About Mrs. Dolphin

I’m a Two-Shoe Bride

April 29th, 2010 @ 4:11 pm by Mrs. Dolphin

Let me set the scene. I took the long drive (okay… maybe it was only 40 minutes… but that is long for me!) down to Ocala to Alterations Unlimited, and ultimately to finally try on my dress for the first time in months (I brought along my brand new and adorable Nina Electras). I got there, slipped into my huge dress (that is another whole story) and slipped into my satin Ninas. As Debbie, the wonderful owner, went over with me my options with the dress and what undergarments I should purchase for our next meeting, all I could do was stare at my feet. How could I have been so absent-minded to not even try on my beautiful new shoes with my wedding dress (which Mr. Dolphin asked me about over and over again once I came home and told him the story)? All I could see is how blatantly the shoes didn’t match my dress—not in style, material or color!

My dress is very light, airy, lacy and is devoid of any satin whatsoever. So when I put on my beautiful satin, ivory, and bowed shoes with it, they just didn’t match. The shoes were meant for a more modern dress, and my dress has more of a vintage look to it. I think it was ultimately the big satin bow that threw off the whole look.

I’m normally very good about these things.

I think about every decision I make extensively… I probably think about my decisions too much. At this point, usually Mr. Dolphin would come in and say ’yay’ or ’nay’ to the shoes and call it a day (relinquishing any worry I had about them not matching my dress). But, alas, we are trying to keep some part of our wedding traditional, and Mr. Dolphin hasn’t seen my dress.

I spent the 40 minute drive home from Ocala fretting about my shoes and what to do (I know… with so much going on in the world today and I’m worrying about a stupid pair of shoes). Then I had a sort of Wedding Shoe revelation. Not only was the bow on the Ninas a problem but so was the fabric: satin. I needed a shoe that was metallic, either silver or gold, to match my dress.

When I got home, I immediately got on the internet and searched high and low for Real Wedding pictures of brides in my dress (I only found about two weddings), looking strategically at their shoes to determine if my revelation was correct… and voila… it was.

With the OK from Mr. Dolphin, I searched the internet for little metallic heels with a vintage flair (and with the same heel height as my previous Ninas) and came across these on eBay (one of my favorite shopping destinations):

These are some J Crew Beauties from a season or two ago. They are pink metallic (which will match my hair accessories) with a Pave Crystal Jewel. They were for sale for about 1/3 their original price on eBay. Gotta love eBay!

I thought about these beauties for awhile (okay, maybe for all about 1/2 a day) and sent them over to Mr. Dolphin (who wasn’t very helpful, other then saying, “Get what makes you happy.” Ahh what a guy!). I ordered these beauties and waited patiently for them to arrive on our doorstep. I have to say, ordering them immediately calmed me down. I got really excited to get these little shoes in the mail, and to try them on with my dress (at my next alterations appointment, where I will arrive shoes, veil, and undergarments in hand, to see the complete look).

They have the perfect amount of vintage-y goodness to complete my look! Once again, Dolphin Kitty gave the shoes the once-over.
(please ignore my feet… I’m sooo not a feet person, so posting this picture of my own was hard!)

I plan to keep the Nina Electra’s until after the wedding and sell them (thank goodness I didn’t pay full price for them!). I’m a good little eBay seller, so I’m confident I can get just about the same price I paid for the Ninas.

I did feel like a crazy woman, driving home and immediately ordering a different pair of shoes for my wedding dress. But, I know that these are the ones for sure. And if not, well, I’m going to wear them anyways!

I have been joking to Mr. Dolphin that they are a little more uncomfortable then my Ninas, and as a result, I’m making him carry me everywhere at our wedding. He usually responds that he’d better start lifting weights more often. I’ve worn more uncomfortable shoes then these before, and for many hours, and been fine (I guess that is what dancing in pointe shoes for years will do for you). So, I’m not worried at all. Hey, beauty is pain, right? Haha.

Did you fall in love with shoes or accessories, only to realize that they don’t match your dress at all?

I went to the store and tried my shoes on with the sample dress. I secretly think I just needed an excuse to see my dress again :) hehe. Come to find out, I am not sure that my shoes are “the ones.” I opted for red shoes. But I think the shoes that I bought may be a little tooooo red and not deep red enough. boo. My original inspiration was the Stuart Weitzman Ruby Pomposo, which lucky for me is not made or sold anywhere anymore. double boo. I’ll just keep scouring ebay, etc. Alternately, I think that the shoes I have are ‘good enough.’ No worries :)

The shoes are very cute, but they look like they are pinching your toes, please don’t wear uncomfortable shoes ,you dont want to be in pain on your wedding day. Maybe it was just the angle of the pic that made the shoes look small.

Those are pretty darn cute! I can totally understand how they wouldn’t match the dress. I specifically sought out Ninas because they are so darn comfy.

Everything I’ve got kinda matches, but I’m sure colors are off. I’m trying not to freak over it.

My shoes are Ninas, too, by the way! Love their selection.

oh yay for finding fantastic replacements. it’s a bummer that your original shoes didn’t go with the dress but points for such an easy second shoe find!

I am a 2 shoe bride… but I am wearing both pair. 1st pair is a great pair of red glittery mary janes (Cue Dorothy and Toto from the Wizard of Oz) and I have a pair of custom made red and white converse.

My girls swore they were going to wear lime green and hot pink shoes with their Cherry red dresses, so when I found Lime green and hot pink converse I had to get them for my girls. Well, I could not let them have the comfort and joy in Converse shoes the day of and me still running around looking like Dorothy, so the 2nd pair was created on Converse.com and ordered immediately.

I ordered the same exact nina shoes in china blue b/c the reviews said the color was a lighter blue than the photo online. I could NOT wait to get them….when I took them in to try on with my dress, they just did not look good. My dress is also vintage-y and the bow was just too bulky for the dress :o( I went to DSW and got a different pair, but I still don’t feel like they are really the ones :o( I am very frustrated.

@Miss Trail Mix: Awee thanks! I heart them MAJOR!

@nona49: Feels like we had the EXACT same situation. Glad I’m not the only one. Bows do not go with vintage-y goodness!

@kayakgirl73: Beauty is pain girlfriend. But these shoes actually feel great. I’ve added my own little ‘comfy’ tools to them to make them extra good. Plus, I was a ballet dancer growing up, and any shoe is more comfortable than pointe shoes, so I rarely find shoes uncomfortable.

Does this mean your Nina Electras are up for sale? Because I’d totally buy them from you. :D PM me?
