A Total Bomb of a Hair Trial

April 29th, 2010 @ 10:14 am by Mrs. Octopus

I walked into my hair trial appointment in Pittsburgh with the following things:

These inspiration pictures…

A Total Bomb of a Hair Trial : wedding hair pittsburgh trial Hair501

A Total Bomb of a Hair Trial : wedding hair pittsburgh trial Hair4

A Total Bomb of a Hair Trial : wedding hair pittsburgh trial Hair301

(All from here)

This unwashed hair (thanks to Miss Nachos’ insistence!)…

A Total Bomb of a Hair Trial : wedding hair pittsburgh trial P103035

And the information that the salon’s own front desk had given me, which was that bridal updos cost fifty dollars, and bridesmaids somewhat less than that.

I walked out thirty minutes later, with thirty-five fewer dollars in my checking account, with this hair “style”:

A Total Bomb of a Hair Trial : wedding hair pittsburgh trial P103036

The stylist I met told me as soon as I walked in that my hair was too short to style, pinned it into a loose ballerina bun and said there was nothing else she could do to hair as short as mine, took it back down and put it into a ponytail, and charged me over a dollar a minute to do it. And also let me know that bridal updos are actually eighty-five dollars, and bridesmaids are seventy. UGH. Total letdown all around.

It was especially frustrating because, since we are planning from so far out of town, we have to get the “in-person” planning done in massive, short chunks. This hair trial fail fell in the midst of a whirlwind, jam-packed recent trip to Pittsburgh, and as of right now, I don’t think I’ll be able to visit again for at least two more months. It’s really a bummer when vendor consultations I expect to result in a booking actually lead me right back to square one.

Have you had disappointing vendor meetings? Out-of-town brides, do you also get really frustrated by wasting your on-location planning time on dud consultations?

To be honest, I never would have paid for that “service”. If she says she can’t do it, then fine, but she never should have charged you.

Anyone else hate how a lot of the salons have a charge for an updo, and a seperate, higher, charge for bridal hair? Such BS!

Boo on them! That is ridiculous! Time to find a new salon - perhaps someone in the hive can offer you a recommedation!

p.s. I have a giddy smile every time I see your icon - it is my FAVORITE one ever :)

wow! that stylist was really rude and clearly did not want your business. I’ve seen some really classy up-dos done with hair shorter than yours. definite fail on the stylists part.

I’m also planning from out of state, and I totally get what you mean about dud consultations feeling like a total waste of extremely precious time. I have had only 2 trips home so far and will have only 1 more before the actual wedding, so on those trips my minutes are worth gold!

She charged you $35 to put your hair in a ponytail?! I’d be furious! And your hair does NOT look too short to do an updo…This post is exactly why I’m nervous with my out-of-town wedding - I can’ have my hair trial until a week before the big day!

Um, wow. You shouldn’t have paid them anything. And your hair is not to short at all. Seriously, wow. Good luck finding a new salon!!

That is terrible! :( I can’t believe she charged you to put your hair into a ponytail! FWIW, I’m not a hairstylist, but your hair looks plenty long enough to put up the way you want it to. I hope you can do another trial with an actual hairstylist!

Oh, that is so ridiculous! Not worth the $$$.
And I definitely know what you mean about things you expect to work out falling through. It’s so hard when your time is so limited and you’re counting on something to go smoothly. I’m sure you’ll find someone better, though!

Aww man! I’m sorry!
What a disappointing experience. And that’s crazy talk. Your hair is plenty long enough to do something to?!

I agree w/ Mrs. Quiche - start getting some recommendations for new salon.

At least you did the trial and found out ahead of time! Could you imagine foregoing the trial and getting THAT on your wedding day! That’s why they insist on trails for wedding hair. This is a pretty good example of why hah

You need to contact the salon owner and complain. Not right ~ demand a refund. And, your hair is not too short. The stylist was lazy or in a bad mood.

As someone who is a licensed cosmetologist (just don’t really do it anymore), I can tell you your hair IS long enough. Here’s a clue - she put it in a ponytail close to the spot where you want the majority of your hairstyle to be. Plus, she should have taken into consideration that your wedding isn’t for 4+ months and you do have time to grow it a little. However, a good stylist can make it work, I’ve made it work with a lot less or shorter hair. Time to find a new stylist!!!!!

oh my gosh, your hair is NOT too short to put into an updo, not at all. My best friends hair is much shorter than yours and she does beautiful updos on her own all the time.
I would suggest trying to find a different salon. And when making the appointment, just ask how much an updo is, don’t include the wedding word - it might lower the price. In my area, hairdos are about $45-$50

My hair was the same length as yours at my wedding and the stylist had no problem putting it up.
I’m sorry you had such a bad experience. :(

She should have known from the minute you walked in whether or not your hair was long enough for an up-do. Instead it took her all that time just to tell you that and then charge you?!!! If nothing else, you need to right an honest review of this place on yelp.com so other brides won’t fall into that trap. On another note, your hair is NOT too short for an updo! Mine was way shorter than that when I had it done for prom years ago, and mine turned out great! No worries, you will find a stylist who will do a fantastic job!

That’s horrible, I’m sorry you had such a horrible experience. If you paid with a credit card, I would seriously file a complaint, you may not get your charge reversed, but it’s a mark against them on their record. Sorry again, what a bummer!

I think in this instance you might want to call the salon and speak to the manager and request a refund. If the stylist was not talented enough to work with your hair (which is not too short for an updo), she never should have charged you. It’s frustrating how few people are really committed to customer service anymore. Sorry Miss O!

I’m sorry, but that is total crap what she did! Your hair is not too short and there are such things as extensions–if that was a possibility you wanted to use–then she should know to use that! Do you plan to contact the salon and ask about your money and why you were taken? That woman shouldn’t be a hairstylist :(

That was incredibly rude of her! You totally have long enough hair- maybe not as poufed out as your inspiration yet, but to charge you for that was incredible!

Boo! Hiss! I’d totally call the manager and ask for a refund.

My hair was about the same length as yours. My stylist clipped in extensions for the day of to give my hair more volume for a bun. Maybe that’s an idea to take with you for your next trial?
