Let Them Eat CAKE!

April 28th, 2010 @ 6:35 pm by Mrs. Dolphin

I present to you our wedding cake that I sketched up!

Let Them Eat CAKE! : wedding cake gainesville 12 1

Cake Stats: 3 white square tiers with whipped cream icing; accented with yellow bands, white pearl dots, beautiful white daisies, and our lovely custom cake toppers in our likeness.

A few weekends ago, Mr. Dolphin and I made a trip home for a cake tasting at Heavenly Cheesecake in Holly Hill, FL.

Sunny MOH had her cake made there. It was so incredibly delicious that I had TWO pieces at her wedding (which was immediately followed by a sugar high where I danced around her reception like a crazy mad woman… but that is another story!).

When Mr. Dolphin and I arrived, we were quickly seated and greeted with this:

Let Them Eat CAKE! : wedding cake gainesville 23 2

From left to right: white cream cake with strawberry filling, tropical carrot cake, and chocolate cream cake with raspberry filling

Now I must say that Mr. Dolphin is NOT an icing person, so when I saw Mr. Dolphin not only eat ALL the icing on his samples, but the icing on MINE, I knew we had a winning baker. :)

In the end we went with the tropical carrot cake (made from scratch and with pineapple! It’s what the baker calls a true labor of love… which will come to bite us in the butt on cost), and white cream cake with raspberry filling.

Let Them Eat CAKE! : wedding cake gainesville 33 3

Mr. Dolphin posing with a square cake about the same size ours will be! Hooray!

I have to say I’m SUPER excited about our cake. Our cake is going to be delicious and makes me feel incredibly fancy… okay, maybe the ’fancy’ part comes from the chic square silver cake stand we are renting for it.

Now, here comes my confession…

Mr. Dolphin and I had no idea how much our beautiful dream cake was going to cost in the end. We were really quite shocked when we were told the price. But, in retrospect we should have expected it. Not only did we pick out a more expensive icing (per Mr. Dolphin’s taste buds’ request), but we also picked out a labor intensive flavor (uh… that Tropical Carrot Cake is AMAZING) and the cake is rather large, feeding 165 people (and the layers are really thick and tall… so it could probably feed more). Why such a big cake to feed so many people, when we are only expecting 150… and possibly less? (The number now stands at 120. Eek! So much cake!)

Well… Mr. Dolphin and I already know that this tropical carrot cake is going to be a hit (heck… we wanted them to make us a cake to-go!) and we want to be ABSOLUTELY SURE we get as much tropical carrot cake as we want… hence the top of the cake will be nicely preserved for eating after our honeymoon (as suggested by the baker) or on our 1 year anniversary.

If our cake is as delicious as Sunny MOH’s cake was,  I’m sure it will be gone by the end of the night… ’cause I know I wasn’t the only person to eat two slices at her wedding!

When researching online (mostly to make myself feel better about our cake price), I found our cost per slice of cake is in the mid-range… which certainly eases my mind. {ahhh}

What was the one item you ended up splurging on for your wedding?

I’ll just go out and say it: good cakes are expensive! Ours is 5 bucks a slice, and although it is cheesecake, it is still waaaay more than I had anticipated spending. Especially when we tasted at a few high-end grocery stores where it was half the cost. But in the end, you are paying more more for better ingredients, better flavor and piece of mind that your cake will be awesome. Totally worth it!

We splurged on a seven-piece funk band! Your cake design looks great - that tropical carrot cake sounds fantastic! Better to have too much cake (is there such a thing?) than too little.

We’re splurging on the reception hall!! I love love love the country club and have always wanted to get married there! Since we’re reigning in the budget in all other aspects (except I WILL pay more for a great photog) we’re still within budget :) something, my accountant fiance is extremely happy about.

Love it.
My love and I just ordered our cake on Saturday. From everyone he knows he wants to keep it a secret because it is the one thing we did so easily together and I am so excited about it. Giddy really.
But I will share hear. It is a three teired topsy turvy shaped (think mad hatter) cake in ivory with natural looking branches and dark purple flowers. The flavor is white almond with real blueberries (like a muffin).
Cost was 3.50 a person.

cakes are definitely more $$$ than you expect them to be, but from a baker’s point of view it’s totally understandable, so i think the splurge it worth it!

What are we NOT splurging on?! LOL. Ours is going to be $6/slice…more that I’d like, but it’s the best darn cake I’ve ever tasted!

The tropical carrot cake sounds absolutely divine and with cream cheese filling. The silver stand sounds like a beautiful addition to the beautiful cake. Definitely worth the splurge.

Ok so I’ve got to brag about my cake! Because I’m getting married in my super tiny home town my cake is extremely affordable and we aren’t skimping on taste (I had 3 slices of this baker’s cake at a wedding last year…whoops!:). I don’t know what the cost per slice is but for a cake to serve 100 people and 300 cream cheese mints cost a little under $200. If I would’ve gotten married in the city I live in now it would’ve been around $500-$600 for all of that!

My slurge is the honeymoon, even though it’s not really apart of the wedding!

We originally planned to splurge on our photography, but ended up finding a fabulous photographer outside of our city that gave us everything we wanted (including photo rights, a free gorgeous guest book made of our engagement photos and an engagement session included) for less than what any other photographer in town charged for their minimum package without photo rights.

Now, we really don’t have anything else to splurge on (a cake decorator friend is doing out cake), we are just redistributing our money to enhance things like the centerpieces.

Yum! Now I’m going to need to go and find some cake to eat… I like the idea of the different layers though, and tropical carrot cake sounds lush!

Can I have a bite of the white cream cake?? Looks delicious and I’m certainly looking forward to our wedding cake as well. We splurged on photography and only went over budget on the cake by $200!

The cake is worth it! What a treat! We are splurging on the top shelf, 5 hour open bar…it’s silly but I want people to have an amazing time and I know our family and friends enjoy their booze! :-)

Videography was what we splurged on. And our reception venue.
