About Mrs. Frog

Ladies – let’s get serious… a lot of us want a couture gown. I don’t care if you’re punk, hippie, yuppie or nerd (I fall into that last category), almost every one of us would love to find a couture gown that fits our personality and fits in our price range. The problem is that most of us simply can’t afford it… well, unless we decide to buy the dream dress and get married at a courthouse – which could be a dream come true for some but according to statistics, not most. So, the big question is, how do you score a couture dream dress within your budget? There are a few options, some that will not come as a surprise to see here and one or two that may have you cracking open a bottle of wine to celebrate. I’ve got my glass next to me, feel free to join in.

Couture Dress Minus Couture Price Part 1 : wedding phoenix wedding dress Vera Wa vera wang three dresses

Hi Vera, I love you.

Because there are quite a few options, I’ve broken this into two posts… I love creating suspense – even if it’s just in my imagination.

Couture Dress Minus Couture Price Part 1 : wedding phoenix wedding dress Monique04 Monique Trunk Show Graphic

Trunk shows. Almost everyone is familiar with a trunk show once they begin the hunt for a dress. But for any newbies that are starting their searches, basically, the designer sends a representative to the store (or sometimes will attend themselves) for a few select days – typically over a weekend. During that time, they bring dresses that are normally not samples available at that store – they are always available for purchase through the store since the designer is carried there but they don’t always have every sample of every dress that is made in stock. It gives you an opportunity to try on many dresses by one designer. If you decide to purchase during a trunk show, you will get a discount – usually between 10-20% (negotiate, negotiate, negotiate - perhaps you can get a complimentary veil or money off of your alterations—it never hurts to ask) and if there are any changes that you’d like made to the gown, it’s a great time to ask about them because a designer rep is there and can tell you what can and cannot be done.

Couture Dress Minus Couture Price Part 1 : wedding phoenix wedding dress Sample Sample sales

Sample sales. Sample sales are probably the most logical choice for finding a nice dress at a good discount. You aren’t guaranteed to find a “couture” dress at a sample sale but depending on where you go, there’s a chance. Typically these dresses are a bit worn-in and may need to be cleaned/repaired but overall, if you can find one you love, you’ll get it for cheaper than it was originally priced and cheaper than it would be at a trunk sale. Score!

Couture Dress Minus Couture Price Part 1 : wedding phoenix wedding dress Running01 running of brides

(source)

Running of the Brides. Okay, if you live east of the Mississippi, you are probably familiar with this term and the insanity that can ensue when one of these events takes place… you may also remember Mrs. Toucan’s post on her experience. Filene’s Basement has sales at different locations where dresses are marked extremely low. Here’s the thing: unlike a sample sale where you will have a bit more control and organization, this is more of a cattle call… but a very pretty cattle call. :) Girls usually arrive in teams, stake a place within the store and grab armfuls of dresses at a time, hoping to find one that might be a fit. I’ve heard of girls getting VERY lucky and I’ve heard of girls buying dresses only to sell them (or try to sell them) later after realizing it was an affordable, impulse purchase. So, if you are looking for a very specific type of dress, you may not have a lot of luck here – but if you are looking for a common silhouette or neckline or fabric, etc. then you could end up really getting an incredible deal. Oh, I should mention… brides and their “teams” begin camping out the night before these sales – you’ve been warned.

Find an incredible seamstress. Now this is for those not afraid of taking a risk. If you find a dream dress that is completely out of your price range, you can try to find a way to have it made. You have to put a LOT of trust in your seamstress and cross your fingers that the dress will turn out the way you hope for. The good part of this option is that you have a say in pretty much every part of the process. You can help with picking out the fabric, you can add straps, take away beading, pretty much make the dress exactly what you want. This will easily be much cheaper than buying a couture gown and you could end up with a similar version or something you love even more. My only advice here would be to research, research, research before you book your seamstress. Ask for testimonials, photos and recommendations to make sure you find someone that will understand your vision and be able to accomplish it.

And I hate to do this but I have to save my favorite and most secret tip for the next post… don’t hate me. :)

Did you go one of these routes? How did you find your dress?

I went the “once wed” route and I am SO GLAD that I did! It meant that I got my dream dress in a more affordable way.

I found my dream couture Ulla Maija gown at the Brides Against Breast cancer dress sale. When I tried the dress on at the sale, I knew it was the one. I left feeling wonderful because I found THE ONE and the money was going to a good cause.

I’m probably the only one who thinks couture gowns are just too much — definitely not my style. I don’t like all that frou-frou.

I went to a “hole in the wall” mom and pop shop and got my dress for about the same price as a used one. Now I can resell it and recoup most of that money.

I don’t want a couture gown, never have, never will. They are very pretty and I respect the design and craftsperson ship, but I’m one lady who doesn’t want a couture gown. The most I could ever, ever spend on a wedding dress would be around eight hundred dollars, and that’s IF I received a sudden windfall of cash. So couture doesn’t cut it for me! The wedding dress I bought came from a ‘fifty percent off last season’ sale at a Mom and Pop store, and I don’t even know the designer. I think I spent more on my prom dress, to be honest. I dream of sweet cotton sundresses and vintage tea length beauties.

J. Crew bride, wooo! Open a credit card on the day you buy, and that sucker will be 10% off. If you’re a student or a teacher, that’s another 15% off.

My SHOES cost almost as much as my dress, and you’d never know, it doesn’t feel cheap — the alterations seamstress ooh’d and aah’d over the fabric, and she’s been altering wedding gowns for 35 years! Score!

*Obviously, not couture — but surprisingly high quality at surprisingly affordable prices!

I bought a Marchesa dress of ebay heavily discounted. It’s gorgeous and although it’s ivory and ethereal it wasn’t a wedding gown initially. I’d recommend looking on ebay or at department stores for couture brands that have white or ivory gowns that can be worn as a wedding dress. It’s amazing how much pricier a dress is once they smack the term “wedding” on it.

Whew - I guess I should clarify that by couture, I didn’t mean super pricey or name brand - I meant handmade, fine materials, quality product. That doesn’t mean frilly or girly or by any of the designers mentioned in my post. But you’re right, I shouldn’t make generalizations across the board - there will always be differences of opinion especially with something as personal as a wedding dress…and that’s one of the reasons I just love Weddingbee, everyone has a different point of view to share! Thanks for the reminder, ladies!

Thanks for the clarification Miss Frog! I have to be honest - none of those poofy couture dresses pictured above rang my bridal bell. I think you are correct in saying that most ladies want a well-made dress that looks very nice to them, but by no means was I (or are all brides) after a couture gown! In fact, most couture dresses just scare me lol.

Mmmmm, I wanted a couture gown and I got my dress (dunno if it’s couture or not- Claire Pettibone?) at a sample sale!

Right there with ya froggie. Wanted a “fancy” dress and knew that I just had to have one. However I do have to say that when I tried on the $15k+ dresses, I didn’t feel any sort of twinge of sadness when I said I was going to pass on them.

I went the “Mommy pleeeaaasseee” route. At this point I sort of wish we’d gone the seamstress route though. :p

The route I’m taking - if you can foot the bill upfront, or someone else like your parents can, I would suggest paying for the dress you want and plan on selling it online afterwards. And I second the trunk show idea - I got a 20% off discount.

I tried on A LOT of dresses, and then one day I saw this blog… http://www.stylemepretty.com/2009/02/07/oh-so-pretty-peonies-from-jessica-johnston-photography/... and I said, that’s the dress.

It doesn’t help that the bride is BEAUTIFUL! But anywho… love at first sight… and of course no bridal stores within a 150 mile radius had the dress to try on (long story short, mom and I had a road trip the day after Thanksgiving to Toronto - I live in Buffalo - to try on the dress), so I ended up contacting a bunch of Alvina Valenta authorized retailers, and I landed a jackpot when one of them said they were having a trunk sale and I could order for 20% off.

So my mom wanted to buy my wedding dress for me, but obviously $2,500 was a bit more than she was thinking, so I promised her I would sell it after the wedding, and she was sold too!

AND… bonus… on the stores facebook page, they had a coupon - if you bought a dress over $1,000 you could get a pair of shoes or veil up to $200 - how awesome is that… so I got my veil (almost) for free… they gave me a credit of $200 towards a veil that cost $290… I still think we made out though!

Hope my hints help someone! Biggest tip… shop around if your courageous enough… contact retailers in other states… most don’t make you pay sales tax which can save you hundreds when you’re dress is $$$$$…

Good luck Bees!
