I love to dance regardless of who is watching, and enjoy a good laugh with my girls. I have a soft spot in my heart for planet Earth, my two dogs and my fiance. Fall is my favorite season (which is why we are marrying in September), but I love a warm summer day and the Colorado mountains in the winter. We are planning a modern soiree downtown, with lots of bold colors, and fun, eco-friendly elements.

Who Doesn’t Love Cake?

April 28th, 2010 @ 1:00 pm by Mrs. Argyle

Well, not everyone does. But I do.

Mr. A and I waited FOREVER to pick a cake vendor. With an 18 month engagement, why rush into picking your cake? Besides, what bakery was going to take your deposit that early in advance? None of them. During the last year, I spent my time trying to decide what cake shop(s) to visit. You see, I happen to be in an odd predicament. I went to high school with the daughters of one local cake shop, worked for several years with the daughter of another local cake shop owner, AND did gymnastics with the daughter of the owner of another cake shop. How is a girl to choose when all of your options are delicious? Not to mention that St. Louis has a plethora of delicious cake shops. It all definitely did not make the decision easy.

So, back in March, during our marathon wedding weekend (i.e. “meeting” my gown, registering, mailing save the dates and cake tasting), I had made an appointment for us to visit Whipt Cream.

We tasted four different cakes: Classic Vanilla, Spice Cake, Caramel Pecan and Red Velvet

The cake was light, fluffy and moist. And, the icing? ZOMG the icing. I’m not the biggest buttercream fan, so I was BEYOND stoked when I found out the icing is a mixture of traditional buttercream and whipped cream icing. Just the perfect amount of sweetness and fluffiness.

So, what will our cake look/taste like? We will have a different flavor on each layer (4 layers total), using each of the cake flavors we sampled. The cake will be white with red accents, which will be modeled after the design on our invitations. Since we plan on using a colored linen for the cake table, we felt it would be best to go with a white cake (and to do a “reverse” of our invite colors). And, we will not be freezing our top layer (the reason for 4 layers instead of 5). I’d rather have a fresh cake made for our anniversary!

And, since we didn’t finish our samples we got to take them home. Score!

Did you pick the first bakery you tasted for your wedding cake? Or did you shop around?

We picked the second bakery that we tried. There are really only 2 bakeries in my town. The first one is the popular one, but we thought their cakes were dry and overpriced. The second bakery is in the grocery store. They gave us whole cakes to bring home to sample. 6 whole cakes! We had our friends over to play poker and help us eat cake!

Yum! Cake! :) And I like your idea of reversing the colors from the invitations for your cake, too.

Cute name! A BM is a pastry chef, so she’s stepped up to the plate for us!

we picked the bakery that was included with our reception venue; though frankly the service was crap. The cake we chose was the only edible one (marble w/ buttercream, and apricot jam and bavarian creme- and we had to practically beg to taste something other than strawberry or raspberry). I am obsessed with red velvet lately, but red is nowhere near our colors (lilac, black and ivory), and they didn’t make it. So I’ve been eating red velvet cupcakes everywhere I can find them! SO flavor jealous of your cake, though I love the design we have for ours, and I’m happy with the flavors we chose. :-) Best wishes!
