of frosting taken out EVERY single time!

I totally agree on the cake-y looking cakes. Other are beautiful but I want something, if I were having cake (doing pie), that was down home baked deliciousness! Love the idea of using just fruits. Edible :) I’d make sure I got a piece with more fruit than the others for sure!

I totally agree that cake-y looking cakes are way more appealing than pretty ones!

@dddd89: Oh NO! I was thinking more like my 9 year old sister or our 4 year old flower girl getting into it (which wouldn’t bother me, I love kids and my FI is an “almost” pediatrician), not my MIL!! Not to mention the way our cakes will be iced, you’d never notice anyway. Maybe you should get her her own cupcake and invite her to leave her mark, diverting attention away from your beautiful wedding cake! I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you! =) Haha

That is the same thing we are looking for! Our baker didn’t believe that we wanted something like that - he was like “brides usually want something so smooth and perfect!” and made us promise to give him some photos, I think so that when it comes out looking more homemade, he can’t be held accountable if we say there is a problem. hehe. I am excited to dig in!

I made a cake that looks like that 3rd of the “delicious” ones for Easter. I love the homey, laid-back look.

This is one of the things I don’t really care about. If there was such a thing as a “wedding cheeseburger,” I would be all over that!
